Any change from 8.1 betas?
Sly Fox
01-16-2008, 12:27 PM
The driver packaging version is: "8.451-071220a1-057725C-ATI."
Not sure about differences between this and the beta driver, but if that version is different, I'm sure SOMETHING is changed.

did they add crossfire x support as promised
Sly Fox
01-16-2008, 12:32 PM
People who used the Beta drivers said that it worked, but I only have normal Crossfire so I can't confirm.
About to run Crysis. With 7.12 I got NO improvement in ANY games and applications other than 3dMark06 with Crossfire enabled.
So hopefully this version will fix that.

Wow, this is really really disappointing.
Same exact problems I had with 7.12.
40 FPS in CoD4 where I get 65 with Crossfire disabled.
Same FPS in Crysis with Crossfire disabled and enabled, no change.
40 FPS in UT3 where I get 65 FPS with Crossfire disabled...
And yet 3DMark06 performs on par for Crossfire... 15,800...
I'm really at the end of my rope with this bull, I think I'm just gonna have to sell the cards...

Here with HD3870 crossfire working on both Vista & XP (Cod4 & Crysis) , even with Cat 7.12
however cat 8.1 final (XP) dont have new Crossfire panel in CCC like cat 8.1 beta (vista)

The problem is your mobo. Opt for a diff chipset.

How can you be sure?
That was the first thing I guessed it was, but that doesn't explain why it works just fine in 3dMark06. I've also tried it with the onboard soundcard disabled and the X-Fi removed and uninstalled, to see if it was a sound issue, and that didn't do anything.

News: 3Dm06 went from 17.8k (8.1 betas) to 17.4k (8.1 final)
Source engine games seem to run a tiny bit better. Crossfire works in Crysis & others. CCC has not changed since 8.1 betas.
EDIT:
@ Sly Fox: you have all hotfixes installed?

OK, check this out, like I said, I get a 3dMark06 score that proves that in that regard Crossfire is obviously working. There's no way I could get this score with a single card at stock speeds.
http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6242/futuremarkscorehd1.jpg
And yet, I get 40 FPS in CoD4 with Crossfire on, 60+ with it off.
The ONLY difference other than sound (which I've already ruled out) between 3dMark06 and my other games is that 3dMark06 is on my C: partition, and my other games are either on D: (the same drive as C: though) or G: (my Raptor X).
I'm just really frustrated I guess, I had really high hopes that 8.1 would fix it up and I'd actually get my $500+ worth out of these cards
Unless something... Or someone shows up to solve this, I guess you'll see these cards in the For Sale forum pretty soon. :(

CF in 3dmark is always enable but NOT in games
with cat 7.11 & 7.12 Crossfire always work in 3dmark , but in Games sometimes Disable , like if you run a 3d aplication or exit a game the CF disables in next game you open (3dmark stil work )
with Cat 8.1 it seems that problem is solved , CF no longer disables in games

I guess I'm kinda grasping at straws here, but I'm trying to convince myself that it's a driver issue not hardware. Seeing that 8.1 didn't fix anything for me however, has led to a great deal of doubt on my end...

Is your mobo based on the old Intel P965 chipset or is it based on the new Intel X38 chipset? I see you have a Asus P5KC Mobo but im not sure what chipset it is. If it is Intel P965 then it would make sense why you're having problems. Other then that, I dont know.

Alright I just checked your mobo is P35 based. Here is a review from one of the customers that left based on your mobo. It sure sounds very problematic.
"Cons: I have tried this board with four different kinds of RAM from two different manufacturers. I have tried two different motherboards, power supplies, video cards, processors... you name it. I have been in this business and working with systems for some 15 years and never have I had more issues with a board than I have had with this. I have tried DDR2 AND DDR3. I have purchased RAM from the RAM mfg website listed as viable and tested for the specific board. NO GOOD. Sure, some people have had success (I assume mostly luck) with this, but the simple fact is that the board is flaky at best. Recent BIOS updates have been no help. My recommendation at this point would be to avoid ASUS for a while and stick with a DDR2 only motherboard until ASUS and the rest of the MFGs get the kinks out. Not happy with ASUS at all. Long time customer of their products."

So my guess is your mobo is the culprit.
X series chipsets are very well designed for Xfire. Hence the name
In case you didnt know the mobo you are using doesnt even offer you 8x 8x lanes but it has only one 16x and the black slot is only 4x or 1x mode
"Expansion Slots
PCI Express x16 2 x PCI-E x16 (blue @ x16 mode, black @ x4 or x1 mode)
PCI Express x1 1
PCI Slots 3 "

I definitely knew when I got it that it has a lot of problems with memory.
It's a DDR3/DDR2 combo board so in that regard it's very buggy.
However, with DDR2-800 Ballistix I've had no problems at all regarding CPU/memory stability.
I'm certainly not trying to claim that I know for sure it's not a motherboard issue, but I just find it very odd that it works in 3dMark06 and not in any games I've tried. If it was hardware related, wouldn't you think it would affect EVERYTHING, not just games, while sparing benchmarks?

If you want a great mobo go for the new Foxconn X38. Very good mobo for the price. I will be purchasing it very soon when dual core wolfdales come out. It will retire my DFI 939 expert and dual core opty. I feel sad already. But its bottlenecking my 8800gtx's ....Goodluck.

That is a good question and a very tricky question. I'm not sure but like someone said earlier , syntetic benchmarks are not the same as real world applications and the drivers play a different role to it.
Before retiring the mobo I would try another thing, i see u r using 64 bit vista? So is there any chance u can load up xp if u still have it available?
Try that, if the problem is still there then my guess is the mobo.

For me, its fixed all of the problems were the card was staying in 2D mode when launching a few games. Also, in riva tuner.. it seems that i have a little more control over the fan. Im about to do a 3dmark run and a few crysis benchmarks to see if there is and performance increase/decrease

yep no doubt!!
WIC and UT3 also better performance
btw:
Tests from techPowerUp User using HD2900 + AMD X2 3800
I got a MACHO boost in UT3! After running a few time-demos with both the 7.12 and 8.1 drivers, here are the results:
mapname changelist datestamp avg FPS % over 30 FPS
WAR-Floodgate 206281 2007.01.16-17.08.05 50.32 87.69 (8.1 @ 820/960)
WAR-Floodgate 206281 2007.01.16-16.36.27 32.28 67.30 (7.12 @ 820/960)
mapname changelist datestamp avg FPS % over 30 FPS
WAR-Torlan 206281 2007.01.16-17.05.51 49.23 91.09 (8.1 @ 820/960)
WAR-Torlan 206281 2007.01.16-16.38.45 47.03 87.21 (7.12 @ 820/960)
While I obviously didn't do quite as well in Torlan the 2nd time around, I think that this is more due to the limitations of my cpu and the fact that I ran that test at stock speeds. I got a boost of 14 fps in Floodgate though! :nutkick:
Edit: I updated my benchmarks with overclocked results on 8.1. Wow! This performance boost is simply amazing. Note that these benchmarks were all taken at max details.
Edit2: I got 8870 3dmarks with the 7.12 drivers, now I get 8999 with the 8.1 drivers!
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpost.php?p=614050&postcount=20
i also got better 3dmark06 performance with HD3870 Crossfire + Cat 8.1 than with Cat 7.12 (around + 150 marks)

really...
what good are 2FPS extra in games if u get what looks like a perfect gathering of 50 dead pixels on your screen and wrong color on web browsing that just wont go away.
I have just installed the 8.1 catalyst (not the hotfix version) on XP x64 and I do not get the wrong colors in FF nor am I getting that square.
But I still would like clarification: Which drivers are newer? The official 8.1 or the 8.1 hotfix? There have been reports going either way. Please someone verify this by checking the version numbers listed in CCC, not what windows might tell you.

I went to AMD knowledge base, clicked on HD3850, and there was a link to this hotfix. I guess it is for HD3xx0 series, but they forgot to write it.
And I am not saying it's newer - but it has higher version number.
EDIT: Rofl, VIsta 32 here amd I have a white square

No I actually mean its playable! After the First Alien Encounter with the Frozen ship it all started going down hill and getting laggy and unplayable which ultimately led to Hard Locking when saving game or reaching check points right before and after excavation site and then it would go no further that was the cut off with my game play with patch 1.1 & CAT 7.12:( but now its all good;)

Well hopefully they fixed the stupid Firefox color bug.
So that is what was causing the funny colours! I actually found it a little useful, as it would highlight searched terms but prefer the default settings. I will install these drivers tonight, I wonder if they fixed the Overdrive settings, as 7.12 would take my card's core up to 945Mhz before restarting. It would then crash every time the drivers tried to load when rebooting, necessitating booting in safe mode and reinstalling the drivers.

Bro. Esau,
I see you are using Powercolor 3870s. I only have one but it has that core 860 limit. Do yours and if so, did you flash them? And if so, did that take care of the problem? My friends Sapphire didn't have the problem, yet the Powercolor tech tells me that all the companies get the same bios from ATI.
thanks

Try the 'Sapphire' bios then, see http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=173510 for link.

No luck with these drivers and 2900xt's for me, not sure if its cause I have overclocked or what, but 7.12 made my max oc w/o instability 850 core, now I have no idea.
I am going back to 7.11 so I can get my 950 game stable again.
These ones 3dmark06 is like half the screen is not in sync with the other half. Same with games.

Just a few questions: When you go into GPU-Z, what does it say for crossfire? Does it say "enabled" using 1 GPU, "enabled" using 2 GPUs. I ask cause you and I had the EXACT SAME ISSUES:) Prior to my Asus Maximus X38 motherboard that im using now, I was using my trusty P5K-DLX P35 motherboard with the 16x 4x limitation. When using x-fire on the P35 chipset, GPU-z would report CROSSFIRE as "ENABLED" using "1" GPU . Which if you ask me doesnt sound right:shrug: , how can x-fire be enabled, but use only 1 gpu? My 3dmark scores were only 15xxx and that also couldnt be right. Games plays laggy, and over all, my single 8800GTS 640mb card provided a better and smoother gaming experience. I got so fed up with the crap, that I took a chance and "rolled the dice" with a X38 based chipset motherboard in the hopes that this could fix my issues. I ordered my current motherboard which is a Asus Maximus Formula X38.
After doing a fresh format of XP home 32bit, installing the newest intel INF drivers, latest DX update, and (at that time) the 7.11 driver (7.12 sucked) reboot, enabled x-fire in CCC, reboot again, installed GPUz and BAM!! it now reads "CROSSFIRE ENABLED using "2" GPUs:up: . I said to myself, now this makes sense;) . I overclocked all my cards to 860c/2600mem, then rebooted again.........INstalled 3dmark06 and achieved my score of 20,600k:) Now isnt that better? games played great (UT3, HL2 EP2) and I am really happy with the purchase of the X38. Try it if you can.
How can you be sure?
That was the first thing I guessed it was, but that doesn't explain why it works just fine in 3dMark06. I've also tried it with the onboard soundcard disabled and the X-Fi removed and uninstalled, to see if it was a sound issue, and that didn't do anything.
Quite simple, you have a p35 mobo, the bandwidth of the second pci_e lane is only x4 while the first is x16, that means that you'll get somewhat of a boost, but not near where you could be, and that's why people are getting x38 over p35 even though there are reports about long term stability issues

The firefox colour bug is easy to fix simply goto display properties, appearance, effects, font smoothing select ClearType. Also the small square can be closed by exiting the ati control icon on your task/tool bar.

Anyone having any luck with multiview with crossfire enabled? When I enable CF second monitor still goes blank. I have one monitor on one 3870 and the second monitor on the second 3870. I found previously that this was the best way to control CF and individual overdrive features.
Oh, I have the white box too...?

Don't know mate have not really leaned into them yet:D I have a subtle approach I take it easy on hardware and gradually break it in as not to pop the cherry to soon. I don't start with High Voltage approach or high O.C at first I teach it to be a respectful biatch:D then I throw the hammer down:lol:
CATALYST 7.12 Color Bug in Firefox was only present when utilizing one card , but was not present when both were enabled in CROSSFIRE

Cleartype sucks cuz it makes the fonts bigger.

Same here, I just installed 8.1 and getting 2 MMLoadDrv errors on Vista startup. I'm running Vista 64bit with P5B Deluxe, Q6600 and 3850.

lol did a search for mmloaddrv.exe on google to find out what it is and this thread was the first search result.
Try and see what that exe is.

Is it another bug? doesn't happen every time now. But I've also disabled CCC running in Sys Tray..
Apparently the square in the corner of the desktop is an official Bug according to Ati Knowledge Base..

It's a problem with control center loading. It doesnt decrease performance or anything. You can try to install a newer version of dotnet and install iit again.

Now wassup?!
1. Brought Overdrive clocks down to standard.
2. Undid Rivatuner fan-setting.
3. Uninstalled ATI drivers from Control Panel/software
4. rebooted
5. Installed Cat 8.1. Deselected Earthism, Steam games offer, ATI registration. ONLY drivers and CCC.
During install: error message "Installshield encountered a problem".
I clicked OK. Installation then proceeded anyway.
6. rebooted.
7. Defragmented
8. Opened CCC > Overdrive > Unlock. Put in the overclocks i was used to. But no matter what i change it to, the TEST button stays greyed out.
9. Uninstalled Cat 8.1.
10. This time, used CCleaner to remove remaining crumbs.
11. rebooted
12. Reinstalled Cat 8.1
13. Opened CCC > Overdrive > Unlock. Again no matter what i change the settings to, the TEST button stays greyed out.
I set it to 855/1246, click Apply.
14. For test, launched 3DMark06. D3D:9 Error during startup.
15. Reinstalled DirectX9.0c (Nov 2007)
16. defragmented, rebooted
17. For test, launched 3DMark06. Again D3D:9 Error during startup.
18. Uninstalled Cat 8.1
19. rebooted
20. installed Cat 7.12, no errors, CCC working normally, 3DM06 running like normal, no problem whatsoever.
Wassup???

Well CRYSIS is acting up again! This time much much further into the game at after leaving Alien caverns and descending down the mountain it starts to get funky again and now when in Jet fighter I get the save check point game freeze and save game freeze where you need to shut down via task manager:mad:
LOL....This is utterly ridiculous I guess I have to wait until CATALYST 8.2 and Patch 1.2 to be able to finish the bloody game.

That doesn't matter here. The copies are exactly the same with the exception of the boot block. So the game instalation is the same. The cracks only bypass the DVD check, nothing else. You will get exact same problems that anyone with an illegal copy of the game.
Brother Esau
01-20-2008, 08:06 AM
Where do you get Raid Card from? If it were Raid Card anything (Which its not) then why would these problems not be present during all stages of the game?
Its a driver issue BIOSHOCK jams all the way through on highest setting .....whoops ...RAID CARD........NOT!
cadaveca
01-20-2008, 08:23 AM
But the problem is when saving? Writing data to disk?
Did you properly format your RAID after you built it, or did you do a "quick format"?
And, uh, in case you missed it, I was just tossing that out there...looked at you sig, saw nothing odd but the controller, it got chosen. Hence the dice roll...
:lol2:
Can you not see smilies, or what?:stick:
Brother Esau
01-20-2008, 08:30 AM
Hey, no need to do quick format on these cards as the regular format is just as fast as a quick format its actually blistering
