View Full Version : Is this possible? CM 690 internal radiator mounting question

If I cut out the fan grill than mounts the top two 120mm fans, and bolt them to the mesh of the top of the case, is strong enough to hold the 2x 120mm fans, and a radiator full of water?
So this way, there's enough clearance between the rad and the top of the motherboard.

Yeah, I've seen both them and they look great but the point I'm trying to get across is to cut out the metal grill of the actual case and hang the rad of the mesh so it doesn't bulge out. Both Naekuh's and NickS builds have the mesh on the top bulging out.
I guess its because the clearance between the fan grill and the mesh on top is about 23mm and when you try to stick a 25mm fan in there, the mesh bulges out

Hey, thanks for the email. glad you like my build.
the mesh is really week, i cut mine with shears, i wouldnt mount anything on it.
yea its not exactly 25mm
http://evil98.insanity-asylum.com/computers/workrig/part%204/1.jpg
what im stating here is from the top of the case to the top of the plastic
top is about 25mm, i never intended to hide everything since i had gtx
which is quite thicker and 38mm fans in a push pull. what i did was cut
the top of the case the size of fan, and the rad would rest on top of
the case holding itself in place. the radiator is not fastened to the case
in anyway in my build, its just sits in its slot. if you really want to have
it truly internal you will have to build a braket to lower the whole setup
inside of the case. the 35mm was pertect for my clearance, but i dont
know if your rad+fan will fit with about 50mm of clearance give or take 5mm.
hope that helps. what kinda of rad are you going to use?
give me some specs and ill see what i can do for you.

Talk to NickS, he did it... Here (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2680764&postcount=6420).
Shoot him a pm and he could probably tell you how he did it

I'm going to be using a Swiftech MCR220 which is about 35mm thick from memory, the fans are Coolermaster 120x25mm. It is strange that Naekuh's and NickS' builds, they use 25mm fan but their mesh bulges outwards.
So if the mesh isn't strong enough, I spose the only way would make a bracket to support the radiator underneath.
here's a link to naekuh's build how it the mesh bulges outwards

Looking at the cm 690's top.. i can understand how attractive those two 120mm fan holes are for a dual rad... so keeping in mind that you have only 25+35 = 60mm of clearance heres what you can do..
Use this rad: HW Labs Black Ice Pro II Dual 120mm - Black
(http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/blackiceproii.html)
Use this fan:
Delta FFB1212EH 120x25mm High Speed (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/de12ff1.html)
However, you might be thinking thats not good enough to keep your system cool... but you can mount another dual 120mm rad in this cabinet..
well i'll be getting all my lc components real soon... so when i do put this together... ill make a worklog...
ps: need to know if MCW60 fits on a 8600 GT...????

Instead of the above mentioned fan.. you could use this:
Scythe 120x25mm SlipStream SY1225SL12SL - 24 CFM (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/sc12slsy24cf.html)
these come in the following CFMs: 24 (like above), 40, 68, 88, 110... and they're just 25mm thick... sounds good to me...
hope its the same for you'll

well I was looking for something that wouldn't bulged the mesh out, but it doesn't matter anymore, I've gotten myself a Lian Li PC-S80 :D

perfection.
if i had to redue it do it this way...
Get hard mounts so you can mount the first and last fans internally, LED Yates would work great if you want bling.
Get an EK Res and side mount it next to the motherboard. If the fan is in the middle, the buldge wont be that great as having 3 fans up there, or in mycase 2 :T
Heres a view of how much clearance you need to pull of:
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p73/aigomorla/IMG_0855.jpg
You see how my d-tek mounts is preventing me from mounting the fans internally? You can probably mount the fans on the inside if you used hard mounts. the 25mm fan will bearly not clear the memory section. HWLabs 360GTS should fit with fans internally without problems... but thats if you want to go GTS. :X
I should of used the 360GTS and hard mounted it. :X I had one laying around, but i also "accidentally" well not really.... ordered a MCR320 just incase it would fit.
