This has been a long time comming. Time to jury rig a 120mm (all I had) fan to this sucker.

Before my GPU temps were about 60* idle, which is terrible, I put this down to a couple of things. The shroud wasn't seated down very well, and let air escape all the way around the little fan. The little fan is way to small, and has small fins, it moves no air at all. And the shroud really just keep's the heat in. Now my GPU is around 54* idle whether the original fan is at %99 or %0.

Some pics.

I have the same card. What are your load temps (10 minutes of GpuCapsViewer's FUR test or 15mins of ATI tool's scanning for artifacts) ? I was thinking of getting a TR HR-03 Plus but since i can't find it in stock anywhere in this country i may give your mod a try :)

My idle is also 60C and load (fur test) it goes to around 90C :(

"it goes to around 90C"
Man thats scary. If mine looks like going over 80 it normally locks up under stress tests.

I had to drill a hole in one of the fins in one of the corners to put my wire through to secure it..

I found that it slows down how quickly it heats up, but I havnt run anything yet to see what it does on load. I will get back to you on this.

EDIT: I also want the HR03 or the zalman vf1000 but either way they're expensive, and im not sure if either of them will fit with where my pump sits.

OK So after running 3dmark 06 here are results.

Before test: CPU-42* System-36* GPU-54*
After test: CPU-51* System-38* GPU-69*

It should also be noted that within 5 seconds of the test closing GPU temp was back to 61* and in less than a minute temperature was back to 55*

Score was:
Total- 12369
SM2- 5372
HDR- 5573
CPU-3205

Cpu was @ 3.6ghz and GTX was at stock speeds.

I forgot to ask you. How did you attach the fan to the stock heatsink? I'm quite bored so i think i'll do it myself today :)

like that ;)

good results mate i attached an intel fan to mine in place of the original but am going to add another where yours is for more flow.

imo think you should cut the shroud short and put it back on (the bit around the stock fan) so it creates the vacuum to suck air past the inductors (you can see them under the stock fan) & other parts of the power circuitry.

Done mine too :D I had to use some strings and some elastics in a very ghetto way but it did the job and the fan doesn't move around.

Temps used to be 61C idle, ~95C load (10min FUR test) at stock clocks which gave me artifacts and was awfull.

Temps will never get this high in 3dmark or any game so i'm really happy about it

right so about a 20*C temp drop, nice work. What are your ambients in your room though with -7 outside?

About 22C.

I did'nt think the GT got anywhere near as hot. Like I have mates with these that Idle at 74*.... I try not to let mine get to that after hours on full load.

The only way is maybe run 3d mark and take your temps. Then pull your shroud off and do it again with a big fan, then if its better keep it, if it's not, put your shroud back on.

How come you can keep the original fan connected?

I have a 8800GTS and i removed the cover. But as soon as i booted WITH the stock fan connected, it gave me this loud continious BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEetcp sound. Once disconnected all fine.

Is this different with the GTX then ? :)

I don't quite understand. The plastic shroud is just a peace of plastic that is to channel the air over the fins. Unless you damaged fan taking it off I don't understand how it could be any different. Also I would not pull the shroud off without at least sticking another fan onto the fins of the heat sink, that shroud is what directs the air through the fins, no shroud no air, so it will overheat very quickly unless you put another fan on.

I know, it did for mine anyway ;s, it was also said to disconnect it in this topic that had a small guide on removing it. Was just curious if it was the same.

Anyway, it's getting sufficient cooling by 2 fans. Sitting at 38 Idle and never goes over 55 under load ;).

O thats ok, I did not realise that you had put other fans on it. Those temps are good, I had a 320MB GTS before the GTX, I never changed the cooling on it though, it was no where near as bad as the GTX, but it was never as cool as yours either.

Generally people are finding that getting rid of the shroud and putting another fan on it does help alot. The stock fan is just to weak.

Eventually though I would like to put this on H2o or on a good quality Air cooler.

It dropped my idle temp from around 50 degrees to around 40-ish. Which is amazing, and under load it only goes up by about 12~15.

Well my 8800GT at 65% on the fan 24/7 idles at 48-49 and under load hits about 65C, from what I've heard, that's really good for a GT, but if i could get the results you guys are getting buy taking off the shroud and putting a normal case fan on top, then I would love too.. anyone ever do this?

Well thats pretty good temp's already. Unless you are going to push it really hard (in which case you would probably want liquid anyway) there's little pints of changing. I only changed because of so high temps, and because I was hoping for higher overclock.

But if you do want to make the cooler better, you can easily just take the shroud off, and try with a fan over sink, If it is not better, then it is easy just to put the shroud on. It is very quick and simple. Just be carefull touching the card, and touch case or something to discharge any static electricity you may have before any of the PCB or anything else..

^ that sounds pretty easy, I get I'm gonna try it out with an Antec TriCool or a Scythe Ultra Kaze

Well anyways I needed my big fan else where so I put one of the cheep thermaltake 92mm on there

This time however I set the fan up to suck the air, and I put the shroud back on, except that I cut it short to alow for the 92mm fan to have the whole surface of fines to be sucking over. This means the two fans will be working together.

I havnt got it back in case, so I can't do photos right now to show, hopefully by tomorrow afternoon though I can.

Here is my new cooler, while it is still much better than stock, especially under load, it is not quite as good as the first change, with the 120mm.

Here I have a 92mm thermaltake fan sucking the air out, so the blower fan and the new fan are working together, but it is still not as cool, probably due to the vast size advantage the 120mm had, and also blowing air into the fins is usually better (plus this meant it ejected some of the hot air out the back of the case, now if is all being kept in the case.)

To make it fit I just cut the shroud short and used wire to secure it, had to drill new holes in the heatsink again though.
