Well I just got a TR ultima 90. Seems decent to a degree I'm impressed by how compact it is.

I've lapped it's base, it's optically flat.
my CPUs IHSes have been lapped, both of them and for both performance was not what I was hoping for.

with ambients of under 25C I'm idling at 42C @ 3.2Ghz 1.28V after vdroop. on a B2 c2d e6400. On a Celeron 420 it's idling around 33ish. Loads are around 17C higher than idle, so 59C and 50C respectively.

I added some paper between the mounting bracket an the heatsinks base to assure adequate mounting pressure, temps were the same with and without it or atleast close enough

I'm using a 1200rpm scythe fan.http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/3889/heatsinkoq0.jpg

is there anything I'm missing? I was expecting like 10C lower temps.

EDIT: would I need to remove the cover thingy on the board used to hold the CPU still? could that be impeding contact?

DO NOT REMOVE THE COVER THINGY......

seriously dont. wont your cpu just slide around even slightly and die?

i suggest you use something thicker than paper.

if there's a joann's near you, you can purchase a sheet of 2mm thick foam and cut them to size. i stacked about 4-5 and cut out a hole in all of them for the nub on the cross-brace. after doing this my Ultima-90 couldn't not rotate at all and the cross-brace itself is now curved due to the foam.

both my cpu and Ultima-90 aren't lapped.

my temps on my e2140 @ 3ghz 1.38v - idle 42c load 62c ambient 25c (using coretemp). fan is a low speed 120mm yate loon running @ 950rpm idle, 1300rpm load (motherboard temp controlled).

^ my temps are lower than yours then 3.26Ghz 1.313V a la BIOS and idle is 40 and around 50C load

I figured outa way to have like 5 C off too, heh was a realyl dumb thing, I didn't have the CPU holder in properly so it was at an angle and partially blocking the heatsink

I guess my expectations were too high or something.

e2xxx cpus get hotter than C2Ds so my temps are normal for a e2140 :)

Your intake fan is mounted in the wrong direction, try it the other way. (Fan to the far right of the pic)

that's an exhaust fan.

You're using one of Lian Li's v1x00.. check their site, it's intake(bottom gif) http://www.lian-li.com/product/product06.php?pr_index=2&cl_index=1&sc_index=1&ss_index=2&type=a

Just try it, I have an Ultima 90 as well, albeit in a PC-201, with that fan as intake.. lapped E6600@3,6Ghz 1,34v in bios and I was under 60°C in the summer, which had ambients of at least 25°C.

Ultima90 is good for stock CPU cooling.

No good for OC.

I had a ultima90 on a 3GHz quad, and it would skittle way past 65*C in ordinary weather.

Changed it to a TRUE120 and on a 40*C+ day with 30*C room temp, it was prime95'ing 4 cores at 65*c and under with a 960rpm fan.

I now have 2 1000rpm+ fans on the TRUE.
