Hey Guys,
I am 17 Yo and am currently looking around for components for my first build. I'm currently looking at the:
Asus Maximus Formula (Special Edition) MOBO
Intel Q6600 Quad Core CPU
Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 2GB (2x XMS2 1GB) PC-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 RAM
D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G 108MPS
GeForce 8800GTS KO 640MB Graphics card
Antec Truepower Quattro 1000W PSU
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate X64 bit edition
Gigabyte 3D Mercury LC Case
for starters.
Does this look ok? Would you recommend any changes? Do you have an idea on where to buy this at a fairly cheap price? I'm super excited and wanted to know that im deciding on good parts.
Cheers, :)

overkill on the psu (the one you have chosen is much more than you will need probably)
maximus only if you go crossfire with amd/ati cards. (although it is a good board)
8800gts 512MB (g92 version) a revised higher performance card.
staticice is a good website for searching for best price in australia for online shopping/computer parts.
http://www.staticice.com.au/
for example:
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=8800gts+512 - 8800gts 512MB (using staticice search function)
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=8800gt+512 - also the 8800gt 512MB - a cheaper very good card.
it is exciting; hope it goes well for you.
what screen do you propose using?

Thanks man, i was hoping to SLI the system when i get a bit more cash under my belt. What would you recommend on the PSU and MOBO if i was to change it?
Cheers.
Nate P.
12-09-2007, 08:41 PM
You can't do SLI with that board. Only Crossfire. I would recommend a P35 motherboard like the DFI UT P35-T2R. For the PSU, I'd get a PC Power & Cooling 750W Silencer.
I wouldn't recomemend that case. I'd go with a custom water cooling setup.

The other cases i was looking at was the Antec Nine Hundred Gaming Case and the Gigabyte 3D Aurora. What are your opinions to these case's if not these what would you recommend? I'm not to familiar with cases but i have been going off reviews such as 3dGameMan.com and this forum in particular.
Nate P.

Haha, don't trust 3DGameMan. All he does is restate what the manufacturer already said.
The 900 isn't that good for water cooling either. I suggest the Mountain Mods H2G0 (having one myself) it's an AWESOME case.

haha, thanks man, i was starting to get sick of listening to his voice anyway. The case looks bit 'different' for me, but i can definitely see how it is awesome. But i can't find any in Aus.

pcpower and cooling...hard to find in aussie.
If so, I HIGHLY recommend Silverstone PSU's. I have one, rock solid rails and clean power.

the seasonic's are rock solid aswell :p:

I'm looking at bot LC and Air, as i want to have LC on CPU and for graphics, but want to have air flowing through the case to keep the MOBO and general case as cool as possible. what would you recommend Watt wise as a minimum?
adamsleath
12-09-2007, 09:22 PM
watts can vary- important to note 12v amps.
i wouldnt go below corsair 620hx personally - quiet and powerful...
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=108088 - a list of psu's by tier.
what is the quietest of the silverstone psu's in tier one.?????????

if ur gonna be going liquid, get around the 700watt area and if u are going to SLI
the corsair 620watt, PCP&C 610/750 are also good, seasonic, OCZ 700watt are a list of some good ones
i havent LC so i couldnt give u more info on that
mobo wise, if ur gonna want to SLI, the only option u have ATM is the EVGA/XFX/other brand 680i sli motherboard.

+1 for antec 900 not being good for water cooling.
I have one & its awesome on air just impossible to fit rads into. Hence why I'm going to make an external enclosure for rads once I get my Stuff :s.
I personally went for a Zalman power supply 600W seems small now but that was over a year ago before all these massive ones came out & it works perfect so not complaining.

I consider the Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570 then, i've heard good reviews on it, and has holes for a LCS already, and taking your advice on a custom lcs then i might get a 3x120mm radiator.

Asus Maximus Formula SE
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 2GB kit
D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G 108MPS
GeForce 8800GT or GTS 512mb
Corsair HX620 PSU
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition
As for cases, there's a number of choices. Lian-Li are probably among the best for being water cooling friendly. There's the G70B or A70 or A71, v1200, v2000 or v2100. The SilverStone TJ07 is good too.

Get a real powersupply. This is a true badboy which dominates:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817608007
Also, there is no such thing as overkill on a PSU. And its not our fault that the high load ones also provide the cleanest power.. ETASIS is TIER 1 in PSU. Meaning it sits at the TOP, its a industrial class so its built for stress.
8800GT can be bought for a little more then the 8800GTS. The 8800GT keeps up with the 8800GTX and it also runs a lot cooler. So id go with a 8800GT instead. Heres one for about 309.99 and it should easily kill a 8800GTS ver.1
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150254
OH GOWD DO NOT GET THAT CASE. The liquid cooling system on it is absolutely crappy. It will only keep up with high end air. I suggest you do some research on watercooling before you buy stuff for it. Going the fast route will only lead to cursing and hating.
Once you know the basics on watercooling, come back and ask for case and cooling system recomendations.
EDIT: i didnt see your from aussy. Ummm.. just look for part numbers.

Fair enough, I've looked at the Silverstone TJ07 more, whats your thought on it? i was a little concerned at the first prices i was looking at it first but then i got on a link provided up top and found it cheaper. so i am happy with it... I know a bit about water cooling, i want to try and keep it as cool as possible that my aim, i figured bigger radiator, larger surface area, will keep it at a fairly low temp. Am i right on that?
Thanks for all your help guys! :D

Ok I've decided on the following,
Silverstone TJ07 Case
Silverstone DA750w PSU
P35 DFI UT P35-T2R Mobo OR THE Asus Maximus Formula Special Edition Mobo
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU
GeForce 8800GT Graphics Card
Cruical Ballistic (2x1Gb) Ram Kit
D-Link Airplus Xtreme G 108mps Wireless card.
But i'm still stuck on MOBO, choose between the two. The Maximus Formula is sweet as we know, but the P35-T2R has it.
Could someone help me on the matter? :)
Cheers

yeh i have, but for that brand im looking at 250 + aussy dollars, bit much for for ram, if i go corsair i could get that for around 200 bucks. All about the brand...
Does anyone know much about the P5K Premium MOBO, looks like a nice piece to me, i was also told that the P35 DFI P35-T2R is the exact same as the Asus Maximus Special Edition just with a different sticker. Can anyone confirm?
I'm trying to find a decent priced high end Mobo (aren't we all) anyone have anymore recommendations?

CM Stacker T01 is also a very good case with water upgradeability in the future.
You may want to check it out if the TJ-07 is too pricey for you.

No way, the DFI is a P35 board and the ASUS is a X38. COMPLETELY different boards. The DFI gets my vote.

no the p5e and maximus are similar boards.
dfi is supposedly the ducks nuts @ a mere $400 ish aud.

seen the DFI for $351.23, I'll most likely go with that one, Cant get the maximus for under $380. I thought the DFI was better two, more PCI, etc etc. for anyone wanting to know my budget i'm aiming around $1500 - $2000, and so far i can get everything everyone has recommended for anywhere between 1600 and 1800 bucks (depending on store). So i'm happy. Will slowly Mod it more as i get some extra cash.... Could anyone explain to me why there is a $110 difference between the black and silver TJ07? heres the link. http://pcmaniacs.com.au/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=TJ07&x=0&y=0
The store isn't replying yet, i found it odd...

Yeah fair enough on the case, i may as well get the silver one and save 100 bucks. i wanted the black, but 100 bucks for color isn't really worth it to me.
