View Full Version : Antec Cyclone vs Antec Super Cyclone

I've ordered an EVGA Superclocked 8800GT and thought I should invest in a little extra cooling. I was thinking of buying the Antec Cyclone or Super Cyclone to this effect as I don't want to void my warranty by replacing the stock HSF.
The Antec Cyclone is single slot and only has one setting where it pushes 22 CFM at 28 DBA.

The Antec Syper Cyclone is dual slot and has 3 settings, 20CFM at 24DBA, 24.5CFM at 32.1DBA and 37.5CFM at 39DBA.

Both fans have their pros and cons. The Cyclone is single slot which allows me more flexibility with motherboards and future use with a new PC (I'm planning on getting an ABIT IP35, IP35 Pro or IX38 Quad GT for this build). Seems to push a decent amount of air at 28DBA which seems ok.
A quiet PC, however, is a major concern, and the Super Cyclone affords me the opportunity to drop 4DBA for only 2CFM at its lowest setting. Then I can set it to medium when gaming if needed. However, it takes up two slots which may restrict which builds I use it in. I don't think I'm going with Crossfire or SLI again so it might not be an issue.
Any thoughts?

These kind of gadgets are pointless. Probably not worth getting.

You dont void your warranty with eVGA, as long as you dont break the card installing the aftermarket cooling or break it with the use of aftermarket cooling ( like a water leak).
Its perfectly fine to buy an aftermarket cooler like the Thermalright HR-03 GT.

Do you have some info I can review regarding these? I've read several reviews of both items suggesting some improvment in GPU temps.
antec fans SUCK. I won a contest by registering my p180b when I bought it at antec's site and they sent me a free fan. To make it simple, it SUX. Its noisy, pushes like no air, the settings are pretty much no cfm, no cfm+slight noise, jet engine without cfm. Go with the thermaltake duo orb for single slot or the zalman vf1100 for dual slot, those are my two picks (the hr-03 gt outperforms both but is triple slot with a fan and also much more expensive with a fan)

and here's the vf 1100 (isn't out yet so here's a picture and I linked the vf 1000 above, biggest differences are color and fan size)

I am running the Antec Super Cyclone under my 8800 Ultra and it does make a huge difference. At least a good 5c difference from the hot air from the 8800 being take out of the case as opposed to being left in. I enjoy the Super Cyclone as its build quality is much sturdier than the regular single slot Cyclone. As well, the option of being able to change the fan speed at will for performance vs. noise is a nice plus. I also find the Super Cyclone at lower speeds still pushes more air than the Cyclone at a full 12v. For the price of $10 it is definitely worth it. I have had mine running for just about 4 months now without issue.

As Polizei said, replacing the stock cooler on your card is fine as long as you keep all the stock screws, RAM thermal pads, etc. If you lose the screws, especially, you'll play hell finding replacements.

+1. Works great lowering case temps with cards that output a portion of the exhaust back into the case. Super cyclone works great and very quiet on low.

A guy over on diy-street said his temps dropped from 72 under load to 61 just by adding an exhaust fan right under the card...worth a try at least. I would go with the Super Cyclone though since it allows you to adjust..

Ok thanks guys, I think I'll go with the Super Cyclone then.
BTW, I noticed Thermaltake had one as well which is similar to the Antec Cyclone but pushes the same amount of air at a lot less noise:

Any thoughts on this model?

thermaltake lies a lot if it comes to cfm and noise... their products arent better, they just lie more than others.

Well, if you really want control then just buy a really high CFM unit and throw it on a fan controller.
