According to anandtech, there was something strange with the power of QX9770 and asus P5E3
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3154
At idle this thing is a beast, with the system consuming over 200W while the QX9650 pulled just over 150. It's almost as if EIST isn't functioning properly on the chip (CPU-Z confirmed that it was however).
but there is an update:
"Updated: We're working with Intel on the source of the thermal problems we mentioned in this review, it looks like the culprit was our ASUS P5E3 Deluxe motherboard. ASUS has since released an updated BIOS intended to address the power consumption issues we faced, you can read more about it here while we continue with our testing."

wow, I didn't even know about the qx9770. Is it going to be 3.33ghz?

say it aint so... are they giving it a half multiplier?

400*8
But even a half multi wouldnt do any damage.

Just read the lil' review, this chip works at a 1600 MHz. FSB, so you only need a multiplier of 8x. (The most weird thing about this chip being send out for reviews is the fact there there are no chipsets that officially support that FSB)

it's something to do with the 1600 FSB I think  :)
U all beat me :(
I should type quicker lol

i wish intel's had half multi's, my friends amd fx60 has half multis and its nice, but his chip is still a huge POS, 2.6GHz stock, wont even clock to 2.8
If my QX6700 had half multis i would be happier with it :)

oooh, didn't know they were already shifting to 1600 fsb...

It's just the extremes, no?
All of the "normal person" Penryns are going to be 1333 afaik.

Starting to phase it in with extreme editions and no doubt, the second lineup of Penryns will have 1600FSB across the range.

Not exactly as anandtech review before an X48 board:

Some servers are 1600 too.

Only X48 officially supports 1600FSB by Intel's stringent specifications, but some of the X38 boards are 'unofficially' offering 1333/1600FSB support, but this is not sanctioned by Intel, only the manufacturer.

You could underclock a qx9770, if you want :D

Ram needs to play more catch up again. It's stupid how we can't run 1:1 fsb anymore

why do half multi's matter?

Notice FSB = 1600 on the specifications...
my chip fires up at 1600FSB as it should, no OC needed for default FSB/speed from bios reset.

why do half multi's matter?
As the FSB increases, it allows for Intel to still keep the same "rough" clockspeed gaps with their products but also has the small side effect of potentially decreasing the max overclock.
While half multipliers also hurt overclocks it sometimes can be helpful to overclockers.

You make no sense. For Intel, half multis can only be good/neutral. There is no bad of it besides higher FSB/lower multi CPUs.

why do half multi's matter?
They dont as such. However with the faster and faster FSB. The half multi is needed to better segment the CPUs. Else without and 1600FSB, each CPU step would be 400Mhz apart.

I have think about that. I believe first quad penryn should be 9300, the others are Q9x50 or QX9x50 and finally a QX9770
(As E6600 or E6650 differncies)
Doesn't mean 50 = 1333MHz
70 = 1600 MHz
And finally 9300 could be a 1066 quad?
Or is there an other meaning of the '00' '50' '70' ?
Shintai

9300 is just 6MB cache but still 1333FSB.
