View Full Version : Device Manager shows SATA hard drives as "Hard Disk"

I have an Asus P5B with Core duo 6850. In Windows XP, Device Manager shows my 2 SATA hard drives as "Hard Disk" entries instead of listing the hard drive model names. Same thing with my two SATA DVD drives. It just lists them as "CD-Rom Drives".
Any idea why this is? I have another computer with a core duo, 2 SATA hard drives, 2 SATA DVD drives and Device Manager correctly shows them all by their model names. Dunno what's up.

Yes, names show in BIOS but I notice as it's booting up (showing info in black screen before Windows loads), the names are not there (just 2 "Hard Disks" and 2 "CD-Roms" are listed) and they are in my other computer.

AHCI enabled?

Yes AHCI set to enhanced in BIOS. Not using AHCI drivers though (set to run as IDE), just XP. I know that's not it because I have two other computers, both with 2 SATA hard drives and 2 SATA DVD drives, one with AHCI drivers installed, one without, and both show hard drive and DVD drive model names in Device Manager. The 3rd computer is the anomaly.

I have sorta the same problem. I just changed mine from IDE to AHCI in the bios and my OS drive shows as RAID_VOLUME_ONE and my 2nd drive shows normal as a WD500AAKS SATAII. Not sure why. I have selected AHCI in the bios and not RAID for the setting.

I ended up getting both my hard drives and dvdroms to display correctly in Device Manager. I un-installed one at a time the 2 "Primary IDE Channels" and 2 "Secondary IDE Channels" in Device Manager, rebooted each time and each time Windows would display one correctly.
