View Full Version : Reporting hacker IPs

My steam account and yahoo e-mail account haven been hijacked couple of days ago. Gotta admit I deserved it using the same password for the both accounts. Big, stupid mistake, I know.:shakes: .

Anyway I got both of the accounts back no problem (couple of e-mails and phone calls). I was expecting much worse.

So I checked my yahoo account and found two emails sent to steam and yahoo in order to change the passwords and from them I was able to get the hacker's IP address.

What's the steps from now? How can I effectively report this IP? What kind of outcome I should expect?

Any input will greatly be appreciated.

First step is alerting your ISP, unfortunately in most cases whoever that is won't take any action. The IP you have may be a dead end anyway, if the person on the other end knew what they we're doing, it's a spoofed or proxied address.

I found their ISP and reported the incident there. Yes it's a long shot but even if they ban these IPs and give teh hackers a slight annoyance, it's better than nothing. I wish there was a step by step guide on how to pinpoint IPs and report abuse cases.

The IPs people often retieve are often not of the "hacker" but of a proxied machine.
Your response should depend on the crime.
More often than not an email should go to abuse@isp.com
Even if the machine is proxying the isp will fire of a warning email/letter and if the machine keeps misbehaving they will disconnect it.

If you or a company have suffered a financial loss then you should report it to your local law enforcement who will give you a crime reference number for insurance purposes and they will most probably pass it on.

Keep in mind though that most special branches are so over streached at the moment a crime of this nature will probably never be solved.
