View Full Version : Phase on x38/x48 NB?

Has anyone checked or considered the impact of phase on an x38 NB yet? It has an IHS so the idea seems, at least mechanically, like a possibility.

one person did it on here and said they where in the 630s fsb with it on the x38 and one unit on the cpu.

There are always gains to be made by chilling down components, just need to judge if it's worth the expense. I myself have a tiny single-stage that I'll be using on my incoming P35 to see if it'll help crack some records but for daily applications or even quick dice/single-stage benching it probably isn't worth it, a 40mm fan would be a better option.

So there is no Cold bug on it?

Question is more if they gained somthing from it :D

How boring! Please ban him to the Air Cooled section ;)

But seriously: I think heīs right. Not EVERYTHING has to be cooled by phase-change. Even if you can push up the FSB more under phase-change, I donīt think it is worth the effort. As far as I know all the records have been made by LN CPU cooling and a nice fan on the NB.

Honestly, if you are willing to go that far, might as well submerse whoe thing and cool all components of it till... say about -5c... caps don't like getting TOO cold.
(CPU & GPU already phased...)

Why don't you just make a simple alu pot (pipe with endcap) and throw dry ice in it?

maybe 15- 40fsb. youngpro has a unit with cpu/nb heads. I think he might start using it again more now his QX9650 has arrived.

put in a fridge? That could work, not toooo cold

but do we even know if the x38/48 have a cold bug or not? They might not like to go too far below zero

Mines been okay, When i pulled stock cooling the IHS came off and everything was fine, no deaths or anything.

I cover the SMD's with some insualtion and refitted the ihs on but not stuck down.

I was bord was reason i fitted the SS to the NB. CPU was downfall at time

I mounted an old vapoSE on the NB of my maximus formula. gave me a 10mhz fsb boost, but the nb was only -5*C because of bad mounting. Colder might gain some more.

I dunno, -5c is really cold compared to the stock temps northbridges usually are at, I don't think you'd gain all that much more if you only gained 10 fsb, but good luck nonetheless

How about turning the old vapose into a chiller, as the maximus does have a waterblock, you could use that to cool the cpu, nb and gfx if you really wanted to

Insulating a chilled loop is a pain and having to insulate that stock maximus waterblock looks like a nightmare.

yeah I forgot about insulating all those lines, though it would definitely add 24/7 low temps for more ocing

The stock NB is about as good as blowing out ya nose with it blocked up. It's really tight in there. I t also added 1psi to my loop presure

It shouldnt be worth putting more than water on the chipset, for any reason. Its been said and proven that its not the board that decides FSB, but the chip.

The best thing to do is just take that money into finding a chip with better FSB, but if you have a unit laying around, I cant see the harm :D

I agree that cpu does make the bigger difference, but the motherboard can hold back the cpu and I think that's what the purpose of phasing it would be

I think I'll hook up my waterchiller to my Maximus Formula SE. I only ever let it pull down to around freezing at most, so I can get away without using any insulation.

Uhmmm... there is something called... "dew" point. It's not necessarily freezing point of water.

yes yes I know that. ;)

My bet is on the coldbug. Tried phase on P965, couldnt run 470+ at 1066MHz CPU:FSB strap. Aircoold with 1.8V-1.9V i could run 500MHz+ at same strap. So cold bug definitely on P965. I have heard it is the same with P35, so it is quite obvious that X38 as the P35's derivate of somekind suffers the same.

While using phase on my GB-P35 board the NB gets pretty cold, at least the heatsink is cold. It seems like the cold from the cpu transfers trough the board to all the closest parts. Well, the heat transfers.

I benched once on a p5b dlx with DI on the NB and we managed to get sligtly higher clocks AFAIK, the most important thing we archived by using DI on NB was stability vs air on NB while overclocking with DI and LN2.

Hmmm has anyone displayed results with the x38 super cooled because I have posting issues when my x38 is really cold on a cold morning and im just water cooling my x38 and SS cooling my cpu...

Im not saying that it might not be something else but on those cold days it does take a bit of heating up before it will successfully boot with out a triple beep...

We used pelets. De dident bench at -70 or anything.

That is offtopic m8.
But it indicates that you are feeding to low Vcore.
