View Full Version : Firefox 3.0 is better at handling memory then 2.0.0.9

Does Firefox 3.0 beta 1 do a better job of handling memory than earlier versions? In a test put Firefox 3.0 beta up against Firefox 2.0.0.9 in a series of tests.

Before I go any further, a few disclaimers and notes. First off, I’ve carried out this test on a single system running Windows Vista Home Premium on which Firefox had not been previously installed. The system has 2GB of RAM. Both Firefox 2.0.0.9 and Firefox 3.0 b 1 were installed fresh using a standard install. For each test I visited the same web pages and did my best to make the browsing the same on both versions.

I'm using it right now, it's very snappy but nowhere near the speed of Opera 9.5.

For Windows?
I am always seeking a web browser faster at loading and display page content.

Yes, for windows. Opera can get to be a little bit of a memory hog when you have ALOT of windows open, but it has been tested time and time again to be the fastest Windows based browser out there.

They need to start bothering more about an x64 version....

And someone needs to make an x64 version of flash. Whats the point of having a 64-bit OS with hardly any bloody app support? :(

I have 2GB of fast memory, and when I web browse, it is usually followed by just iTunes and Pidgin, nothing else.

I am typing this in Opera now.
Mouse gestures is cool.
I think things do load faster.

Thanks everyone for informing me on a faster web browser!

Firefox 2.0.0.9 has crashed on my a few times the past week, so i went back to 2.0.0.8 which has been plenty stable. memory usuage is about 70mb tops normally for my browsing, on linux its the same aswell, give or take. I use fox on win, and opera or iceweasel, which is a fork of firefox. Its pretty nice

will try out this new beta

hmm I'm using ff2 right now. Most always have at least 10 ff windows open, each with maybe 10-15 tabs. ff2 is using about 900MB of ram at the moment. even with 2gb, I'm constantly paging. Might take a step up to 4gb soon (dreaded x64 here I come :(). This is definitely good news for me!

What's really nice is IE lost for the new beta!! Free software FTW!!

It would be nice to use the new beta but all my extensions and themes wouldn't work.:(
Going to wait for the official release...by then everything should work with the browser...atleast i hope so.

Fastest isn't worth anything if it can't handle 10+ tabs..

Opera is a far more efficient browser than ff. Uses about 1/5th the memory ff uses. It is also much faster. I however prefer ff because of it's extended functionality.

DangeR!

Yeah, I hope its more efficient, FireFox is a memmory whore and isn't all that efficient with processor time either. I stopped using it to watch streaming video and stuff because its keeps freezing up. And no matter what you do it seems to use more and more memmmory and has to be restarted every so often unless you want it taking up 400 MB of memmory.
