Just wondering if this setup would even be possible - I've recently acquired a server rig, and I'm thinking it would make a decent gaming rig with a few changes, but I dunno much about server boards, so I wanted to know if any of this would actually work. The final build would be as such:

Case: Cooler Master Stacker RC-832 - Nice, spacious case with good airflow.
Fans: Delta AFB1224VH x 6 @ 105 CFM each
Hard Drive: Seagate Cheetah 15k.5 ST3300655LW- 15k rpm, 300GB
Heatsink: Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme - One of the Delta's tacked on to wick heat.
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa - Nice, responsive gaming keyboard.
Motherboard: Asus P5MT-S - Server board with SCSI.
Mouse: Razer Lachesis - Nice, responsive gaming mouse,
Operating System: Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition - Will games even boot into this, and/or will the board work with a "normal" version of Windows?
Optical Drive: Lite-On LH-20A1P - Reliable, fast drive.
Power Supply: Silverstone DA750 - Plenty of power, single rail, modular, just enough connectors.
Processor: Pentium 4 SL7Z4 - Relatively fast, even if it is only single core...the board says it can handle dual cores, but will any other processors work on this board, with the server chipsets and all?
RAM: GSkill DDR2-667 2 x 1GB F2-5400CL3D-2GBGA - Fast RAM...stock is 3-4-3-8...overclocks well.
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 70SB073A00000 - The board has one PCI-E x16, some PCI-X (what are those used for?), and a "PCI 33MHz/32 bits/5V "...is this standard PCI, or what?
Speakers: Klipsch 2.1 GMX A - No integrated audio on the board, so without a sound card, no speakers...
Thermal Compound: Arctic Cooling MX-2 - Standard, of course.
Video Card: XFX 8800 Ultra PV-T80U-SHF9 - I'm worried, because the board says "A PCI Express x16 graphics card inserted to the PCI Express x16 slot may run only at x1 speed".
Video Card Fan: Zalman VF1000 LED - Added to overclock the video card further.
Video Card Heatsink: Zalman ZM-RHS88 - With these two mods to the video card, I've seen overclocks to 675 clock/1667 shader/2300 memory.

So that's the basic rundown. I'm interested in hearing what you guys think.

Thanks in advance!

Wow, that's a pretty kickass 'server'.. That chipset doesn't even support Core 2 though. Pentium D maybe, but not Core 2. Where did you find it? Seems more like a gaming rig that just happens to have a server motherboard.

that wont be to good its for a slow old cpu

If you truly want the "server" rig -> gaming rig experience, get a SkullTrail mobo and some cheaper Harpertown Xeons.

BTW, SkullTrail won't be available until early Q1 08.

For the money you are spending might as well get a new board and cpu...

No point in having an 8800ultra with a P4

jmmtn4aj: It's not how the server came to me, it's what I had in mind for it between what it came with and what I had around. :) Clarify for me, though, because you're on the edge of answering one of my questions - will the funky server chipsets not support any GOOD dual-cores? 'Cause the board says it will do dual, I just wasn't sure which ones with the odd chipsets.

Bigchrome: I'm not spending any money - that's the point, it's what was in the server and what I have around. :) And yeah, I know that particular P4 will bottleneck the Ultra but, as I said, I'm not sure what good dual-cores the thing could run, so I just listed the CPU that came with the server

it will only do teh p4 8xx and 9xx non EE so thats going to be really slow

Th board supports the Pentium D's...Netburst dual cores.
It doesn't look like it has a PCI-e X16 slot for a vid card from what I was able to find so it isn't going to be good for gaming.
OK board for a ftp server or like and probably pretty dependable but not for what you want at all.
Sell it off and get a gaming board.

I think I'll take the advice most have given me and sell off excess parts and build the following:

Case: Cooler Master Stacker RC-832
Fans: Delta AFB1224VH x 5
Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD
Heatsink: Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Formula
Mouse: Razer Lachesis
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Optical Drive: Lite-On LH-20A1P
Power Supply: Silverstone Decathalon DA750
Processor: Intel Q6600 G0 HH80562PH0568M
RAM: GSkill DDR2-1066 2 x 1GB F2-8500PHU2-2GBHZ - 4-4-4-5
Sound Card: Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 70SB073A00000
Speakers: Klipsch GMX A 2.1
Thermal Compound: Arctic Cooling MX-2
Video Card: XFX 8800 Ultra PV-T80U-SHF9
Video Card Fan: Zalman VF1000 LED
Video Card Heatsink: Zalman ZM-RHS88

This gives me some upgrade paths for the future, too. I've got room for four more fans (I'll have to grab a 5.25" fan controller, but that's no biggie). I've been meaning to ask - are the newer games (Crysis and the like...the one's marked "Games for Windows") Vista only (or are they *going* to be Vista only)? Just wondering, 'cause I really DON'T like Vista, and Longhorn is delayed 'til like 2012... I've also got support for 1600fsb, and 45nm. Whee! :D
