What happens when you take the powerful Cell microprocessor, the chip that sits at the heart of the PlayStation 3 games console, and put it to use inside a television? Toshiba demonstrated just such a TV at this week's International Consumer Electronics Show and the results are impressive.
Cell is seriously powerful stuff.

I think it would be cool if you could watch multiple TV channels at the same time, but I'm not sure if that's a limitation of current TV's or the signal that the TV's get. It would also be nice for a DVD's screen selection. I guess the real time upscaling would also be very nice, but from the video it's hard to tell how much of an improvement it actually is.

Issue is that while you can upscale to reduce jagged edges and whatnot, you're not actually providing any new information... which is what you get with those HD channels/boxes that cost the fortune you don't want to spend. As a crude example, if a guy with freckles is filmed and broadcasted without being able to see some of those freckles you can upscale all you want - you won't see them. That's the fun of true HD.
As an intermediate step while people convert between SD and HD though, it might not be a bad idea.... it's just not the kind of thing that retains its value over time (as more and more content will come out in HD). It would likely lose it faster.
Still, it is a good advance. Bringing new and innovative features to the TV is something I have been waiting a long time for, I'm curious to see what they'll decide to come out with in the end.

Sure, no need if you want to to be limited to SD interlaced channels, it will still not look that great, since like what was said, you aren't getting any new information, its really not much different then enlarging a photo in photoshop, or making the window bigger in a media player

I am thinking you dont "need" a cell to do this. Other processors would work as well.
True HD and upscale looks very different to me, im not a big fan of upscale though its sorta useful on super old movies.

ffdshow and cheap media PCs have been doing this for awhile. Regardless, kudo's to Toshiba for trying to bring it to the masses.

Funny, "Toshiba won't be putting a PS3 in it's TVs".
Maybe because they have a Blu-ray player in them and they are vested in HD-DVD? Funny that they co-developed the Cell processor though. Seems like a conflict of interests.
Even if HD-DVD fails, Toshiba still wins though. That PS3 has their part of the Cell in it.

I guess they always have second plan if first fails, they are in win-win situation.

Ok?.......maybe it's the res. of the video but i'm sure high-end plasmas can do the same thing.
