View Full Version : Commando owns E8500 Wolfdale -> 5320Mhz! SS 1/4HP

Commando takes on Wolfdale 45nm - E8500 -> 5104Mhz at 1.60v !
Let's see how the old 965P C2 chipset holds up for E8500 Wolfdale :)
Asus Commando takes on 45nm Wolfdale E8500 cpu. I decided to go back to Asus Commando as the motherboard was already prepared and insulated for Kayl Black FrozenSS 1/4HP phase change cooling.
First I installed my E6700 cpu on Asus Commando, so I could flash the bios using biso Ez Flash from 1501 bios to 1605 bios. Then I installed E8500 but system wouldn't boot - stuck on CPU INIT on LCD display. Then I decided to reinstall E6700 cpu, and flash from 1605 bios to 1604 bios, then reinstalled E8500 and now it booted up!
Not sure if it's bioses issues with E8500 but when I play with high FSB, only the first reboot from setting high FSB in bios will load into windows, subsequent bios exits result in system boot hanging with DET DRAM displayed on LCD display ? Never had such an issue with E6600 or E6850 on Asus Commando with 1501 bios. Definitely, bios and/or memory related I think as I got a higher FSB with 5-5-5-x than 4-4-4-x.
Anyway down to fun stuff :D

On water around 535-555FSB for 32M to cpuz validation on Asus Blitz Formula P35 board. On SS is what you see above but could be bios issues holding me back on Asus Commando 965P C2 chipset.

E8500 managed max CPUZ Validation of 5282Mhz at 1.704v idle! Bios set vcore was 1.75v. 1.7625v and above vcore jumps in vcore alot i.e. 1.7625v bios set = 1.808v vcore and scales up from there so dangerous territory for E8500 i suppose ?? :)

BTW, I'm sure you know that, but offset FED1403Fh set to 23 is the most important; and still is on newer chipsets.

This offset is often automatically set to 23 on the latest chipsets. BTW sometimes it doesn't... :shrug: It looks like FSB/dividers related. IIRC, I've tried it with the X38-DS5 and memory read bandwidth was improved by 100MB/s and stability wasn't affected.

Flashed to 1605 bios from 1604 this time it worked. Asus Commando vcore options only allow next vcore option up from 1.75v = 1.704v idle is 1.7625v = 1.808v idle. So this is it 1.808v vcore on E8500 and this E8500 Q740A493T continues to scale with vcore on Kayl Black FrozenSS 1/4HP!

Go 965 :D
So this CPU clocks higher with Commando than with your Blitz Formula? nah Blitz Formula clocks FSB higher than Commando. I only used Commando as I'm too lazy to prepare and insulate a fresh board. Commando was already prepared and insulated from prior phase change sessions way back heh
Considering with only 9.5x multi, cpu will be clocked to high FSB, either P35/X38 or Commando would need 1:1 divider and Commando is no slouch on 1:1 when properly tuned.. only 8-16 seconds slower for super pi 32M on P35/X38 DDR2 boards i guestimate :)
Nice results Eva200, but please do not create 2 threads with same setup, dont make anysense you improve a few Mhz and create a new thread :confused:
I merged the threads for you ;)
no worries :)

Nice E8500 George!
From the retail results here at XS, I think I have to get one too, sooner or later :)
The speed on just single stage is impressive.

thanks.. definitely on fire!
helps to have cooler room ambients at 29C room temps evap was -40C idle, but at 33C room temps evap was hover just over -34C idle !
thanks :D
E8500 530-535FSB 32M on water with 555FSB max cpuz validation on water. On phase with 1604/1605 bios, Commando is weird past 540FSB. It only is stable on first bios save/exit at high FSB could cpuz validate at 570FSB but on subsequent bios exit/saves - it hangs on DET DDRAM :confused:
Ok i see , this 965p is good yet for the 45nm , maybe not the best but good overclocking :)

Yup I'm amazed at what this E8500 is doing on 1/4HP SS!

Tonight room temps were a bit lower at 25C so decided to push this E8500 Q740A493T a bit more to see how it goes at 1.775v bios set vcore which equals 1.824v windows idle and 1.816v windows load :)
Bios temps = -10C
Evap idle = -41C
Evap super pi 32M load = -35C
Speedfan 4.32 CPU Idle = -32C
Room temp = ~25C
System Power Meter load = 290 watts

hehe, that sounds like the correct recipe. i wish i had 900MHz CL6 memory though, i have to puddle through wtih CL7 past 860MHz'ish.
i'm fighting to get sub 9m 30sec with this E8400 on the phase right now with that same recipe just a pinch lower at 530x9 on the P5K3-Dlx, CL7 of course. doesn't look like 9m 30 is going to happen for me tonight though.

P5K3 Deluxe need 0.05v more vcore than Asus Blitz Formula or Commando for oc'ing and prime95 on my E8500 cpus... so maybe P5K3 Deluxe not the best to get max clocks out of for cpu end ?

who knows...it is a monster for SPi at high FSB and i have never had a problem with it at 500FSB+. the maximus extreme on the other hand...is quite the handful north of 500, and doesn't really out perform the P5K3 in SPi from what i have tested. plus the maximus extreme is busy working. plenty of memory to get through this weekend and then it has a stack of GPUs waiting to get their turn ;)

nice resaults guys i'm happy commando can handle 45nm. How you manage to flash a backward bios? because i tryed too from award flash and afudos, and they didn't let me do it. They post a message when they read the bios version that is older than the one i use and the operasion stops. :confused:
