A while ago I got hold of some slitting saws, but had no way to use them on my mill. I'm making some new blocks soon with a diamond pin design - slitting saws are perfect for doing these, so it was time to make a collet for them.

I had a fly cutter that I rarely use and I'd seen someone build a collet based around one of these. Took it apart and measured it up.

Then make this on the lathe:

#1 - On the left is the taper from the fly cutter. On the right is my collet. I needed to machine a hole to fit the protrusion, and matching slots on the side.

#2 - slitting saw fits snugly over this 'nipple'

#3 - Saw on 'nipple'

#4 - base washer with cavity to clear 'nipple'

#5 - assembled. A bolt runs through the whole thing into the taper. The side blocks (can't think of appropriate term) stop it slipping on the taper (they also fit into slots on the mill).

I've got 1.5mm and 0.8mm thick saws.

GPU, maybe NB, and HD blocks to come in a few weeks.

Very very nice!

I just have one of those cheap $15 collets, which works ok, don't look at the drill chuck I'm using in the above photos:( I did finally afford to buy a full set of ER40 spring collets.

Thanks for sharing!...I think I'll make something very similar (but just a 7/8" shank) out of 7/8" brass bar stock I have on hand:up:

Good luck on the block work. I've found it just takes way too much time to ever make it worth it for selling, but it's still fun trying out different ideas.

I originally made a collet that fit into a drill chuck, but it would occaisonally spin in the chuck - which was bad for the the chuck and gouged the metal on the collet. Needed something that could handle more force.

Nice looking block - that's pretty much what my GPU block base is going to look like.

Yep, takes waayy to much time to be worth selling, but I enjoy the process and it saves me money over buying blocks, so it's worth it for making blocks for me. Though I did buy a CPU block.
