View Full Version : Did I damage my HD3870 by trying to OC it?

The temp of my 3870 cooled by a Thermalright HR always stayed below 45 even under full load.
So, I was playing around with Atitool and clicked "find max core." The number went up & up... 840, 850, 860 (the temp was 50C)...then, BOOM, the monitor suddenly lost video signal.
I rebooted...no video signal. I panicked and rebooted again...still no video signal. A couple minutes later, I rebooted and everything looks fine in 2D. I haven't run any 3D apps because of fear.
Does the GPU have an auto shutoff capability to self-protect? I do really hope so (sigh~~).

yes it will shut off before heat damages it and u cant realy break it unless u get a power surge from the psu or volt mod it (unless u used conductive TIM and it leaked to the pcb next to the die)

when u go back to useing it find an ulocked bios or the sapphire fixed bios and dont go over 877 core and 1377mem acctual clock so 880/1380 is what u would set in CCC, oly use tray tools for fan control
i use this bios

Slightly offtopic, but Im looking for info on my HIS 3870.
What BIOS version exhibits the 862mhz core clock limit and the fan speed limit also? Sure mine is 010.075 at the minute. The 2 on mvktech are 010.067 and 010.071. Is mine newer slash fixed? I cant raise fan speed higher than 77% at the minute. Managed to clock core at 860 but I believe it was slightly unstable (need vmod I think).
Havent actually seen anyone with my card either :/

don't make a sad face about that. i have a pair of reference HIS cards. the only reason i don't have IceQ's is because i bought mine on Nov. 15th and didn't feel like waiting for aftermarket designs to come out. IceQ's kick ass.

Ah instilled some confidence now. I have managed to bench these at 860/1300 but wasnt gaming stable (system went rather mental I might add).
Need to see if my BIOS is the locked/dodgy fan one and amend accordingly!

Does the 3xx0 series still have GPU recovery feature?
