Despite a Reuters article earlier this week, which indicated that Microsoft would consider Blu-ray for Xbox 360 in the event of a total defeat for HD DVD, Albert Penello, group marketing manager for Xbox, has now refuted the report, telling Gizmodo that the "headline misconstrued the context of what I said."
He stressed that Microsoft is "not thinking about it" and has "no plans" to create anything based on the Blu-ray format. Furthermore, Microsoft remains "totally committed to HD DVD" and the format is only dead "when Toshiba says they're not doing HD DVD anymore."
Some believe that could be in the not too distant future, but Toshiba said it "remains firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer."

Well if they say that, they are gonna start pouring more money into HD-DVD...

But, they also aren't going to put a built in HD-DVD player into the 360. It doesn't seem Microsoft is entrenched enough to be bothered that HD-Dvd is going to lose.

microsoft is not needed for HD-DVD to lose the format war, blu ray already has enough companys backing it. I recently went to best buy to get world in conflict and i was browsing the dvd's, they have an entire aisle of Blu ray discs but only one column of HDDVD.

That makes no sense, they already have a separate HD-DVD player. Why jack up the cost of a x360 just for the sake of having a HD-DVD player? It's no PS3, they actually have games people want to play  :ROTF:. While MS is keeping cost down by not forcing another sku, the competition decided to EOL the 20/60 GB versions (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080110/tc_afp/lifestylejapanelectricalgamecompanysony;_ylt=AhwJq T7aDCZskPdbysIRlbIjtBAF) :shakes:
Oh, one more thing, did we forget that MS and Sony are console competitors? Why would anyone believe/expect MS create a BR player is beyond me.

HD DVD is already defeated ..
when the rest of the world starts buying PS3, the demand of pirated games is gonna increase, and so with the demand of Blu ray discs, industry gonna buy big bulks of it
the only question is when is the end users gonna get PS3, some await its price drop, some await the stable mod chip, either way they're just waiting for the major haul ..
as for HD DVD .. it sounds like the failed zip discs .. which planned to replace floppy, but in the end CD came out .. and trash it's plan

i'll buy the PS3 when good it has good games. and i emphasize the plural of gameS because MGS4 isn't going to bee enough to drop plus 500 bucks. sorry, BR player or not, it's still not a gaming console worth buying yet.

MS cosnidering Blue Ray would be like the pope considering Buddhism...
it wont happen.
if HDDVD would completly fail its more likely that ms comes up with a new format rather than going blue ray.

The good thing about staying on HD-DVD, for them, could be that it's gonna be a less attractive Platform for pirates if HD-DVD will be a rare. That means more games and money from game sales.

Blu Ray had this won along time ago when the PS3 was launched with the Blu Ray built in. As the PS3 becomes more and more popular the need for Blu Ray movies will increase. There is still only a few good games on the PS3 but the same is said for the Xbox 99% of the games on either console are crap just the Xbox has a bigger selection of crap.
HD DVD is a useless format that has 0 benefits over Blu Ray for the consumer which is ultimately what Sony and MS are trying to win over. They have definately lost the format war but MS will still probably try to get a few more sales with some clever marketing.

Blu Ray won because of the PS3's popularity? lawl. Blu Ray won because it had the better backers from the movie/computing industry. The PS3's success was much like that of the Titanic's, only with massive price drops and the advent of HD TV's it *may* end up slowly surfacing in popularity... if they can make more games people like (and they should eventually). Looking at http://www.vgchartz.com/ just hurts... less than 20% of the current console market.
I really just can't think of a way to justify this decision from them. I could see stating that they will stockpile players in case anyone who previously bought one has it break and they still want to use it for their current HD-DVD movies... but to ignore Blu-Ray outright? Oh well, in the end consoles are for playing games with, movies are a bonus.

Not the PS3s popularity as such because it isnt quite as big as the Xbox or Wii so far because of the lack of games. I think its purely down to the fact that at one point or another in the near future most ppl will end up buying a PS3 not just for the games console but because it costs less than a seperate Blu Ray player and does exactely the same thing. There will be alot of better games coming out in the future for the PS3 that should hopefully show just how much more powerful it is than the Xbox 360. So far all weve seen is crappy port jobs that dont show how much more capable it is than the Xbox. The Fact sony have launched this new "Home" online community is also a massive + and should certainly encourage alot more ppl to pick the consoles up when prices drop abit in the next few months as its a great way for family and friends to interact with each other.

From what I've read some PSP are not downgrade-able and requires a modchip to play "back-ups" and homebrews. I image the PS3 will be the same, the older 20 and 60GB model can probably use custom firmware, but the newer 40 and 80GB model will need a modchip.

At least until someone cracks open the Slim PSP & 40GB PS3 firmware. It would be nice to be able to use Backups just in case though.

u need to flash ur battery with an open psp to a jigkit battery and then u can do whatever u want, its just a matter of time until its found out how to get to dev flash mode on the ps3
and the 360 has 10-11GB games that ive seen on some sites so it has to be tipple layer

I just think this guy was yelled at by Microsoft for saying they would give up if they had too when they haven't quite lost the war yet. HD-DVD still has a little bit of a chance and someone like this saying they would kneel if they had too hurts that little chance at succeeding. Thus him pulling back his previous statement.
