Hi guys,

I'm trying reduce my choices: with D5 should i use 3/8, 7/16, 1/2 ID tubes and what are the pros/cons for each choice?

I would like to stay away from 1/2 cause they look to fat IMO.

Also if I should decide to go for a DDC pump: does the same thing (your thoughts about tubing diameters) apply to DDC in the same context?

Thanx!

7/16 is quite popular these days. thinwall 7/16 takes a lot less space in the case.

1/2 off the pump. Its hard to squeeze on, 7/16 is extremely hard to get on that pump. Tho they are 1/2 barbs the lip is quite a bit larger.

I use needlenose inserted in the tubing then opened to stretch it. Tygon is very tough and you won't even need clamps :)

So 3/8 would be a no-no for D5 unless I mod the plastic barbs a bit?

Also you 7/16 say tygon wont need slamps on d5 you say... What about masterkleer as an alternative or even that ClearFLEX stuff they sell over at Over-clock.uk? (only 3/8 as far as i can see)

I konw tygon is the best, but, are those alternatives worse than tygon by any realisticaly important margin?
I notice that their bent radiuses are very simmilar... any other hidden characteristic?

If you want 3/8 the mcp355 is a better option anyway

I use Masterkleer. It's a good, cheap alternative to Tygon.

Clearflex60 is not very good: fogs up right away. MasterKleer is pretty nice but a lot higher durometer than Tygon. It seems to hold up well though.

It also has a slight blue tinge to it under UV :)

I have used 3/8" ID (5/8" OD) many times with my old D5. You boil some water in a glass, stick the tube end in there for 30 seconds and then push like the devil.

It works fine and no clamp is required.

Good old 7/16"ID x 5/8" OD Masterkleer or Tygon 3603 work just fine. And you can get 3/8" on it, I use the same method CD mentioned with the needlenose plyers.

With that method I've been able to get 1/2" tubing on a 3/4" barb. Just need to streatch it out a bit and after it shrinks back up, you've got a really nice seal.

Thanx guys for you answers!

So:
1. If I go only for the 3/8 its a better solution than 7/16 for DDC and no clamps usage. (is this just cause of smaller barb or does dia. of tubing makes it a bette choice)

2. And 3/8 will also fit the D5 plastic barb with some more effort than on DDC but with even better seal.

Is that about right?

Any other info or quirks I should concider that would help me choose between tygon and masterkleer?

I just tried putting 7/16 MasterKleer on my new D5 (yay!). It's a struggle, and once it's on it's ON. Can't rotate the tubing at all, I don't think I'll need any clamp on that. :D I'm pretty happy with the bend radius of the tubing, but it kinks easily if you're not careful.

3/8" ID tubing will go over the D5 barbs - have done it frequently (by hand, no pliers or other tools - which is rather painful on the thumbs), and it really won't come off... ever... without the use of a blade.

7/16" over the D5's barbs (makes no difference whether Tygon or Masterkleer...), still a tight fit, but can be pulled off by hand.

1/2" over D5, clamps required fer certain.

Tygon vs Masterkleer... read the Tubing sticky, particularly the impact of tubing size (which will show you performance difference between 3/8, 7/16, 1/2), and the comparison of 18 different tubing types. Personally, don't bother with Tygon. Pointlessly expensive. Masterkleer does the job more than adequately.

Thanks Marci for your straight to the point answers.
I already sent you guys a message (Steve) regarding your web shop not being able to calculate my shipping costs and therefore not accepting my order.

Have I sent my mail to the right place or is there another way to do it?

Masterkleer 7/16" ID is all I would sell if people didn't insist that we carry other things. It's great.
