In a notebook, does anyone know the comparison of power consumption between a 5400RPM HDD, DVD-ROW, and SD card in a card reader? I'm curious to know which would be the best for viewing movies while on battery. Let's assume the computer has enough RAM to avoid any swap-file usage while the movie is running. Let's also assume that the video is of a quality that is playable directly from any of the above media.

Also, does anyone know the comparison between a 5400RPM HDD vs a 7200RPM HDD for notebooks?

Well, assuming the HDD was able to be shut down, the SD card would use the least amount of power by far. There are no mechanical devices to power, only electronic.

A 7200RPM HDD uses 25-30% more power than a 5400RPM HDD.

Your only issue will be keeping the HDD off - a lot of things can bring it back into action that are out of your control.

Thank you. If you'd like you can check out my notebook build post that I'm about to make... however, I don't suppose I need to give a moderator permission to view posts on this forum.
