Wasn't sure where to put this..Computer won't boot.

Phenom 9600 BE -Processor
4 sticks of Ballistix 1066 (pc8500) DDR2 - Memory
MSI K9A2 Platinum - Mobo
2 3870's (MSI) - Graphics
2 WD Caviars 250 - HDD
PC P@C Silencer Quad 750 Watt -PSU
Antec 900 - case

Put it all together orginally didn't get video (Then I realized that the DVI wasnt fully plugged in (DOH!) Worked.
Booted up was setting up my raid, and next thing you know, I lost video and the computer was still on. Then I tried shutting it off by holding the power switch and it wouldnt shut off so I had to flip the switch on the PSU. Checked connections and the like, nothing at all seemed wrong. So I turned it back on, no video, and couldnt shut it off again, shut off with the PSU switch again.

Any ideas? Been stumped ever since.

Possibly a bad mobo? Processor?

Have u tried taking out 2 of the 4 ram sticks?
THose sticks need 2.2volt right? Maybe the voltage is to low.

and have u tried clearing the cmos?

Seeing it booted up perfectly at first try it most likely isnt the ram but cant hurt to check it. Atleast clear the cmos and start over.

wel its unlikely but not impossible, ive had (stil having) wierder problems with my current DFI.

Could be,
Id just take out everything except the basics. so 1 grafix card 1 stick of ram etc and then try to boot.

If that doesnt work and if u got spare parts around try switching stuff out maybe try the cpu/ram/grafix on another motherboard etc.

Btw do u get any beeping sound or whatever at boot? if yes have u checked em in the manual?
Or any other kind of diagnostic on the board?

I know the above are mostly basics but it isnt unsual to not see the forest cause of all the damn trees.

I've tried the basic boot (except the 4 gigs of ram, lmao), but im in the process of putting it back together (was going to rma the mobo)

No spare parts so I can't swap.

It just seems weird that I can turn the pc on with the power button on the case, but when I goto hold it to shut it off, it won't. Thats why I think its a bad mobo.

Oh, and no sounds nor diagnostics. =\

Yeah, start with a stripped down version first, 2 gigs of ram, one graphics card, etc. Make sure all your power cables are well seated, both the 24 pin and 4 pin 12VDC, I have though I plugged them in all the way but were not well seated in some builds.

Find yourself an old PCI graphics card and try with it.If it fails it may be the too low Vdimm for sticks or the board is gone(this one is known for mosfet failures,someone correct me if i'm wrong on this).

Well, this is sounding like a MB problem -- question, your PSU fans spin up and turn on, and all your case fans come on with a press of the power button? If not, then don't rule out the PSU, you could test it, jumper two pins in the 24 pin connector, take a volt meter to the 12 VDC and check to see if it is hot (I forget the pins to jumper out though :) ).....

Yes, everything comes on and I tested the PSU, have 3 or 4 testers laying around and tried it in a different PC, I've narrowed it to the mobo, so I'm sending it back today, and we'll see what happens next week I suppose.

Hi Grian,
I had the same problem with mine and found out it was the memory.On initial boot the bios only gives my memory 1.8v so i had to put the Geil in to get to bios so i could up the voltage, when that was done i turned it off and put my G-Skill back in and it booted. I haven't overclocked yet because if i get a bad setting and need to clear cmos i have to switch memory again which is a pain.I couldn't find a memory compatability list on MSI website so at the moment i'm looking for new memory that will do 1066 but also boot at 800 with low volts as the bios doesn't seem to like my G-Skill although they're supposed to boot @ 800 5-5-5-18 T2 1.8v JEDEC Standard. MSI really needs to alter the bios to boot with a minimum of 2v so most if not all memories will get you up and running.

Well I RMA'd the board, I guess ill boot up with some old pc2-6400 for a minute and set my bios to 2.2 and then drop the 4 sticks in when i get the board back and get it running.

You had the same problem with the power button not shutting off it off?

Will I be ok running the 4 sticks in 2.2 after i set it in bios after booting with some lower stuff to set it right?

yes i had the same problem with power button.Once you make it into bios set your voltage and then exit, swap ram then back into bios to set ram timings.

Your ram sticks need 2.2V for normal/specified operation?Kinda high especially for Phenom.

Guys: Haemo is right. As we've mentioned, nearly all of us on the MSI RD790 had the problem when:

-CPU set voltages too low: sub 1.2V
-RAM voltage was set too low: 1.8V
-RAM timings too low for the volts
-You chose 1066 mode.

The board looked dead no matter what you did. You needed to only leave in one stick of RAM, vid card, no HD, minimum fans and bootup after clearing CMOS for 15mins and leaving the system off for 8-9 hours. Then it would boot, you could set the right settings in the BIOS and add everything back in and everything would boot perfect. before this, you need to check power lines, specifically the +12V rails (all of them) at bootup to see if they're within ATX spec.

Sadly, I doubt it was the boards problem and I think you're going to have to deal with it again if you get a new board since the first three problems I outlined could also be affecting you as they've affected many.

*Only leave in 1 stick of RAM. Two put stress on the IMC and need higher CPU volts for stability.
*Set timings to 4-4-4-12 tRC 30 tRFC 105ns 2.2V 1:2 divider (800) when you get in.
*Check VCore, it should be above 1.2V, if not manually adjust it up one notch (as a test).

Then when you get into Windows, stress test the hell out of it to find any instability. Stock stability testing is the first thing you should do when you get a system built. ;)
