View Full Version : Prometeia Problem

After a sensor failure my prom was RMA'd (and it took a LONG time to get it back) and returned today. Plug the unit in to the wall and a test power supply fire it up and I hear WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH and the fan spin up but even after 5 minutes my prom will not cool at all the temp just holds steady. So my guess is the whoosh sound is the problem or related to it.

Anyone have any ideas? It took chip-con 4+ months to get my last problem fixed and I'm not looking forward to another 4 months of waiting.

Gleep, you might need to let it set overnight in an upright position. I've heard that after shipment the units sometimes need to settle.

What does the temp "hold steady" at?
That really sucks after waiting so long to get it back:mad:
Is it the mach1? Can you think of any more info to add?

It's a mach I, and the temp holds steady at 15c. After 15 minutes of being turned off it will make the same whoosh sound once powered up, the sound lasts about 5 seconds.

Gleep sometimes during shipment if it gets laid on its side the oil and coolant will get in the return hose. PM Bowman and see what he says you should do.

Sounds like one for Bowman or Gary....hang in there!
If it's from shipping, it should sort itself out after a while.

Had exactly the same with one unit. In my case, it was a leak at the condensor. (kind of a PSSHHHH sound which starts quite loud and then dies away) Its usually quite easy to fix since its not a problem with the flexible hose. Any fridge repair shop could probably take care of it quite easily, but i'd also recommend sending it to bowman, maybe he can put some refridgerant with more punch in it too ;)

I'd send it to Chip-Con - can't be true that one has to pay for the fix when it just got repaired

well i just got on this morning and have pm'd you bud.
as the probelm is not to good.
always contact chip-con and report the problem in shipping i am sure this is what happend.
if you didnt twist the head too much and just took it out of the box and fired it up,i am sure it proberly is leaking at the line going to the condensor from the compressor.

you see what happens sometimes is the unit was dropped on its face in shipping, the weight of the compressor(which is mounted on rubber feet)moves foward from the drop.this pushes the top copper tube forward which cannot flex at the condensor, then it breaks right there...you end up with a leak...

i have had this same problem.i will post a pic in a second from my hard drive i have on this excate problem

I removed the side panel and looked, that seems to be the spot that broke as I found a little liquid there.

OMG Gleep your having a rough time man ! Sorry that its working out this way for you ! :(

I would think an AC repair shop should be able to fix it and refil, maybe even with r404a if you didn't want to ship it back and wait another 4 months.

I hope it works out for you in the end !;)

Edit: what am I saying, AC repair shop ?? Send it to Bowman and let him do some magic !!!!!!

stange how i know these thing's....LOL:)

sorry man that is a bad spot.replacement of the entire condensor sometimes is the only hope you have.that is a impossable spot to fix since you have to completty debrase the condensor to fix it right, and then it can be a night mare fixing the leaks.

i did fix the one i posted thou...:D

i will look for the pic showing the fix later...

well this is the only way to fix it simplly.i just removed the top tube from being used in the condensor.i connected a new tube to the otherside and connected it there.then ran it back up over the fan so it does help cool still just not as effecient.it does work fine and cools like it should

So chip-con never responded to my email. So today I took the unit to a local shop and got it fixed and recharged. Now everything is crusing along just fine. Prom is displaying -33 after a few minutes of prime95.

What should the pressure when the unit is running with no load? The tech that repaired it was seeing vacum, but then again this is the smallest a/c unit he's ever repaired (he normally fixes dairy coolers for farmers and such).

well glad you got it fixed..
the low side will run in about a -15hg of vacuum with r134a.

was he able to get to the leak and then just brase it up ?or did he have to replace the tube.?

He wasn't able to repair the leak, so we used a variation of your trick and attached it to the point indicated below. Thanks for your help you're the man. :worship:
