This has been talked about in great detail. the first drivers to bring x-fire (more than 2 gpu's). will not be ready for at least 2 months. most people say cat 8.4 will be the first.

Sorry if this is a dumb staterment but i thought that was for the 2+ card drivers, and this is just 2 cards in crossfire?

each card has two GPU's so it would be treated as Quad CrossFire. you need regular CrossFire drivers to run a single 3870 X2.

Are you sure? from what I've read the OS see's the X2 as a single GPU. and that ALL crossfire work is done on the card.

Hence why you don't need a board with x-fire support to use the x2.

No, OS see it as two GPUs. You can even disable crossfire mode if you want to. (for example something dont work properly in crossfire mode)

Read the reviews. Card is realised as a single gpu. As for drivers give it a month. Your talking about a week old video card. Best of luck. As i am also investing in 2x 3870X2's. Let the games begin between ATI and Nvidia. We customers can only win.

Card is only recognized as a single GPU when in Crossfire mode. If it wasn't this way, Crossfire would not work(and doesn't work, in numerous apps, because it is NOT recognized as one card). ATI driver in XP only allows setting changes on one gpu, irregardless of what gpu's are installed, but this does not mean the OS recognizes the 3870x2 as one card.

I asked over on Hardware Canucks and SKY (reviewer of x2) mentioned he saw two 3870s in device manager at all times, only in CCC did he see only one.

Additionally, I asked him if he could simply shut off Crossfire on the ONE X2 by disabling Catalyst A.I. and he said "I don't think so, as my X2 still benched better than a single 3870, even with Cat A.I. disabled".

I don't think we'll be seeing Crossfire X drivers for another month or two. Originally they were expected in January, but (from what I've heard please correct me) the ATI team spent more time and resources on optimizing the current crop of X2 drivers.

So, if a game does not support Crossfire, the card will be using only one core to play it, right?

Kinda like the 7900/7950GX2, which in non-supportive SLI games only used one card in order to play them.

I am a bit confused with all these reviews and I would really appreciate a clear answer...

Is this card identified by the games as a single card, always working at 100%, both cores, in all games, even if they do not support CF?

Or in non-CF games, it only uses one core?

Either:

or

http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

Personally, I went to ATI's site first - the drivers are all the same.

The latest seems to be Catalyst 8.1...

Thats good question, older beta drivers, there was problem with some games, that got more slow performance then single 3870, but they fixed it.
