I as well have been waiting on the e8500 for my new build. I imagine that it will provide a little more overclocking headroom over the e8400 (duh), but I may have to give in and just buy the 8400 because I'm anxious to build my gaming machine. I bet if I buy the 8400, the 8500 will be released the very next day. Anyway, does anyone have any info on a US release date? Thanks!

No release date but just last week the microcenter down the road from me had E8400 for only 140 out the door. No rebate :banana::banana::banana: or anything else to deal with. I think they only lasted about 72hrs and from what the sales guy told me they had just over 100 of them.
I am waiting for E8500 as well.
If site at NCIX is correct, E8500 has been delayed until April or later for mass release. There was a question whether a few are going to trickle out before then, like some European stores getting 5 or 10, but even that is questionable in US. And just in case your interested, I contacted several European sites, and none will ship to US.
Tankguys is saying their sources say that Intel is concentrating on E8400 for first quarter, coupled with NCIX comments, I think anyone will be lucky to get an E8500 before April.
NCIX link with ETA april, also scroll down to forum link and read.

$140?!?! They were $189 in my "local" MicroCenter (and still were as of yesterday). Did you buy one at that price?

No availability in North America, yet there are several posts from members in Europe and Asia with E8500's.
Never could figure out how Intel bins these chips, but at least there is a good supply of 8400's:cool:

I read that E8400 is not that good of overclocker won't past 4.3 in most cases
Maybe it's just me but I cannot see paying another $100 for just 1/2 a step multiplier!
Maybe if it had a multiplier of 10, but I just don't think it's worth it at 9.5.
The 8400 is a WAY better value.
Just my 2 cents worth.
