Fudzilla Tests 'Hybrid CrossFire', Gets Powerful Results
The current drivers available from ATI (Catalyst 8.1) support an interesting new mode: interoperability between an HD3870 and an HD3850 in CrossFire mode. Fudzilla had both the time and resources to test this out, so they did. Before the test results are considered, please remember that these are just initial drivers. Both Catalyst 8.2 and 8.3 will offer more impressive CrossFire results. To make a long story short, and to sum up a lot of bar charts, AMD is well on their way to making Hybrid CrossFire a feasible solution for a lot of people, especially once more graphics cards can be mixed-and-matched. Please check out Fudzilla for all the benchmarks.
The most notable increase was 50% in Half Life 2. NVIDIA does not have anything comparable to Hybrid CrossFire.

It would be very nice for me if the 2900 XT could work with the 3870x2.. I am about to buy a 3870x2 and can't sell the 2900 for much, maybe I should just hold on to it and see if i could hybrid crossfire them ;)

Yeah... Generally I don't trust FUDzilla, but at least they provided some pictures this time around.
Cool if this is correct.

To be honest, I'd prefer that they work on a way to make Crossfire run with two identical cards and perform on both the primary and secondary connection. That is, I run both my monitors off one pair of cards, instead of two, and get the increased performance on two screens.

i thought hybrid xfire was going to work on the 3xxx and above only. has amd released any info contrary to this?

This maybe isn't fake, but very wrong results. I tested hybrid crossfire with HD3870+HD3850 512MB on P35 (16x+4x) and HD3850 added extra ~3k in 3dmark06. That was done on relatively slow 3.6Ghz wolfdale. There is no chance that Fudzilla results are real.

I have a 3870 oc and 3850 in crossfire and the weird thing is, I can't use the 8.1 drivers!
This setup is working with catalyst 7.12
Cards default,

1) 3dmark
2) (16x+4x)?

That is wierd. I think even a wolfdale at 3.6 would be quicker than whatever they were using which was probably stock (I think they mentioned that), so they are probably very CPU limited. You can see the difference in 03 where CPU becomes less of an issue.

Maybe it's just my memory playing tricks on me, but I remember some
hybrid-SLI experiments with 7600GT and GS and 7300GT. And it worked.
Given that the 7300GT is a cut-down version of the G73 chip of the 7600s,
that might put a different light on it, but it was still interesting.
now they must get 3870 X2 + 3870 +3870 setup with hybrid crossfire :P

The p35 board is why you didn't get good results, the bandwidth of the second lane just isn't enough for xfire to work properly, that's pretty much the only reason why people buy x38 boards (since p35 seem to oc higher and have less problems from what I've seen)

This was a concept way back with the X1k series. Originally it was set so one card could render 3/4 of the screen and the other the rest, or whatever ratio you wanted. so you could have like a X1900 with an X1600.

I'll wait until a real source tests hybrid CrossFire..
