Hi,

Getting ready to do a new computer rebuild. Been about 3 years so trying to catch back up with all the hardware and software issues. I really want Vista 64 on this machine and feel most of my applications/needs for the computer will be fine except for video editing. The video editing forums really indicate true incompatibility with the 64 bit OS. So I thought I would create a dual boot configuration. I have two older 36 GB Raptors that I wanted to setup under Raid 0 as the OS/system drive. However, would it make better since to not set them up as Raid and use one raptor for each OS instead? Also, which OS would you install first? Seems like to me Vista should be installed first after the build since that will be my main OS.

Thanks in advance,

Usually for dual boot you install the older versions first, the the newer versions will know how to deal with it.

RAID0 shouldn't be a problem, you'd just have to partition it for the dual boot.

Thanks for the input, but I thought you only partition a drive when you want to make additional drives out of a single drive. So do you mean partition the two raptors setup in Raid 0? However, if I keep them in a non-raid array, then I could put an OS on each and that would not require a partition. Would one of these solutions work better than the other? Sorry for the dumb questions, I guess I'm confused.

the performance benefits of RAID0 will be felt in BOTH os', where as if you install an OS on each drive, you won't get any of the RAID benefits

Okay, I see your point. Set them up in Raid 0, then partition them back into separate drives and put one OS on each.

Thanks!

@Panzer948

Which RAID driver(s) are offered with your mobo? There has been problems with Intel Matrix Storage RAID driver and Vista since day one and I have not been able to find any confirmation that this has been fixed yet. I found this article last night. Some of the work arounds work for some people some don't.
