What would you using the router for (how many connections, what kind of bandwidth for transfer between clients, how many sources for data etc. would be ideal)?
I have had experience in the WRT54G(S) series and have liked them precisely because they do the job and do not break the bank; but my experience is limited to only two wireless connections and two wired connections in a non-commercial setup. I have not used GL, but the GS is pretty similar. I also like DD-WRT and can give pointers.
I do not know anything about the DGL 4300 but had a good experience with customer service for a wired ADSL router from D-Link a couple of months ago (I was helping a friend). The router you indicated is popular (I asked a bud :) )
I am pretty OK with DD-WRT/Linux/firmware mods, so if you have any questions, I think I could be of help :).

I stayed way from the GS because it only has 2MB of of flash and 16MB of ram. While the GL has 16MB ram and 4mb flash (old GS had 32MB of ram!)
Well we needed to get a router quickly, because our current router started getting really flakey, and we settled on a Linksys WRT150n, it seems to be decent so far.

I bought one of those new from ebay for $29 shipped over a year ago, and not a single problem yet, my entire house (including the opposite corner of our basement-my router's in my room on the 2nd floor) gets at least 54mb/s, most places get close to the advertised 108 as long as you have the proper adapter.
If you don't think that's good enough for you (which honestly I think its worth the value, I live in a 2800 sq. foot house if that means anything), all I can say is wireless N is starting to shape up, and also you should look into powerline adapters, they're faster than N in general according to PCWORLD and cheaper

that's just a random one there, there are plenty of other better ones

I am sure that your choice is more than decent, it just seems that linksys decided that customers need to pay a premium for more flash/hack space! I was just looking at a few $ off!
OK, this is going to sound stupid, but one reason for me liking linksys is that their routers are physically more solid (and their firmware can take a beating too), their plastic routers can take a thumping better than D-Link's tinny boxes and it is easy to revert back to a previous firmware :) .

I have a Linksys WRT54GL that I bought back in April '06 and it's been running strong with DD-WRT. I feel that DD-WRT really gives you a lot of features and settings on these routers, plus the routers themselves are rock stable. I had seen 100+ days up time with no issues.
They are so good I made my girlfriend buy one to replace her Netgear piece of crap that reset every time you tried to download large files over wireless.

I love my D-Link DGL 4300, running almost 4 months not 1 single problem.

My D-Link DI-524 just died and I was looking for something good for gaming to replace it and I ran across a site that suggest that the DI-655 is pretty much the same as the new DGL-4500 but the DI-655 is only $109 bucks on the egg so I went with that.
Here is the link to the page I found the information from.
