View Full Version : 3870 @ 1200MHz Core w just Dry Ice

LardArse
12-05-2007, 11:12 PM
Finally got some 3870 to play with :D
So far testing with Dry Ice, too lazy to cut the blocks down smaller, the temperature is just around -39C once it gets to benching.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/6012/3870dicexd5.jpg

-39C is actually enough for 1200MHz Core!! With just a low 4.25GHz CPU, 16.4K 3D Mark 06!!

http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/7038/92431866iq9.jpg

With 1.75v @ 1200MHz
However, the card doesn't even break 1100MHz core until the Over Current Protection is removed! Here's how ;) (http://forum.foxconnchannel.com/TitleDetail.aspx?ID1=797909A6-8B22-4030-9954-0B5CB43B675F&ID2=90A64F8B-E54F-43A0-9676-98CB8E393B06&ID3=A033532C-69A1-416C-BBE1-18C8F3574FBF&Name1=Quantum+Force&Name2=MARS&Name3=3870+%40+1200MHz+Core+w+just+Dry+Ice)

How much does this equate to a 2900XT? 1100MHz core?

Much bigger inductors....

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/4848/12774867bw1.jpg

These cores are really the rejects, they require lots of volts to run the same mhz as 2900. Good thing these cards are easier to tame than 2900, the main heat is from core clocks, raising voltage by +0.1v creates only the same amount of heat as raising ~20MHz of the core.

Very nice Peter!

I would estmate that your 3870 clocks is pretty equal to a 2900XT running 1160-1180MHz core with 950-980MHz frame buffer, it might even be just as fast. That GDDR4 speed offers alot of bandwidth wich should be enough to compensate for the 256-bit interface. In my testing on air cooling if you max 3870 and 2900 frame buffer freq with gpu set at 800MHz the perf is pretty equal in 06.

What exactly help it with more capacitors ?
Where does the OCP start being a problem ?
What would you recommend to be the max vcore for 24/7 if I want to keep it for 1 year minimum ? (finally I have found out I need to save for driving license and a car :P)

Going to run them on High-end Watercooling.

thanks

Edit: One more thing. Did you remove the component on the other side off the PCB on the spot marked in the pic ?

norway i think its better to have an overkill and have no need to find out where all the pwm limit is to begin with, thats what i always try to do

its an emtpy pad not removed. I'm setting up a water rig with the cards myself and plan to do the ocp and vmods and just add a cap or two only.

also on a side note. i have done the ocp mod on my 3850 works great. but now i cant even get a 1026mhz run. cause my mosfets are getting ragging hot even with copper sinks super glued to them AND a 120mm fan. i cant even touch the sink for more then a second when im benching. there are contact points for some more caps that the 3870s have and the 3850s don't. so i might just have to add the caps on the contacts tonight and see.. but any info on helping those mosfets i would LOVE YOU! :D  :yepp:
