View Full Version : LOL, 3850 Crossfire

Since my 3870 were killed I needed to get a quick hold over for the next set (maybe dual 3870x2's?) so for :banana::banana::banana:s and giggles, I grabbed two 3850's, just to see how they would be and then maybe later sell them off in a couple HTPC rigs for clients. Perfect cards for them, with the HDMI and 5.1 onboard sound and single slot cooling they save alot of space.
Anyway, I overclocked them both to 700/980 just to see how well they scaled in Crossfire (single card score 11.5k at the same clocks). Well, they gave me a laugh because this is what I got in 06 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=3889170
I had to laugh, since it's only 1k short of my 3870's at 855/1250 with the cpu at the same clocks.
I know they aren't the greatest cards, but for anyone out there looking for a card to put in an HTPC/gaming rig, these things are pretty good value.

Odd combo! Strange how they are barely slower in 06... If you had even set the 3870s to the same clocks it would have dropped 1k more thna likely??how about games though?

Glad I read this post! I am using the P5K-DLX motherboard, so with that said, you and I would be Cross-Firing @ 16x X 4x. Is that 4x speed crippling the 2nd card?

It is an odd combo, but it was more out of curiosity (and availability) then anything else. I play a ton of COD4 and Crysis and they both run well at 1680x1050, albeit the Crysis settings are all Medium and COD4 are all jacked up.

Doesn't hurt performance at all. They aren't producing enough bandwidth to hit the ceiling at 16x anyway.

Do you think the 256MB of ram would be limiting the cards?

At high resolutions with AA&AF applied yes.

crossfire can pool memory it dosnt need all textures to be on both cards like sli so its not that big of a deal on xfire but 512mb isnt very much

Very good result!
These cards are really good value for cheap CF!! :)
I'm trying to put my CF in use but HL2: EP2 1680x1050 8xAA 16xAF is not enough to bring it below 60FPS :p: !
Crysis is another matter because for now no CF is working :shakes:

When my HD3870's were alive those settings in HL2:E2 never brought the frames below 100 :P
These cards run that game in the 100's with 0XAA and 8XAF. AA is just not an option with 256mb.
In Crysis, both cards have to be working, I can't see how one would pull 40-50 fps @ all medium 1680x1050. Forced DX9 I get 60-70 fps.

It's light hearted and silly. You must be a Tool fan, not many people pick up on the name.

yeah i'm a long time MJK fan. i really like some of the songs on his new cd, surprisingly. it definately grew on me. they released on ep with a couple really good remixes of rev. 22:20 (revalation is the best IMO) and 2 other tracks, if you didn't know. the radio on the puscifer website is awesome.

I'm starting to have serious system stability issues. Games are crashing left, right and center. :(
