question, is it bad to put the HDD upside down? I put it upside down to clear wire clutter a bit in my computer case.

Guess it may vary from model to model, but I have run them upside down, practicaly any position you can imagine without problems. Anyone else?
Compaq used to actually put the HDDs upside down in some of the systems they built I do believe. Sideways Im sure is definetly ok because a lot of server cases take the drives on their side.

Pretty much all the modern Lian-Li's have sideways mounts (my PC-6089 does, I think the PC-60 standard series do too). I believe some of the Antec's (like the Sonata) also do.
Back in the day I had a 486 "portable" computer - can't really call it a 'laptop' even, much less a notebook heh - had a vertical HD (ie, standing on its end).
The only issue would be if there is some type of ventilation "blowhole" that my be affected if it is upside down. My IBM drives all have a small hole on the top with an accompanying sticker "DO NOT COVER THIS HOLE". Even if it's upside down, it should be fine... but that's the only thing I can think of that might be an issue.

Check the manufacturer's website and get the mechanical specs. Some Seagates (several years ago) had a caution that the drive could be mounted any way EXCEPT on its end - with the connector side down. Warranty void if mounted that way.
While I doubt that modern drives have that kind of caution, it wouldn't hurt to be sure.

yeah i had a lian-li case that had the harddrives mounted sidways, never had any problems with it. Like other said i would just check your harddrive manufactuers site to be safe...

I've heard your HDD has to be in a straight angle: either flat, or turned 90° (in any direction).
I don't know if it's true or bull

You can have your hard drive placed anyway you... I deal with tons of hard drives day in and out. It's kinda funny some of the places you see them mounted "Yes, this is from major companys".
Also as someone stated before Dell , comp's and gateways use to mount drives like this.

i heard that they have to be flat ( both sides) or 90°, no extreme angles.
I can vouch for this because if you take a hd while its running and try to move it from its possition to some extreme angle, you are gona feel a wierd vibration feel, but once it hits the 90° it stops.

thats if you move it while its running ulfar. Now try that angle from a stoped postion to running it wont do it. Ever see those track balls at big5? You start spinning them then move it around in your had. Same affect

it's a gyroscope affect. try taking any fast spinning disk and rotating it while it's spinning and you'll get the same thing.

Yeap, HDDs are supposed to work at 180° and 90°, no other angles, but I haven't tried for myself.
I always run my HDD falt, either face or bottom up, same thing.
