"The Big Typhoon 14 benefits from a larger fan, larger sink, and twice the number of heat pipes. The design looks promising, but Thermaltake has not yet announced performance numbers."

The Big Typhoon 14 gets twice the heat pipes and a larger fan

Well its a proven design so we know the performance will be good, rather than mediocre. Cannot help but feel this design had already reached maximum effectiveness in the original Big typhoon though(principle, not lapping and refinement wise), and all the doubling up will be for naught.
Vertical towers have also seemed to hit their wall with the Thermalright and Tuniq 120.

well, you can only go so high before you hit a wall, literally, and i see these new heatsinks going horizontal, and they look really promising. I really like the look of that V10 from uhh..i don't remember, but you could have that puppy in, and then say "Hey Noob! I've got a V10 :banana::banana::banana::banana:!"

dang that is big, looks like it will bring some air flow down to the ram too. Love my original one, though is hard to get your hand down to put power connectors close to it or get the cooler down, this is going to be a hassle for me, guess I'll only get one then.

i'll wait for reviews to see if its any good, but it could turn out as a decent cooler, also it doesnt take up much space until high up, so big heatsinks on ram, nb and mosfets should fit easily.

This is definitely something I'd buy just for the ability to screw around with it. I bet it will be modded a dozen different ways in the first day folks get them... It something half as cool Stevils Evil Typhoon can be made from one, that would be a lot of fun.... I just bought a 120V high speed 120mm fan for playing with too....

Great news from TT, letīs see if this one is at the same level of itīs predecessor.
Iīve got one on an old XP-M 2600+ @2400Mhz (stop laughing of my ancient hardware, please :D ) and one thing is sure,
for Socket A you wont find a better CPU cooler :ROTF:
Iīll give it a try, definitely

Looks like a performer to me, but we'll see. Twice the heatpipes was pretty much necessary, but what really strikes me is that they shrouded the heatsink. With the previous BT, that alone did a decent job at shaving off a few degrees... looks like they saw people doing that and took notice, always a good sign.
The one thing that concerns me is the fan. Not because it isn't interchangeable (though that is annoying), but because it looks as though it has no side walls... which are absolutely *crucial* to good performance (otherwise air flies off the blades to the side, instead of being directed downwards. It could be that instead this cooler sucks air I suppose... it would still have the same issue, but wouldn't suffer quite as much from it.
Considering that, unless this isn't the final revision or a picture with the fan stopped shows me otherwise, I'm going to come out and say that it may very well ruin the performance of this cooler (at least relative to what it could be otherwise).

I used to love my Big Typhoon for the performance/noise and price ratio. Hope this can further improve it, 140mm fan that looks like a typical silent Arctic Cooling fan, more heatpipes and looks-to-be-more shrouded heatsink sounds good.

I wish their hold downs werent such crap though. It took me forever to get the friggin thing seated properly. and then I had to run bailing wire down from the top of the case to hold this thing up which improved temps a couple degrees

Tuniq, Scythe, Ultra 120 all cool very well but it seems we have reached a threshold already and all these new fancy coolers may not help much.
What do you guys think?

Carbon nanotubes is what you're looking for.
I'm a little surprised that no-one has yet. OCZ made their announcement about using them (on the base only, I realize) a fairly long time ago... more than enough time for the other companies to have actually brought a product featuring them to market, if they hadn't already thought of it.
interested in the real performance comparison with the TRUE, altho I am not very optimistic, that it will be better then the TRUE.... but if the performance is not far from the TRUE and the price is good, then it would be very interesting

I'm not laughing, I had similar (2400+ @almost 2400) up till a few months
ago. The upgrade came out much cheaper than I expected, though, and
the improvement over the old cpu was substantial ;)
There are better cpu coolers, though - water :p:

As the name implies, this massive heatsink uses a 140mm cooling fan which should flow more air at a lower noise level. The Big Typhoon 14 uses six copper heatpipes attached to the copper base. Although there were no further detailed specifications available, this heatsink really wasn't as heavy as it looks. As of writing, there is no release date or price to report.

I just came to the stunning realization (after seeing those pics above) that I never want to buy another CPU cooler with a fan ever again. I mean... wtf? it's just too big and ugly. Pretty tough to pimp your rig when it looks like you're storing the bathroom exhaust fan in it. I bet I could hang that thing above the stove and everyone would think it's the range hood.
I just ordered an ultra and I doubt it will look much better. Time to switch permanently to water I think.

You could be right about the lack of walls, its like the Intel heatsink fan for C2D... But surely they would test with and without to see which is better? I mean they have been around long enough now to make some serious products.

I don't know about anyone else, but I usually buy something for how it preforms and then try to make it look a bit better later. Surely people on XS buy for performance before bling? Sure its not pretty, but it might be quite functional.
I am look foward to seeing some solid comparisons to other coolers.

I hear you, but there has to be balance. I think stuff like this is just too much. Maybe fine for benching, but just feeding it cool air from outside a case becomes an actual difficulty. I'm thinking water full time now.

i can afford wcing setup, and i already bought a perfect set ( the one in my sig now ) but i went back to air, why? cause air doesn't need much care like water
and performacen difference between ur clocks on air and ur clocks on water for the cpu doesn't deserve imho the 200~300$ u will pay
those 200~300 can be invested in another system or even a better vga

Remember we have reach our limits on Air Cooling for High performance O/Ced Quads. Considering the amount of heat these Quads put out, a 50$ heatsink does remarkably well. But Almost any of the good 120mm based heatsink like the True 120, Tuniq, Enzo's Ultra-X, TT Big Typhoon can handle 150-160 watt chips if need be. Look at how cool the 45nm Dual Core's run. Most new Machines from the Big OEM's use the cheap Core 2's which are 65 watt parts.
Vapor
01-20-2008, 07:44 PM
At this point we're also starting to reach a limit with power density....200+ watts is possible to dissipate from a Q9 and the total core area is pretty small.
