View Full Version : 2x 256MB GEIL PC3500 UDC on IC7 ?

Anyone use 2x 256MB GEIL PC3500 Ultra Dual Channel Platinum memory on IC7 ? Can't seem to get it to run at rated speeds on IC7 at 2.8v (2.76-2.78v real) but it runs fine at rated speeds on Albatron PX865PE PRO2 at 2.75v in bios. They're 03Q2 batch = 2nd Quarter 2003 manufactured.

On PX865PE PRO2 1.02 beta bios
@217mhz 2-3-3-6 at 2.75v memtest test#5 error free for 16+ hrs
@220mhz 2-3-3-6 at 2.85v memtest test#5 error free for 18+ hrs

But on IC7 15 bios

@217mhz 2-3-3-6 at 2.8v
1st attempt = 4 errors after 24 passes
2nd attempt = 12 errors after 65 passes
3rd attempt = 10 errors after 38 passes

@217mhz 2.5-3-3-6 at 2.8v = 12 errors after 20 passes

@217mhz 2.5-3-3-7 at 2.8v = 7 errors after 7 passes

@217mhz 2.5-4-3-6 at 2.8v = 8 errors after 7 passes

@217mhz 2.5-4-4-6 at 2.8v = 5 errors after 20 passes

From the above, looks like IC7 isn't handling the Ras to Cas and Ras Precharge values of 3 very well even at 2.8v (2.76-2.78v real) vdimm. While PX865PE PRO2 at 2.75v vdimm is okay. I know from my own experiences GEIL Platinum range need lots of vdimm voltage, but this is strange. Only explanation is PX865PE PRO2 at 2.75v gives a bit more than 2.78v in reality I guess.

Actually, my budget OCZ PC3500 Premier do better than this on IC7 http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17159 !

guess this is false advertsing on GEIL's part, what they have on site for pc3500 ultra dual channel memory is rated timings for single sticks at 2-3-3-6 read http://www.geil.com.tw/w/Qa/viewthread.jsp?mid=288&

The SETTING VALUE in the dual channel is
CAS ......................: 2
RAS Precharge ......: 4
RAS to CAS ...........: 4
Precharge Delay ...: 8
Burst Length .........: 4

you must add +0.2~0.3 vlotage of DIMM.

First I EXPLAIN THE "Precharge Delay ...: 8".
The same module insert in the single channel(ex:845d o845e ...845pe...).It will appear 2 6 3 3.
But in the dual channel will appear 2 4 4 8.


I think that i will describe the related data in the spd.txt of spu-z.
When you press the "about button" in the cpu-z.
You will see a spd.txt.
It is the spd of this memory.
You can look in the 18th item of spd.txt.
It is the "04".The 04 is set cl=2.

But I want to say a little point.(2 8 4 4 TO 2 6 3 3.....)
If you insert one dimm into tntel chipset motherboard.By spd is 2.5 8 4 4 or 2 8 4 4..

AS the "8" parameter,you can refer the 30th item.
If it is set 28,it will 25mhz.
In the ddr400,the parameter about IC=5.0ns.~25MHZ.So cpu(200mhz)/25mhz=8.
But in the old cpu(133mhz or 166mhz),166/25~6.xx 133/25~5.xx
So in the single channel ~6,but in the dual channel ~8.

AS the "6" parameter,you can refer the 30th item.
If it is set "1E",it will 33mhz
In the ddr400,the parameter about IC=5.0ns.~33MHZ.So cpu(200mhz)/33mhz~6.
But you must realize the 2 6 3 3 or 2 6 2 2 is very critical in the dual channel.It put in the single channel maybe look 2 5 3 3 or more critical.

And you must run 3dmark 2001 or 2003 or pcmark or sissoftware or memtest86 etc.

I want to say that the nature of the IC is very important.
Maybe you can buy ddr333,it can set the spd and extreme MHZ TO 200 or above.

Like other cosair ,or ocz.....They will promote 8 in the dual channel.
But some memory can still set 2 6 3 3 by manual.This IC process is very strong.

I want to appear that ddr 433 2 3 3 6 4 is more critical than DDR466 OR DDR500 2.5 4 4 8 4 OR 3 4 4 8 4.


SINGLE AHANNEL 2 6 3 3 TO DUAL CHANNEL 2 8 4 4
DUAL CHANNEL 2 6 3 3 TO SINGLECHANNEL 2 5 3 3 OR MORE CRITICAL than this.
Maybe 2 6 3 3 in the 400 environment is large than 2 8 4 4 ddr433.
This is that you can make a experience in 3dmark.

So you can set 2 4 4 8 4 in the 217mhz.or 2.5 4 4 8 4 in the 233 or above.
This is that you must do a test.

In the single channel,The bios setting is 2 6 3 3.
But in the dual channel is conversed 2 8 4 4.
I want to say difference in FASB 200 AND 166 AN 133.
ex ddr400 define 40ns = 25 mhz
in ex 133mhz 133/25 ~5....,the bios maybe see 5 or 6.
in ex 166mhz 166/25 ~6....,the bios maybe see 6 or 7
in ex 166mhz 200/25 ~8....,the bios maybe see 8 or 9

So in the INTEL875 ,YOU WILL SEE 2 4 4 8 4.
You can set 2 4 4 8 4 ,271MHZ.

But if you setting 2 6 3 3 ,it is more critical than 2 8 4 4.
You can refere other SPEC(COSAIR,OCZ......)

But we have modified the process.
