Does it have to be LCD?
If you aren't wall-mounting, you best bet is a Sony Bravia SXRD 50" DLP, or one of the new Samsung 50" DLP's with LED backlighting. Both are under $2k.

doesn't lcd have the best picture quality?
Plasma (superior blacks, contrast, etc because of no CCFL) and now OLED LCD's own the quality title.
Sharp Aquos :)
+1 I have a 46" Aquos in my room, easily the best LCD display Ive ever used.
Used to exclusively use Samsung for LCD TV's, then saw an Aquos in the mall and fell in love with it.

DLP has better blacks and contrast than LCD, also far superior horizontal viewing angles. You can get a bigger, better picture for cheaper.
LCD monitors will be sharper, but will also exaggerate any flaws. Non-HD content will look worse.
DLP will produce a smoother, more film-like image, but still be plenty crisp.

SXRD is sony's LCOS variant, it's not DLP.
If you want big, DLP is best bang for the buck. If you must get an LCD, check out the aquos for sure. I just got a 32" aquos and it's stunning. Just don't get a 50+, they had big time banding issues last I checked.
AVSforum.com is a much better place to ask. There's TONS of great information there as well.

+1 with afireinside on all points. DLP looks great and handles motion well (modern ones do). The LED backlighting is also a lot more reliable than bulb variants.
Aquos' -- they're amazing. I love mine, he loves his, they're the best LCD TV's out bar none. If you want plasma.. take a look at Panasonic's and Hitachi's. Oh yea, and it's true, AVSForum rocks.

If you're PC gaming or doing any PC use on the TV, you want an LCD since rear projection and plasma can still suffer from burn-in (although not all that easy to do). I just don't see the logic in spending close to $2000 on one and take that risk. The new LCDs also have the best image quality IMO.
With that, good 50" LCDs are over $2000 (at least here in Canada). As mentioned the Sharp Aquos is an excellent screen, both the 42" and 46" screens have got excellent reviews and if you ever see them in a store vs most other LCDs, you can tell the difference. I personally, however, just bought a 42" Toshiba Regza 1080P LCD for $1199 on Boxing Day which was $100 cheaper than the Aquos and it looked just as amazing. In fact, both BestBuy and FutureShop use the Regza as their "high definition" home theater display LCD. I would recommend either the Aquos or the Regza.

Burn-in on a rear projection TV? Tell me how to burn an image onto a mirror.

I'm not exactly sure what you are talking about since I believe all rear projection TVs use a mirror. From my understanding, the burn in actually occurs on the screen not on the mirror. Regardless, it is a well known fact the CRT based rear projection TVs are susceptible to burn-in.
Of course, LCD rear projection TVs are not susceptible to burn-in. I think the same goes with DLP TVs. I was just making a general statement as to the TVs that are susceptible to burn-in and didn't specify which technologies are exceptions.

A DLP is a rear-projection TV. I assumed that is what you were talking about since it is the "current" rear-projection TV technology.

Disrupt, we have a philips ambilight plasma in our house.
I don't know anything about other lcds, but this displays a backlight in the color of the picture that you are watching.
It's really really nice and I cannot imagine watching tv without it. It makes it a lot easier to focus on the picture
