Hiper Type-R 580 ok?

would it be enough to run an e8400, 4gb ram, 2hdd's and a single decent gfx card ? it's a few years old if that makes any difference ???

I would say not

I have a E6300 @ 2.6
4 sticks of RAM
2 HDDs
3870 XT
and a sound card.

all powered by a Hiper Type-R 580W - 1 year old
I get power downs when the system goes under heavy load.

I had the Type R 580 before I got my G80 8800GTS. Once I installed my GTS and ran a 3D app my pc shut down, not enough power. This was when I had one HDD and my CPU was on stock volts. The 12v rails on that power supply is real weak. If you want a good power supply I can vouch for the Corsair HX620.

Even if it does, its not the greatest PSU, you would be much better off with a HX-520 or similar.

Try your Hiper first though IMO.
