Hi,

Just wondering if the 256MB version is worth buying over the 512 MB 8800 GT considering that it is some $50-$60 less.

I know the old 640 MB 8800 GTS's weren't worth the money over the 320 MB ones.

Depends on what resolution you play on.

But overall, the 512 is usually worth it

dont buy the 256, the nvidia architecture cant do 256mb is chokes, the 512MB is the only choice

if u need to save money look at the 3870 or 3850 the 3870 is within 5% of the gt 512 refrence oc, and the 3850 256MB destroys the gt 256

512. But for the prices the 512 GTs are still fetching at most places, an 8800GTS 512 could be a better idea; I've seen them going for $299 AR on Newegg.

That is another question I had.

Which one 512 MB 8800 GT or 3870 overclocks better?

Do these 3870s have a lot of Overclocking headroom? Or is the margin of extra overclocking the same or less than the 8800 GT. I am just wondering because I think those 3870 are built on a 55nm process.

the 3870 will oc from 777 to 988 with a pencil mod no mod its 877max for gpu and the memory non modded dose 1377mhz, as for the gt i dont know, but for the performance the 3870 reference has an msrp of $220 so when the 3870x2 is out the price will drop to msrp and that will be a great pick, and at that price they will be the best performance/price and u could go xfire latter on but the NV to do xfire u need an unstable board

For $250, the 512MB GT is the best choice right now. Overclocked, the 3870 comes close to a stock 600MHz GT, but the GT can easily reach 700MHz and beyond.
