View Full Version : Two newbie questions: Additives and FuZion Bowing

I'm still doing some research for my first water cooling loop, and I have a couple of questions.

I probably should say from the start that I live in Australia, so links to overseas stores aren't too much use to me. Links to Aussie stores, or advice as to what kind of stores might stock the products is very useful.

Question 1: What's the best additives for my loop, to stop stuff growing, and also to make it purdy colours? There aren't any mixed metals in the loop that I know of (FuZion CPU block, MCW60 GPU block and a MCR320 QP rad), so I shouldn't need a corrosion inhibitor, just some kind of biocide. What's the best option for this? Should I be looking at any particular brand, or go to a pet/aquarium store and ask about biocides/algal killers? Or would something such as Iodine work? If so, what sort of concentration should I be looking at using?
For a coolant dye, any particular brand I should look for or avoid? I'm thinking UV reactive, either green or red (hmm, which would look better, considering a black case (including insides) and blue LED fans?). I know www.flabbergast.com.au has D-Tek UV reactive dyes, which should do the trick, unless there is something about them I should stay away from?
Or would an all-in-one additive such as Swiftech HydrX do the trick?

Question 2: I've heard a lot of people talk about bowing a FuZion CPU block, but nothing about how it's done, and numerical results as to how much better it performs. Can anyone give me an idea (with pics, if possible) as to what the process is to creating a bowed FuZion CPU block?

Cheers

I use Swiftech Hydrx, and it turns your water green. It's an all-in-one, but you do have to mix it with distilled water.

To bow your Fuzion, I believe you take apart your Fuzion and between the base and whatever is placed on top, you place a washer. Then when you reassemble your Fuzion, the washer will warp the base of the Fuzion. The middle of the base will be pushed out.

+20 for Swiftech hydrx. Not to mention it's probably the cheapest additive. The directions on the side of the bottle tell you how much distilled water to add in.

I hanen't bowed FuZion CPU block yet.

I would like more info on it too, and I wonder if there is some advice on washer selection.

So I need an O-Ring with a roughly 1/2" diameter, that is about 3mm thick, yes? I'm assuming most hardware stores would stock something like that in their plumbing section, since I don't really want to buy an EK barb just to get the o-ring off it :P

Im still 50/50 on bowing my FuZion CPU block.

I lapped my Q6600, and have the quad nozzle and small rubber gasket in there.

hmmm..... This won't make it more prone to leak would it?

The Fuzion has a small degree of bow as sold.
Most people fitting the nozzle kits aren't using a thicker spacer to bow it further.
As is with the nozzle it out performs a bowed gtx. There's not much need to bow it further, imho.

Sounds good.

I'm going to fly mine as is then.

Looks fairly simple. What is the thickness of that washer?

Is there any point to bowing the FuZion if you're also installing nozzles? Or does the nozzle kit also induce a bow into the block?

Most ppl that use the nozzles don't bother to bow. The ones that do are looking for absolutely ever last .01ºC they can get.
