"At a conference last week, RIAA president Cary Sherman said he didn't support mandatory filtering by ISPs, but in a video clip posted by Public Knowledge, Sherman offers a far more troubling 'solution': installing filters on users' PCs. From Ars Technica's coverage: 'The issue of encryption "would have to be faced," Sherman admitted after talking about the wonders of filtering. "One could have a filter on the end user's computer that would actually eliminate any benefit from encryption because if you want to hear [the music], you would need to decrypt it, and at that point the filter would work."'"

Good one, Cary. Your hypocritical Fascist tendencies amuse me. Now go back and complete college, and this time try to stay awake in class.

Guaranteed word-around within one week/month upon release of this "filter"; There are a lot of really determined people out there :yepp:

It would fail miserably anyway as it would be hacked in days and the fact this is impossible to enforce anyway just makes it laughable.

ahahahaha.

Sure OEMs might give in for some weird reason, but us custom builders would be fine

Why don't they just accept the fact that RIAA will die a miserable death as will optical media and Brick and Mortar sales. They are getting more ridiculous by the day especially in places like Europe where legal bodies even consider them to be pityful.

Oh well I am really enjoying this.

I'm not exactly following every move they do (d'oh!), but it seems like these guys are getting more and more desperate. Schadenfreude FTW.

Wait... am I getting this right or ar they trying to enforce a filter that would eliminate decryption of files (say... mp3s) so you can't actually hear the music?
Because if I understood correctly... that just spells CAPITAL EPIC FAIL in so many ways:
1) If WGA can be circumvented this would be a joke to a serious hacker.
2) If you've bought some mp3s from say... iTunes... you can't friggin play them?

I say... bring your filters! Try to forcefully install them on our computers! Get sued from end-users and companies (like say... Apple) alike! And then... when all the sueing took all your funding and credibility.... DIE and let us be! You can't control the internet unless you pull the plug completely. Get it through your thick skulls!

I oh so love it when people with no apparent knowledge of computers make statements like that.
this is almost (almost), as funny a statement as Ted Stevens "A series of tubes" speech. Do your homework, plzkthnx.

If you throw a "filter" on a computer that decrypts and encrypts files on the go, just using the computer is going to slow things down a whole damn lot.
I don't know, you can't really (by law) enforce users to install certain software on a machine, at least not yet (which would be beyond ridiculous), so I can't see how many end users would actually install such a filter voluntarily.
