Ok. So I have been thinking about doing this for a while now.

I really don't hardcore game with my computer like it is built for. I just use it for school work and internet with the occasional Crysis and COD4.

Right now I have a 680i with a 8800Ultra. I have though about selling those two and picking up a p5k-e and (2) 2900Pro's and flashing them to XT bios ($160 each on newegg..can't beat that price) I would have about $240 left over after I sold those two and purchased the p5k and 2900's.

Would it be beneficial to switch to that combo? Should I get some 3870's over the 2900's? I haven't seen to much that leads me to believe the 3870's are that much better.

the 3870 isnt much faster than the 2900 but it uses half of the power, and with the oc that u can get from moving to the p35 it would out perform in most cases

u might want to spend the extra money for the x38 and go for the abit quad gt x38 since it will have a 3rd 16x slot for tri or quadfire (3870x2 for quad) and it has 2x 16x pci-e2 slots for the initial cards

be careful with those 2900pros for 160, I do not believe you can flash them to the xt bios, because they have a 256bit mem interface rather than the 512 that the old pros had. for that price, you should get the 3850s.
