Here's a case I just completed to house a client's WCing rig. Its made from a 24" (diameter) x 18" (wide) maple shell with chrome spike lugs. It can hold 15 hard drives and with a few more fan holes, could also hold three internal PA120.3 radiators.

To get a sense of just how big this case is, here's a pic with a 1000W power supply and a hard drive installed:

Thats absolutely gorgeous!
Very good job there, must've taken you ages to do.
Thats one very lucky client of yours, if I had the cash to pay of it, I'd order one too :D

Saw these on Tomshardware awhile ago, they are darn expensive. My room mate is a drummer, I keep telling him to get one heheh.
I think MNPCTECH did a video on making on of these on youtube. Looks great :)

I was wondering, with the hard drives sitting in the middle, where does the motherboard go? above them?

Its hard to see, but the motherboard tray is clear acrylic, mounted vertically on the opposite side of the hard drives, like so:

Ah, I see.
I'd personally go for a horizontally mounted tray, seeing that the case is big enough for it.
Is the square piece of metal positioned "above" the tray the tiedown for expansion cards? If yes, how do the cards bolt into it?

Yeah, a trade-off with a horizontal setup would be it would be harder to see the motherboard (without a window on the top). But then again, anything is possible. :)

The cards are held down by the narrower top piece i.e. the tabs on the expansion cards are squeezed/held down between the two pieces of aluminum plate.
Wow,let's rock! :D
Great idea!

I had an opportunity to have one of Spotswoods cases at my house for 10 days.
I met Rich, very decent guy and the quality of his work is pure perfection.
These are hand made one at a time custom units built with love.
No other way to say it. The workmanship is perfect.
I planned to do a review on one but had my CF card die on me and take all the pics I had with it.

That case has Serial No. 1 on it; no build pics yet. Here's a pic of a smaller version though:
