you only need to pay until its flat
you should notice how unflat it is as you go by the amount of copper that begins to show in different areas. And I would lapp the cooler too, going to help you achieve the best temps that way.
there are some good lapping guides out there, google how to lap a cpu and you will find them

i never use those low grit papers, i always start with 800, the link in my signature shows my lap using 800-2000 grit wet sand and a big glass table, came out perfectly flat and grade a+ mirror with no polish

Well I don't know for AMD IHS, but for my C2D I had to use 200 or it would have taken forever to remove the nickel. I actually started with 400, and after 20-30 min I could only see like 1mm of copper on the edges, so I went for 200. In few minutes I got ride of the nickel and then used 400, 600, ... to remove the big scratches.

u want to be finishing on 1500-2000 grit paper really. anything less and its still to rough to get a proper flat surface with good contact.

you'll want to go higher then 600..try automotive store, they sell much higher
As for your dead cpu, thats sucks man
I don't really see how you could kill it just by lapping it unless you bent some pins, (I believe those AMD are pins?) or if there were metal pieces in the some of the pins and caused some shorts
Your supposed to clean it off with alcohol before you put it back into your computer.
Sorry to hear though.

i used kleenex's/alcohol to wipe off the top, and i blew inbetween the pins if there were any metal shards in there to get out.
anywyas, new cpu is going good, testing it now at 2.7 with 1.45v (cant go higher than that..)
