I'm working on a new HSF for my 9800 NP. It's still quite raw at the moment. I'm sticking with air for now, and don't want to do anything that will void my warranty - yet. :D
It's aluminum, but a pretty decent chunk of it (at least compared to the stock cooling). I'm trying to decide on the best way to cut some shallow channels on the back to make absolutely sure the shim isn't interfering with contact with the die.
Ideas?

Put a peice of glass over the core and shim to see if the shim is higher than the core or not. Then go about cutting channels.

Looks like they are pretty even. Here's a shot of a piece of glass with 4 different marks made by the same layer of thermal paste I had put on the core in successive presses of the glass against the shim (not pressing on the glass above the core).

you could just take the shim off and then you could be sure you had good contact
you can always epoxy it back on, i took mine off when i modded my 9800, not too hard to do...

I guess maybe I'll try drilling the holes and see if it seems to work without the channels first.
