Starting to test my QX9650 under ln2 and so far its looking to be a good one... Its very hard for me to run at these speeds cos my motherboard is very buggy, still waiting for its replacement to come in but for now this will have to do....
Specs
QX9650 L742Axxx xxxxx06 ( thanks Hipro5 )
DFI LP P35-T2R ( 1.43v max cpuvtt )
Ballistix 8500
DA750
Raptors 36g
9250 pci video
This is my first quadcore and also my first cpu with high multi so I was really lost setting wise but Im getting there... Also this cpu on ln2 acts very different than my E6600 and it took a while for me to get to know her... From initial test, coldboot is at -125c while coldbug is at -174c, I cant wait to see what this thing can do on a mobo that works properly....
Havent really done much bench wise, Im just mostly playing around and getting to know the cpu... Ill update and add more pics when my new mobo arrives which should be soon.... Also I took a short vid of her rebooting at -172c but I cant upload it
Spi 1M...

cpuz valid... @ 1.95v I think, my mobo was so buggy so the next one I tried was 6ghz which obviously failed lol....

Im very happy so far and looks like shes got alot of potential but as soon as the E8500 comes Im selling this cos I need some fsb action:D .... The numbers so far are good but it feels like something is missing when benching at only 400 or so fsb....

WOW..nice chip.......coldbug at -174 is pretty good for these chips:)
Thanks... I was really surprised.... Just now I checked the accuracy of my thermometer and it seems my thermocouple is not reading right cos I dipped it in ln2 and it was reading -182c.. I used my other one ( J-type ) and it read -192 so Ill use this one next time... coldbug could actually be -184c lol..
Very nice!

Thanks.. The store I got it from gave me the option to replace it with teh DFI X38 so Im going with that.... If I didnt hate Asus so much I would have gotten a P5K, but I really like the clean socket area of the DFI...
luihed-san,
Good job!!:toast:

Thank you very much omega-san, its an honour having you in my thread ...:)
The cpu has alot of potential but during bench my temp under load was very bad so its hard to finish even just 1M... I suspect a bad mount cos I am experimenting with a new mount like your team ( screw from top ), I will try again using conventional way tonight and see if that was the issue....

just imagine what you will do with a board that supports it properly, when you get the x-38 be sure to post some updates. I'm interested in clock per clock differences, the x-38 should be a little faster. (at least that is what i told myself when i ordered it..lol.)
looks like a great chip, did you get to choose batch or was it pure luck?

Looks really good and your cpu looks like a good one eh? ;).
About your dfi, what happens when you try to give more cpu vtt?.
THC and i are benching on one and it is really special (only boot with pci-e and not pci and first pci-e port is dead), but when you know the motherboard and how its act it is really good, our board runs 600fsb+, but we need more cpu vtt than 1.6v.
Keep pushing it.

Thanks guys....
Going with an Asus board will be the very very very very last resort and only if this cpu is really that good, or if they give me a free one..... Theyre probably the best choice but not after what Ive gone through with them and how I was treated in the process..... But thanks for the recomendations.....
The temperature I said above especially the -174c coldbug was actually not accurate so please ignore that for now... I did some testing yesterday and I actually got up to -180c lol, then the " something is not right " bell rang in my head and I know it cant be right..... The temp in my thermometr is accurate but I think Im not getting good contact so eventhough the base temp is that low, actual cpu temp could be alot warmer than that, Unfortunately the monitor DFI is using can only go down to -128 so I have no clue ..... In the end it looks like the cpu heatspreader is not flat so before the year is over I did the most stupid thing for this yaer and lapped this $1G cpu lol..... Ill update tommorrow with hopefully more accurate #s....
@Oliver, when I set the cpuvtt to 1.6v ( bios max ) I only get 1.43v; at default, I get 1.07v instead of 1.2v... only foir QX, for E6600 its fine ( 1.6v gets 1.58v actual )
@Jimmy, Luck is always needed but I did get to choose from maybe 13-15 cpus from 4 diff stores and all of them have the exact same stepping... So at the end I went with the one with the lowest ( last 2 digits) serial # ( dont know what its called ) like Hipro5 mentioned somewhere and got this cpu.... Cpu BTW is oem so you see the actual chip...
@George. Yes...I dont need a Quad and rather have E8500 + DDR3..
@Hipro5, Thanks again bro... Thats actually the board Ill go with if I have to go Anus but this cpu purchase is over my budget already so DDR3 will have to wait till I sell this cpu...

Okay, thank you for the information.
Do you know if it with all qx both 65/45nm and maybe other quad cores or is it only 45nm qx?.
Could be interesting to test.
Keep pushing it champ.
Like Vince said once ago, i do also like how your overclocking how grow in the lats.
You are doing a really good push.
Keep pushing it.

I swallowed my pride and ordered the Maximus Extreme but I got a call from the store and my RMA was rejected cos there was a problem with my last RMA... So for now Ill jsut have to do with this board, its very buggy but nothing I can do at this point.....
@Oliver, its only with the QX... supposedly the 45nm vtt is from 1.1v to 1.4v unlike the 65nm cpus ... its normal I guess...
Lil update... Still having a tough time finishing any sort of benchmark over 512kb spi so might as well go for the shortest bench lol.... @ 2v....

Unless this cpu acts differently on the new board this is as far as I go;) ... I never tried anything higher cos Im not really comfortable running this much voltage, WR is not close enough to even consider breaking.... Im just hoping a new board will let me run some benches,Ive been blaming the board this whole time and it could be me thats limiting my oc  ......

Hello luihed, you got problems like this ?:
I have some serious problems..
So i have this kit, with the last bios ( 12/24 ), if i set something from the bios, what need to reset the board ( like changing the FSB or changing the latencies ) i got 88 error code and thats all. If i turn off the system from the power button and i wait like 10 min and i turn on after that everything works fine with the new bios settings.
If i turn off the PSU or unplug the power cord or smth like that, after power on the coolers spins up, but the diagnostic led wont light up .
If i swap the cpu with another one ( E6700, E6850, E2140 ) its ok, and after that when i put back the QX9650 its ok too.

Hello luihed, you got problems like this ?:
Exactly.... and thanks for the the tip:D ... Some days in scenerio#2 I use the JP1 jumper instead of the clear cmos, wait maybe 30sec and I get the led back.. sometimes taking out the batt and clearing both cmos the the jumper beside it fixes the problem as well....
But thats only half of it, 14.5x doesnt work, setting vcore at 1.6 + 120% gives me anywhere from 1.88v to 1.95v, wont run 2 dimms sometimes etc, etc... Its so unfortunate cos I really love this board....:(
Very nice going there luihed. :)
Whats the load temps at say 5.7G (VCore?)?

I hope will be a bios for it, and i hope it will works with wolfdales like a charm.
I love this board too.
Anyway, nice results :).

KTE, only thing Ive finished at over 5.7gs is spi1M and loadtemp according to SG is around -100c, container base temp at around -175c, vcore @1.95v...
M3kk, I think its more than a bios issue, DFI said that rev A1-A3 needs some fixing which is not needed for revA4 boards, not really clear on what exactly needs fixing though.... I checked the stock in town for a possible RMA but they are all revA1... :(
Where can i see the rev? Thats suck then.. :(.
PS : Got it, R : A11 on the sticker and rev : A1 on the PCB.

M3kk, youre going to love me brotha cos I may have fixed our problem, Im still testing but so far so good..... The root of our problem is that we are bending the mobo's pcb when we mount our coolers and it seems the mobo is very sensitive when using a QX.... Even the slightest bend upsets the mobo somehow and all the crazy stuff starts happening, so the fix is to keep your mobo as straight as possible.... I made a brass plate that covers the cpu area all the way to the i/o side of the mobo and for the first time I didnt have any boot problems :D..... I still have some lil issues but the main problem didnt exist last night, it felt like I was benching with a new board or cpu lol.....
Ill take a pic of the mod I did but basically its just an extended backplate, its held by the 4 mounting screws and the 2 screws that holds the pwm heatsink near the edge of the board ( the ones that screws from the bottom).... I hope it fixes your issues as well.....
As always, I figure something out just when Im low on ln2 lol..... couple of updates, I think this cpu has alot more in her too, but I feel like I just started all over again cos everything acts differently now lol..... Only thing that sux is now idle coldbug is -155c, coldboot at -135c...

Well.. i put the TR Ultra 120 extreme heatsink on the processor, without mounting or anything, and i had same problem.. With other cpus no problem.
No the board wont post, if i try qx9650 on it, 88 and reset, rest rest :(.

Sorry to hear that it didnt work for you... I know how frustrating it is and if I can think of anything else Ill let you know.... Our situation was very similar and I figure the solution would be similar as well, this board nevr had problems with my E6600 which I use 24/7, only with the QX....
Maybe try to install it with alot of pressure on the mount but at the same time have the board straight as possible... Theres a possibility that having the board straight but not having enough pressure on the cpu will cause it not to boot.... My e6600 sometimes wont boot if I dont tighten the mounting screws enough.... Good luck anyways.... BTW I have both fdd power connector plugged in the mobo, not sure if it helps but I thought Id mention it anyways....
Very good. Excellent CPU.
Thanks man...

Its oem, L742xxxx.... I dont know the xxx part cos I lapped it....
Havent tried it on air but on water it did just under 5ghz validated and 4850mhz spi1M using ~1.62v vcore.... Not sure min vcore for 4ghz, I dont use it too much 24/7 but when I do I set it at 1.52v @ 4400mhz.... I dont test for stability but it nevr crashed on me at those settings.....

Lui, did you change your PSU when applied that backplate?
I ask this because i tried today with my other two PSU -s, and with the Sirtec 500W it works with Qx9650.
Its ridiculous, with my Zeus 1200W and with OP1000 i have troubles with this board + qx9650 , but with the cheap sirtec 500W work like a charm :D.
Now i`m using again the zeus one, until now its ok too, but i`m fearing to witch off from PSU :D.
