Didnt feel like working on my P5K Deluxe today so I worked on another project that i've been meaning to get to for a few months...

Still not done yet... may be able to finish tomorrow if I can find all the stuff I need. Fan placement isnt finalized. These heatsinks sure soak up the heat. I had a hard time soldering/unsoldering with a big butane torch...

EDIT

Also if you're looking at these pics and thinking you'll realize a TT-BT would make a great video card heatsink just by changing all the heatpipes onto one side then bending them ;)

Lunchbox - Stock mounting should work for 775 still, which is what i'll be using it for. I'll measure to be sure later. If not i'll just get longer bolts than what it came with.

Vapor - Havent used the one since I got rid of my old Opteron 165 last xmas.. other has been in a box new since then as well lol...

Grips - If I have what I need tomorrow it will look a lot better and should pick up some more performance as well. A stock TT-BT would benefit from what i've got planned.

any tips about how to bend the heatpipes without breaking them ?

they're easy to bend, trust me, but you could use some springs around them for bending. iirc that's how Revv did it; you'd need to detach all the heatpipes from the base.

what about how to remove the pipes from the copper base ? using heat gun ?

STEvil

Heatgun lol....

I used a large butane torch and it was barely enough.

A propane torch might get you farther but I ended up using an Acetylene powered one to resolder properly.

is the heatpipe holder soldered to them also ? i am trying to remove it now with force but i can't

well from the pictures seems that it is indeed soldered

so tomorrow i will try to find a suitable thing to use like the torch you used

is using extra heat to remove the soldering can damage the pipes ???

Why not make both of them so that they stand up, like the VGA idea. Then they would essentially be like other tower coolers like the TRUE. Then you could mount a 120cfm fan to each one and blow through out the rear exhaust. I think it would be more efficient than 2 different direction fans.

STEvil

I thought about it but the real problem is that when your heatsink gets powerful enough you have a hard time producing enough heat without causing electromigration inside the CPU... if you want to keep the CPU for a meaningful amount of time that is ;)

Water has the same problem once you get a good enough setup. Getting the heat from the core to the heatsink/waterblock is also an issue.

What stopped me from doing the mod was that i thought that the tubes would rupture and depressurize, ruining them in the process. So to remedy that i was thinking copper and phosphorous brazing rods would work well, but space is a bit limited at my apt. (another abd excuse on my part.) Does anyone know the adverse health affects associated with phosphorous? What kind of solder did you use?
Aleki- I like how you think!

I seriously doubt you have to worry about not enough heat. It is simply not possible to cool below ambient with just air, so I don't see how it could cause any problems.

STEvil

fragmastermax - Rosen core lead based. Pretty generic stuff found at most electronics repair shops and also available in most anywhere that has plumbing supplies.

Phosphorous will produce a toxic gas which could make you sick. You will also be limited to only brazing two sides as the pipes will likely rupture with the heat required to braze the heatsink internally (where the heatsinks meet).

Power5 - ?

difference between "megaBT"/2x1300rpm/ and zalm9500/max rpm/ is equal only 5*C. But CPU is just A64 3000+ 2500mhz/1.7v.
So it will be interestingly to look results of "SuperBT" by STEvil.

it's a matter of capacity utilization. perhaps with an E6600 you won't really notice a difference. with a screaming quad, however, it will be able to actually utilize the huge bulk of metal; then you'll notice a difference.

Also, awesome project stevil! Looks like a hot setup. I think if i were to do it i would switch the orientation so that the sink that wasn't desoldered/re-soldered. was on the bottom. I always have had the fear that my re-attachment of the pipes wasnt as good as the factory job. Not trying to knock what you did; this is awesome - seeing this and that now i can get big typhoons for $10 might get me back into modding mode. :)

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is I got it mounted last night.

The bad news is the mount was bad and I need to modify the bracket or get longer screws.

So, by mounting using only two of the screws (twisted the bracket pretty good lol) at stock settings I was doing 25c in the bios at idle with 18c ambient. Took the fan off and it idled at 36c after 2 hours...

Tossed 1.6v and 3.1ghz at the cpu, 71c idle!!!!! (1.35v 1.8ghz stock)

All temps read from the bios, i'm not going to bother being accurate with that poor of a mount lol.

Don't you think it could be the fact that you have reattached the IHS to the CPU ? What did you use to make the contact between the cores and the IHS ?

You should try with a CPU having its stock IHS or you won't be able to tell if it is the IHS remount or something else which is wrong.

STEvil
