Quick and dirty E8400 testing:
The E8400 has been installed in my DFI Blood Iron P35 motherboard, here's a screen shot of the stock settings, with it having defaulted to a 6x multi:
http://www.tankguys.com/images/tests/8400/cpuz1.gif
After doing some tests, here's the best quick and dirty stable OC I could get at "stock" voltages:
http://www.tankguys.com/images/tests/8400/stock_voltage_OC.gif
I couldn't nudge it even a big higher - one bump in FSB resulted in no boot. It wasn't the FSB wall either, as I dropped the multi and could easily push higher FSB. Without having a ton of time to tweak further, that seems to be the best I could get at stock.
Bumping up the voltage just a tad above spec, I was able to get this:
http://www.tankguys.com/images/tests/8400/high_voltage_oc.gif
I didn't try too hard to push it much higher, as time is a bit limited at the moment. All in all, not a bad showing for some quick and simple OC testing.
E8500:
On to to the E8500!
This one was a tad odd - the multi is showing as 6-9, same as the E8400. The 9.5 option is not present. I suspect the board is at fault, but in any case, I upped the FSB to get to 3333mhz for the first screen shoot:
http://www.tankguys.com/images/tests/8400/cpuz2.gif
Next, I pushed the FSB a bit, to see where we'd get:
http://www.tankguys.com/images/tests/8400/stock_voltage_OC-1.gif
Not bad so far, but definitely time to push it further :D
http://www.tankguys.com/images/tests/8400/stock_voltage_OC-2.gif
That's as high as I could seem to get on stock voltage. I'm currently testing again with a slight bump, will post when I have some results!

if my quad does good at 3.85ghz, i shouldnt even bother with a yorkie huh???? Multi would probably hold me back, no?

if your quad is stable at 3.85, not worth to upgrade (only for QX9650)
8.5x multi is REALLY limiting factor

I just preorederd a e8500 from compsource. We'll see if it ever ships. Is Tankguys taking preorders? Looking forward to see your results. :toast:

I wonder if this time will turn out better then the other two pre-orders for 6600's and quads? TG should have it down to a science by now.

says on his page the E8400 will retail for 209.99 on the site, i was under the assumption that the retail price intel set for the E8400 was 183, according to the chart at CES.

it always sells for around that price sometimes even less anyways
i thought i was going to stick with my Q6600 for years and here I am drooling over an upgrade already. the overclocking bug is addicting & infectious :)
if my quad does good at 3.85ghz, i shouldnt even bother with a yorkie huh???? Multi would probably hold me back, no?
did you get 3.8 stable on the 780i?!? or the x38 in your sig?
if your quad is stable at 3.85, not worth to upgrade (only for QX9650)
are you saying that QX9650 would be worth it, but the non-extreme would not?
AriciU
01-09-2008, 10:46 PM
You'd probably reach the same 3.8ghz with the non-Extreme quads because of FSB wall and low multi. Only the qx9650 gets the job done (4.2ghz+) for the quads at the moment IMO.

Yea, I *hate* when those charts get posted :D It's a very common misconception that it's MSRP pricing. It's definitely not.
Those prices are for orders for 1,000 or more chips, directly from Intel, and are for TRAY/OEM chips. So, no heatsink, fan, or 3 year warranty.
SO, if you're buying 1 or 2 RETAIL chips, from a reseller, don't expect that price ;)

yes it's worth if you want 3.9ghz+
you'll be stuck at 460-480fsb...with the low multi, it's around 3.8-3.9

I agree with you.
When they first come out it's gouge time.. within a few weeks they settle around the chart price. I get sick of hearing " that's if you buy 1000". :horse:

they already sell cheaper in Australia but usually only first batch is like that
second batch people increase the price by $50 lol

Doubt it - recently OEM chips have cost MORE than retail chips for me... but if the price is back down, I'll consider it ;)
First post updated with some quick results... didn't have time to be very methodical with them, but fun all the same!
