There are plenty of mods for this board. Because it uses the P5K Deluxe PCB the mods are the same.

Well seeing as I just got this board and could not find an "Official" thread I thought I would start one!
Through various forums there's a little confusion about this board. The P5K-E is a P5K Deluxe PCB. The main differances include one less ethernet controller and not as much copper heat-pipeing.
At this time the 0602 Bios seems to be the most reliable with the recent batch bringing volt issues.
Benching my E6600 tonight and will hopefully have my Crucial 8500's here tomorrow :)
First board I got today didn't boot up, but the replacement seems great so far.

Make sure to cool the vregs well, the stock cooling barely makes contact and if you overvolt at all, they get REALLY hot.

Is it worth taking it off and putting a layer of Artic Silver on there?
Nice to finally see an official thread about this mainboard, there are plenty of users here at XS with this board.
Any word on a new 45nm supporting bios?
It seems the later ones with 45nm support are well bugged regarding voltages.
I like this board a lot, very stable, good overclocking potential but the NB heatsink runs blistering hot with 1.7V on it, i mounted a 40mm fan on it.

Yea, but I would use ceramique or something similar for this kind of application.

What I really want to see in here is how much perfomance is added when you throw another 3870 in for crossfire. I want to get a second one but I'm worried that the x4 will rob it of so much performance it won't be worth it.

Since I'm new to this forum, greetings to all the members :)
It's good to see an official thread for this mobo. I'm just one of (hopefully) happy owners. Bought that one about a week ago and just started OCing (my previous gigabyte had a "no-oc-at-all" syndrome...).
Look out for a new BIOS. A new one (0901) has been provided for a "naked" np-wifi P5K-E recently. Should be a matter of days for us to get an update from ASUS... As for me - I'm still using the one originally flashed (0503) and feel satisfied (knowing about all the problems reported for 0806).
As for the mods... I might not be a keen overclocker (only a modest OC in progress), but with a voltage damper enabled, I haven't noticed any drop so far. On the other hand - voltage on desktop differs from the one set in BIOS by 0.025 (default 1.325 set, for some reason only 1.3 on desktop). I've not tested the voltages with damper disabled (might be a question of that feature?).
And by the way... PECI enabled. BIOS temperature readings look realistic, but PC Probe shows lowered CPU temps (seems to be a common problem reported by a lot of users). Dunno whether it might be accurate for all of you, but it seems that the correct offset for a CPU Temp in SpeedFan (TCase, not cores - these looks to be reported correctly by CoreTemp and require a +15 offset in SpeedFan) should be about 7 +/- 1 degrees.

So far I like the board.
I have it paired with a Q6600
One thing i dont like is where they put the IDE plug.
I like to put my Haupauge PVR-500 in this slot but it is very long and sits right on the cable.

My results from dampner and the pencil mod.
No Mod/No Dampner
1.45 bios
1.41 idle
1.36 load
No Mod/Dampner
1.45 bios
1.424 idle
1.408 load
Mod/No Dampner
1.45 bios
1.424 idle
1.408 load
Mod/Dampner
1.45 bios
1.424 idle
1.424 load
As you can see, Mod + Dampner = no droop at all. It sometimes does move slightly. For example last night when I began Orthos the voltage actually went UP. This may be due to the mod not being done propertly. I'm going to buy a 2B pencil and will reapply today.
New bios 0901 release, anyone tested it, hope it good :D

Is anyone else having issues with onboard sound and headphones? Everything was working perfect whilst listening to music. I just booted up a game and the sound stopped.
Now everytime I stuff around with the jacks the PC freezes. Although I am putting the jacks in the holes it suggests for the headphone profile nothing works.
This is annoying :(

As per this thread (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=165637&page=2), the 0901 was released a few days ago and has the same vdroop issues as the 8 series :(

As far as the Pencil mod... how heavy to shade it, what lead?
I'm asking because I'm considering doing it, but not sure about these parts. Also.. I've seen two different resistors people talk about shading... which one is it?
Guys,
Be carefull with doing Vroop mods.
Vdroop isn't designed to tease the Asus users it there to make up for the lack of a big number of xtra capacitors.
In other words, Vdroop has to there in order to have voltage spiking within specs.
Let me elaborate:
When going from heavy load back to little load or even idle, a voltage spike occures.
Whenever the Vcore droops a bit, the spike will be within specs and do no damage to components like PWM mosfets.
Now doing a Vdroop mod takes away the ability to let the voltage droop under load, causing a voltage spike when going from full load to little or no load that will be out of spec.
The best way to cure this spiking is using caps but since the space around the PWM area on a mobo is limited, there's simply not enough space to place sufficient capacity of caps, that's why Asus came up with this compromis.
Having no droop can cause a mosfet to burn as seen on several occasions here.
Just be aware. ;)
Having said that, i also see there some confusion on Vdrop and vdroop.
Vdrop -- setting for example 1.5V in bios results in 1.45V in windows.
vdroop -- having for example 1.5v idle but dro(o)ps to ~1.45 under load.

I've had a customer contact me about this board not booting to SATA optical. Has anyone encountered the problem, and do you know what the workaround is? If I can't get an answer I'm probably going to end up pulling a board and testing it to see if I can reproduce the problem, so if anyone knows, please fire me a PM :(

I've heard of it.. also had some issues. It ended up being boot priorities and what SATA port I had it in.
Had to put it in one of the black SATA ports and then select some crazy HD 2i2w3525 to boot from.. Hitting boot from CD-Rom didn't work.. guess it looked for IDE on that. Having it in the red SATA port when I had RAID configured made it not boot.

And C0ncrete, thx a lot for your mod/damp results! I'm now considering doing the mod myself! :)

Generaly good overclocker but not the board to reach the absolute limit. I also have boot issues with maxtor 6B200M0 disk and some other random problems. I guess heil ICH9R...
I haven't tried P5KE0806 official bios yet though.

What bios are you on as the 9 series has v droop issues.
I suggest the 0602, vcore dampner and the pencil mod. As you can see from my post before the differance in bios/windows is minimal and the vdroop from idle to load is nil.

The 802 has terrible vdroop issues. Go back to 0602.
I was the same as you in regards to the mod. I had never done one before.
The P5K-E vdroop mod is extremely easy. Simply get a pencil and colour over a small area. Takes about 5 seconds (seriously)
If the board needs to be RMA'd it takes about 5 seconds (serious) to take it off.
c0ncrete, you don't seem to care about a blown mosfet?
Search around this forum, you'll see a few.
I recommend to just set a tad more Vcore in bios than you initially need, it will droop/drop to the minimum voltage you'll need.
With voltage damper enabled the droop on mine isn't that bad at all actually.

Sounds like you haven`t disabled speedstep, or C1E support.
Also enable the vcore dampner in bios.
Or your using wrong versions of cpuz and speedfan.

I had that setup. And the P5KE/Wifi motherboard fried the Crucial RAM. At the same time, my friend's P5K-E/Wifi destroyed his Apacer 6400. Both motherboards have so far been unable to destroy Corsair 5400, 6400, and 8500. Don't expect to overclock your Corsair RAM though - my Corsair 8500 Dominator (huge heatsinks and fans) totally sucks...

Fried the ram in what way?
I presume by overclocking and overvolting the ram?
Does this board clock the same as the P5K premium. I am stuck to a budget and its either the P5K-E the P5K "Basic"
I'm not sure about the differences, but Asus has another P5K model, the "SE", which is about $25 cheaper than the "Basic", which retailers don't seem to be promoting very much? It was on sale here for $98 a couple of weeks back.
I have the P5K Deluxe, which was included in a pre-built system I recently purchased. If I were on a real tight budget I would consider a used P5B, which can usually be picked up on craiglist for $60. NCIX had 2g OCZ gold 6400 for $19 last wk, I bought 2g Ballistix 6400 for $45. Cheaper yet would be a lower speed Athlon X2 which people are dumping for cheap, coupled with a Newegg openbox AM2 board, $30?
My P5B vanilla/E6300 reached the same 3.73GHz as the P5K-D, albeit the P5K needs lower voltage and runs cooler. It could probably go higher, but I am satisfied with a 100% overclock. The sweet spot on my P5B was 450 x 7 (3.15GHz) @ 1.31v, while the P5K is cooler with 500 x 7 (3.5GHz) @ 1.37v.

I found something kind of random..
So I got 400 MHz Bus easily. I had to use 1.4v to the NB. If I dropped NB to 1.25 it would boot but would not initialize the display. I know it made it into windows because the Logitech G15 LCD screen would work normally showing me Processes, RAM Usage, and RivaTuner, but the monitor wouldn't work. Just by changing the NB voltage to 1.4 (after a clear CMOS) it would work just fine.
Anyone run into this issue at all? I was hoping to get 400 on stock voltage, but I'm wondering if this just won't be the case.

Same board, but Wifi doesn't have a heatsink on the upper MOSFETs and employs a heat-pipe solution from the NB to the I/O side heat sink.
I like the regular model.. It runs good FSB without much problem on quads. Seens some fun numbers on duals (500+). It's a great price/performance part.

But what is more lame is how I can get 399 FSBx9 but if I try to go to 400 I get BSOD entering windows? I have DDR-800 Ballistix in Dual 1g kit. Anyone know what i'm doing wrong. I've only played with FSB and Dampener
anyone knows why i can't install sound drivers...
i have installed sp3 rc1, my rig is in signature

Hey thanks a lot. this should be very helpful .
So the motherboard fried the ram and survived? What kind of voltages were you using? If I go with Corsair, I won't spend the extra for Dominator, just the regular CL4 stuff.
The PC with Apacer 6400 would no longer boot. Just a black screen when you press the ON button on the front of the case.
The PC with Crucial RAM would constantly crash with Blue screens of death. Every crash would be a different error.
Both problems resolved instantly using Corsair RAM. I'm not recommending Corsair RAM as I believe my 8500 Dominator sucks. It's just that you asked if anyone had tried the combination of P5K-E/Wifi with Crucial and I felt I should tell you of my experience.
RAM was never over-volted - run at voltage recommended on the packaging.
Both motherboards are operating fine.

I'm really considering purchasing this motherboard for my next build. I believe I will get the P5k-e version since I don't need wifi and like the idea of having the extra heat sink. I'm debating whether or not to get this board of the Abit ip35 pro. I've heard the Abit IP35 Pro will not over clock well Quads well because of the 4 phase power design and I believe the Asus P5k-e has and 8 Phase. This leaves me leaning more towards Asus.
Currently I have a e6600 that is running at 3.6ghz at 1.5v (9x400) on my DFI p965-s. Right now I love my setup but will need more CPU power in the future (45nm penym). I plan on giving the DFI board to my fiancee.
Is the Asus P5k-e better then the P5k-e wifi in terms of overclocking? Does the p5k-e out perform the Abit IP35 Pro? I seem to be having a hard time finding comparable reviews between the two.

Maybe its possible that pee4 just had bad sticks of ram to begin with.

To be honest I have not seen a NON Wifi version of the P5KE listed in shops in Australia. Everyone here just stocks the Wifi version.
I was also tossing up between the Abit and Asus but this board is great on paper. IIRC Abit has vdroop which cannot be countered with a dampner. The P5KE has a dampner which works a treat.

Hi all!
This is my first post, in this legendary forum....
At August, i did buy this Board, Wi-Fi Edition + Q6600 G0+ Watercooled.
3400MHZ, + 1.4Vcore + 1:1FSB day-to-day, 24 hours no issues.
The ram is Mushkin 8500 2G
Problems:
1:1, above 444/445 of FSB.
No matter what, i do have some problems, reaching more than this value, no matter Vcore, Vdim, relaxed timmings, i pumped on it etc.etc..
I did get once 470 FSB, but i did loose 2 cores someone on the way...
Last, week, after reach 4G, and several boots, i did "kill" the Board:rofl:
How?
Before i had Pencil Droop trick.
Several boots, always warning about Vcore error problems.
Than it was asking, for a new Bios....
Finally, when i try 500X8, the Bios, never recory anymore, and i did send it RMA to Belium...
Except that, i like the Board, even it miss some plus:
more than 1.7 Vcore......for instance.
My previous system;:
Abit NFS 2.0, D Manta Ray XT Bios + AMD 2500 M
3 years at @2600MHZ, 24 hours always ON, with some serious abuses from my side:clap:
They don`t build them, like in the old times:rofl:
Waiting RMA........

My P5K-E Wifi/Ap will arrive on Monday after my P5B Deluxe died. Still don't know why, I can't see anything fried on it. No post, no beep even with no cpu installed. Tried various solutions, no luck.
Anyway, I've got one question about this new board.
How is it with the strap? Does it have any strap issues like the P965 chipest? I remember seeing in a review some BIOS screenshots with and option which had something to do with strap, but I'm not sure.

I'm using the latest bios; my overclock does not change from 0602 to the latest.. And how do i know if this is the max my cpu could do? I tried a Pioneer SATA DVR-212 on the ICH9R connectors (configured as RAID in the bios). It won't work with Sony DVD Architect 4.0 (locks up). I attached the Pioneer to a cheap PCI SATA controller. That solved the problem.

I came to P5K-E/Wifi from P5WDH. In my opinion (and price wise), this motherboard is not in the same class. For sure, it overclocks a quad (3.6Ghz) better than P5WDH (3.1GHz). BUT - I've had 2 P5K-E/Wifi of my own, and been involved with 4 other systems based on P5K-E/Wifi, and the board has numerous issues. I just can't find a solid reasonable cost alternative at the moment.
You can expect issues with RAID-0 on this board (I'm using ports 1 and 3 and seems to be ok for the moment). And you can expect the odd BSOD every now and then if you are a power user. The backplate is a pain is the ass - wrong alignment. Long graphics cards cover ICH9R ports 1 and 3. Lack of PS2 mouse sucks. Comes with almost no cables/accessories. JMicron and Norton Ghost hate each other - so you need to disable JMicron which means losing IDE and E-Sata. You get the idea...
But you might as well join the club, because I can't think of a better cost effective alternative for now...

I totally agree with pee3, I can achieve great clocks that seem perfectly stable with this board... but then I'll have a random BSOD. Clocking lower doesn't seem to help. More voltage doesn't seem to help. Monitored temps are all reasonable... just to be sure I'm going to install new heatsinks all around on the board, but considering that I just paid over $80 for heatsinks, that brings the total for my board (w/ aftermarket heatsinks) to over $210.
I'm of the opinion that I shouldn't have to spend top dollar on a board and CPU to achieve high performance, which is, IMO, the whole point of overclocking. To those of the same opinion, I would look for a different board. I just wish I could suggest another board, but I can't. I was also looking at a P35 Abit board before I bought this one, but since I didn't give it a shot, I can't say how they would compare.

Something strange happens to my motherboard. Every time I turn my PC off (but with AC power ON connected) before I sleep, my PC will NOT post every first time (Power Led ON, HDD Led didn’t ON). I have to disconnect the AC power for some while and then connect it again to get it work with the “Overclock failed message”. I tried to set everything to default, especially in Jumper free section. Also tried to set FSB, DRAM timing, Voltages into default (266, 5-5-5-15) manually. Luckily, I solve the problem by disconnecting one of my Maxtor HDD. However, another problem came up. The motherboard didn’t allow me change the FSB (Voltages and dram timing are OK). Even I manually set my FSB to 400, saved it. It still showed 266 FSB in CPU-Z.
Yesterday I just flashed to 0602 BIOS which has a good reputation on the internet. Disconnect the power of all HDDs and DVD writer. Didn’t help, still can’t start at the first time unless disconnecting & reconnecting AC power.
My CPU and MEM work perfectly on my previous ASUS P5B-plus Vista Edition.
What else can I do to narrow down the problem? I got another Coolermaster PSU PCAR 430W, enough for 8800GT? Should I swap it and try?

DFI LP P35 is "better", P5K Premium a little better, but this one rocks, considering the price and ease of OC

Why is the premium better? I've heard it's the same board minus one LAN port or something like that.
I'd go for the DFI but it's too expensive (almost 100EUR more expensive in my country). The new DFI P35 DK is out of stock everywhere here... (it's cheaper then the p5k-e wifi by about 10 euro :)).

If it doesn't error at this clock in half an hour or so i'm dropping the vcore, see how much it really needs. Anything above this speed and i get blue screen after starting Orthos and need to reboot.
Quite a big jump from my previous 3600mhz (8x450) stable at max 1.59v in bios (1.52v after load )
I have some questions though. When i boot up there is a screen showing the Marvel lan controller and my IDE HDD, it's asking me to press any key to continue (goes away by itself after like 5-10secs or so). It's annoying and i dunno how to turn it off. Any idea?
Also, everest doesn't show my RAM vcore anymore. I may be paranoid but i need to check it. Bios doesn't show it also.
What is CPU Voltage reference? I left it at auto.
What is CPU PLL voltage and NB voltage reference? Left both at auto.
Also, the Asus tweaker utility does not work for some reason. Windoze throws an error when i try to start it. Asus AL Suite to be exact.
Here's the screen btw. Awesome mobo! (I'm now at 15mins orthos, still no error :yepp: ).

I too have the Rev.1.02G with BIOS 0702
I noticed I was missing the SpeedStep Enable/Disable option, can someone else confirm this.
ADVANCED
CPU Configuration
Intel(R) SpeedStep(TM) Tech. [ENABLE/DISABLE] <--- Missing this Option
Also what is the default voltage I need to set for my Intel Core2Duo E6750, so that I can verify the Vdroop.
Right now I have it on AUTO
CPU Voltage [Auto]
CPU Voltage Reference [Auto]
CPU Voltage Damper [Enabled]
CPU PLL Voltage [Auto]
In Hardware Monitor I see.
VCORE Voltage [1.240V]
In CPUID I see 1.240V ~ 1.248V
In PC Probe I see 1.24V ~ 1.25V
As a test I set it to 1.250V
CPU Voltage [1.2500V]
CPU Voltage Reference [Auto]
CPU Voltage Damper [Enabled]
CPU PLL Voltage [Auto]
In Hardware Monitor I see
VCORE Voltage [1.144V]
In CPUID I see 1.144V
In PC Probe I see 1.14V
A diffrence of 0.106V!
Is it true that if I want to oveclock I need to put the memory sticks in the black channels?

Anyone installed a heatsink over their mosfets? Like it's on the Deluxe version. Something like a Thermalright HR-09. You guys think that would help or is it not needed?

if you can, get two HR-09 type2 over them, I am personally going too - clocking a quad-core and they get toasty! Of course it helps!

Use black if you have ram with tighter timings.
I have Ballistix in the black and its no worries.
Just confirming I also got the blue box and a Rev 1.02g.
We seem to be having better success with these news boards :)

I'm also going to buy this mobo and considering an overclock on a q6600. Since I'm a n00b on c2d overclock could u guys point out the mosfets in this picture:

I want to cool the mosfets since it seems to be important for a sucessfull overclock :)
AriciU
12-23-2007, 02:55 PM
The first ones are covered by the stock heatsink, the one directly above the CPU. The second mosfets are to the right of the CPU, they are actually surrounded by a rectangle with the letters Heatsink next to it. The Deluxe has the stock heatsink/pipe covering this area as well.
I'd say you're good with only one TR mosfet heatsink covering only those... check thermalright.com for your mobo info... they tell you which to use over there (they have 2 diff mosfet heatsinks).
If I were to remove the stock heatpipe to cool both mosfet banks with thermalright HS's then I would definately add 2 x thermalright chipset HS's as well, for good looks :)

Now my ultrage and disapointing, with Asus:
I did RMA of this board, because i couldn`t reboot, and didn`t have image...
I made 80Km, to send the Board to the store...
2 weeks after i made i call and it was read, and they told me, by phone, that they didn`t sent it to Holand, because she was ok....
Finally, i went to the store.....
So, what was the problem?
We did get off, all my Mushkin memorys, and did use, a cheap, stupid module of memory in the board..
Power it, and.....magic:shocked: she reboot and give image!
On bios, i did increase the voltage of memorys, save it and turn off.
Than i put again my Mushkin, and everthing now is ok...
Moral of this history:
Tks to incompetence of Asus, we all should have a cheap, piece of trash memory, to recory from bad OC, since they use less voltage.......:shakes: :shakes:

CPU/NB Voltage References are for the GTL Ref for the CPU/NB. CPU PLL is the Phase Locked Loop voltage for setting the CPU clock. More PLL will generally raise the FSB wall but PLL is very sensitive and will degrade quickly. Intel max PLL Spec is something like 1.6v.
If you figure out how to show all the other temps let me know, my P5K-E shows just the basics.

I was in your same shoes two days ago and i've picked this. Don't regret it one bit. Dunno how the Abit is but the voltage options on this board are killer!
Only bad thing is that you can't monitor your nb / sb and dram voltage for some reason (i can't anyway). Emailed Asus about that.

Everything is set to AUTO
SpeedStep is working, changing my multi to 6 when idle.
Which temp do I trust to be accurate, I'm leaning towards CoreTemp's and Everest readings.
Anyone knows why Intel Thermal Analysis Tool is reporting my temp lower than Everest and Core Temp, does it have to do with some kind of delta calculation?

ok, it MAY help, so ,if you are willing , could you post your BIOS settings and board revision?
I dont know what is wrong, but I can do 3600 (400x9) even at 1,34V, a couple of Prime95 rounds complete, without any errors, but out of nowhere, the system restarts. Another strange thing to note is, that if I put more than 1.6V PLL and 1,3 FSB voltage, it restarts even on Windows load, completely unstable ... really strange. More than 1,45V ... also unstable, even on lower clocks, just restarts ...
Tryed all sorts of BIOSes and voltage options, nothin, just the same restart

And BTW, could you post your settings for the 3,6GHz?
Hi Aerosupra...i used asus update but it did not show what file it was...so i thought it would be better to save in EZ flash so it would be a ROM file...i have rar'ed it and just sent...good luck m8.:)
Edit: As to o/c settings ....i am using 9x400 with 1.45vcore...mem 5-5-5-18...running @960mhz@2.0v and that's it...the rest are left on auto.

Or some kind of image and backup?
If so, maybe should, after install, load defaults, and make a new image/copy, no?

Here is my most recent prime run and highest attempt on my q6600 for 24/7 stable. Bios settings are pretty much default. All I changed was fsb .Multi, cpu voltage and cpu ,pcie spread spectrum to disabled. There really isnt a need for upping the other voltages. My board is a 1.01 btw. If you want a screen of bios just let me know.

a hope my other X38 board arrives soon, so can can put that damn quad under the scope - really weird, that it becomes unstable at 1,4V and higher no matter what frequency, I still blame the board ...

LOL ya good thing I have a 2 gb flash drive. :) What ever you do dont go near the 0901 bios. What a nightmare that was. I couldnt flash back no matter what I did until I got a link on here for a asus update that worked and boy was I freaked to have to flash in windows.

the quad is a L731 G0 Q6600 , it is a nightmare, a spent two days tryin all bioses, voltage, pencil mod, extreme pwm cooling ... nothin, that son of a silicon aint stable. Really strange, when I set voltages more than 1,4 V (real) cpu, or 1,6V PLL or 1,4 FSB or 1,55V Vnb it locks up and reboots even during Win bootup, with the E6600 I can rocket those voltage to 1,55Vcpu, 1,8Vpll, 1,5Vfsb, 1,7Vnb without a problem! its a nightmare for me. Another thing a have noticed is that the cpu had marks after a heatsink installation, scrathes on the surface - does it happen with a brand new, sealed cpu? I had a uncomfortly feeling about it, but I dont know what to think of it, since it had a " Intel factory sealed " sticker and the box was unopened ...

Hey,
I got the P5K-E/WiFi last week and installed it. Cooling mosfets with thermalright Hr-09 type 2 (pics to follow)(hardmounted). Cooling NB/SB with thermaltake extreme spirit II heatsinks. Cooling E6600 with water. 850watt antec TPQ PSU, 2gb Pc2-6400 corsair xms2 (5-5-5-15-2T, 2.10volts)
I installed bios 0901 before finding out about the vdroop. I can not return to 0602, 0603, or anything else. I have tried EZ flash in the bios, and Asus update utility in windows Vista 32bit. Update utility says "Bios image can't use in this motherboard. The EEPROM type incompatible." EZ Falsh says the bios is older than the 0901 bios, which is obviously correct.
Can some one suggest another method of downgrading bios to 0602?
I can not understand this method.

in asus update go to options and then check the box before bios downgradable
Aerou
12-28-2007, 03:03 PM
for me the downgrade option didnt work for 0901, so I did this:
prepare desired bios and rename to P5KE.ROM and put it on a FDD/CD/DVD/pendrive
start updating the 0901 with 0901 using EZ flash
during the process restart/shutoff
during next restart, the Crashfree feature starts looking for a medium with the P5KE.ROM file - insert the media
let flash complete - and there U have it - never use 0901 again ;)
... remember, its always at your own risk!
Other BIOSes (for example 0806 into 0602) can be easily downgraded through Asus UPDATE setting the 'Downgradeable" option in settings

Thanks, except bios can not be downgraded through Asus update program on my motherbaord. I have checked the 'downgradable' option in the program and started receiving the message, "Bios image can't use in this motherboard. The EEPROM type incompatible." Thanks fellas, I see that 0602 is much easier to overclock then 0901 and am going to give 0603 a try now. I can easily hit 4.0 on my e6600, with nothing but Vcore voltage changes. However, the temps are to high for 24/7 so I will be runnning 3.6.
I have encountered a few issues. I can not set memory timing to 1T. I does not matter what I do with other settings. This was not a problem with my 680i board.
Everest benchmark shows a large drop in memory read (20%) and increase in memory latency times (70.8ns vs. 57ns). And the worst part is that I am overclocking the memory and cpu more than I was when I got higher scores! Memory write scores show 10% increase and memory copy scores are nearly identical.
Last issue, my video card is running slow. 3dmark06 is running at 30FPS instead of 90FPS in the first test. I am about to re-install the drivers and see what happens. Is there a setting in bios that I have disabled that affects GPU performance?
spider_d
12-29-2007, 08:28 AM
Update: flashed bios to 0603 and now have GPU at normal level of performance. It might be a driver conflict with older BIOS or a hardware issue because the new 8800GT support PCIE2.0. I do not know, but am glad that it is working now.
Time to overclock
spider_d
12-29-2007, 09:07 AM
Well, here is the problem. My GPU starts running slow when I overclock past 3200MHz. At 3600 my 8800GT is running at 30FPS. At 3200 my GPU is running at 80FPS.
The only changes that I have made between the two CPU clocks are FSB and Vcore, so somehow one of these settings is slowing GPU performance.
Anyone seen this before? Any solutions?

I don't think you can set it at 16x anywhere. You can check the speed it's running on using CPU-Z, under the Mainboard section.

12-29-2007, 10:45 AM
Depending on your video card determains where to set pci-e speed. I have a 3870 and I need to run it at 110 + to get the best overclocks. Its very common. Also if you exceed 120 your gonna drop your os flat on its face. So keep it at 115 max imo.

I tryed flashing back up to 0901, but have the same results. Low FPS in game and 3dmark. I checked PCIE setting between 100 -120 without change and tried your settings Crazykooter.
I just checked CPU-Z and found in the mainboard tab that the link width is x1and max supported is x16. I am going to set bios to stock and check to see if these settings change.
Thanks for the help so far. I will mention that the pencil mod has me overvolting by 0.03 in bios 0603 and undervolting by 0.06 in 0901 bios. So, I like the 0603 bios because I can set my Vcore to 1.45 and reach 3.6 stable with a PCprobe reading of 1.47, no vdroop under load.

I think that I have found the answer. Here it is;
7. If you are experiencing a jerky desktop, slow graphics performance, low framerates etc or any other kind of graphical corruption (this is mainly for Asus boards), load up CPU-Z and in the section that tells you about your motherboard, look at the bottom where it says something like PCI-E Link Width, it may have changed itself to 1x instead of 16x (this happened to me yesterday), so to fix it, go into the bios and cheange the PCI-E frequency from AUTO to 110 (you can try any value up to 110), save and exit, boot into windows and check with CPU-Z that the PCI-E Link Width is now set to 16x. If it is still at 1x, repeat what you just did, but up the PCI-E frequency another notch, check with CPU-Z and if it is back to 16x, go back to the bios and change it back to auto, and hopefully, it should be fine

I want to buy a e8400(45nm cpu) but i now have bios 0603. 0703 was already installed but it had a huge vdrop.
Now everything is allright, but i want to sell my e6600 tomorrow. So from which bios can i run e8400? So i can update to that bios, otherwise i can't start my computer if i got the e8400.
So since which bios is 45nm cpu's (specially e8400) supported?
If i look at the supported CPU list I see that the Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is supported since 0903. That's a 45nm cpu, right? But is this for ALL the 45nm cpu's?
