Hey you cooling nut cases!
I have been given a brand new Foxconn Quantum MARS P35 motherboard to give out to anyone. (No pic let’s cut pimping to a minimal) This contest is pretty straightforward!

A Build Log plus finished project Contest!
- Must be Phase Change :P
- Must be complete with Pictures – No bigger than 640pixels width

Reply this thread with Work log to enter!

Keep all your work pictures and updates within 4 posts, just keep editing to add in. I’d propose you post one post and then reserve 3 spaces below it immediately to keep your work log in a single file.

Single stage and Cascades are equally welcomed, of course the nature of each will be evaluated on equal grounds – ie won’t compare performance of single to a Cascade.

You will be judged on Ease to understand of detailed work log, Innovation, aesthetics, and Performance! The shady area will of course be performance so try to convince us of it's performance the best way you can, benched on a CPU/GPU, etc...

Contest starts now, winner announced on Christmas Day!

Woot sounds good, love it, does it have to be a NEW worklog? That would make it a bit more interesting I think...

Yes it would be, that will make things fairer I think :)

Well why I wanted to limit was to make it easier to read and clear and precise, that was my thinking... I was thinking that spanning 4 posts should be fine for a build, and users just edit their own posts to put in updates...
Is 4 too little?
I think anyone should be free to enter, unless Runny says no :D

Oh, just realized something... we can't even legitimately compare CPU temperature on SS on most situation -_-;
Basically, it has been a while since last time I saw any.... negative temperature reading from software even on SS with newer Intel CPU in general... comparing performance is going to be headache.

yes thats why i say perf is just one factor and contestant can try to convince us in any creative way... its too grey and debating on this will end up with what runny predicted :D

Post as many units as you like and most definately post your worklog. Worklogs are a big percentage of the overall ratings.

Joint entries are no problem, but Lardy only has one mobo.

thanks Lardy for a cool contest. Happy Thankgiving

Yes, you can, as there is also no way of monitoring how many people are actually building a rig. Of course it is evaluated as a single project. Now where's that first fresh work log.. :)

*** ULTRAMARINE CASCADE BY PIOTRES ***

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/logo.gif

It's mine worklog, about mine latest build- still being builded cascade . It's ..not black :D . I have convinced mine very kind client to resign from very boring for me black color ;) . He choosed blue :) . About hue of this blue - it's mine own choose, orginal name of powder paint is "ultramarine blau" :D .

Tech of that cascade is bit ordinary and boring again ;) - just two rotaries, plate HX,4 REFCO gauges, plate HX, Danfoss TXV and R507/R1150  .

Specs :

compressors: TECO KETC176 on 1st stage (10755 BTU), LG 164PAB on 2nd stage (10000 BTU)
evap: steeper
XV: Danfoss TS2 / captube 0.9 mm
HX: plate HX , 12 plates
condenser: 3.0 Kw, alu-cu, cooled by 300mm/230V fan
refrigerants : R507/R1150
oilseparator : Shine Year automatic
safety : Danfoss KP5 cut-off, around 1.5 litre expansion tank
case : metal case, 60 x 45 x 40 cm, "ultramarine blau" powder coating
others: 4*REFCO panel gauges, ANACONDA shocks absorber on 1st stage's suction line,Dixell XR20CX controller (turn on 2nd stage automatically when 1st stage is enought cold), homemade receiver before Danfoss TS2, 4* NIDEC 120mm fans on the back wall of case.

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/1.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/2.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/3.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/4.jpg

Condensor is bit modded, becasue even in quite big, 40 cm tall case is too small space to mount huge condensor and panel gauges without colision ;) .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/5.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/6.jpg

First I don't have POE oil to prefill oilseparator . So I had brazed what I could, and then pour oil and made 3 last connections . ;)

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/7.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/8.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/9.jpg

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/10.jpg

Electrics already done ;-) .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/11.jpg

It's ...1st stage in 6*C ambient. Dixell work till sth like -59*C only, so it's out of it's rate :D .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/12.jpg

Some frost with temporary insulation ;) .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/13.jpg

First 2nd stage run at 6*C ambient :) .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/14.jpg

After first test I had got problems with 2nd stage ..low side was sth like +0.5 bara, hiside 4-5 bara  (OMG what low) and cascade can hold 225W even with -80*C  . So I've changed 2nd stage compressor for LG (at begining at this place had been Toshiba), 2nd stage captube, driers, and ...finally oilseprator . Yes, problem was with oilseparator, which had been releasing some hot gas from discharge line directly to suction side, all the time :( . So broken float :shakes: . After changing oilsep for seconds pcs cascade works ...like You can see lower ;) .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/15.jpg

I must regulate TXV superheat screw a bit, becasue 2nd stage still fell lower than -60*C  and Dixi had just turned mine 2nd stage down :( (when it runs with "P1" failure for longer time) .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/16.jpg

Now "better :D " .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/17.jpg

Under 225W load in 6*C ambient = -101*C :yepp: .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/18.jpg

2nd stage under load .

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/19.jpg

Leak testing with mine favourite "Amasan" leak finder spray :D . Any leaks founded :) .

Now I'll make insulation ...today or at friday :) .

I will finish this unit till sunday . Sunday is pick-up day :D .

To be continued ....

With Kindest Regards
Peter

Lets see if i this works out nicely. It's been a while since i've built a singlestage

I went to the garage and collected some parts to start with...

I'll make a simple single stage unit using the following parts:

-ACC GP16FB compressor (16cm³ displacement)
-decent condenser, no pics now as it arrives not until next week (pic will follow)
-some evap that i found in the garage. It fits into the vapo mount so i'll try if its ok.
-CPEV (never used one before :D)
-refrigerant: R402a

The unit will be mounted on a simple aluminium sheet. I've not planned a case for now.

All parts except the condenser:

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/parts.jpg

Today I prepared and brazed the evaporator. Its an simple stepper design so nothing special. I modified it to increase the surface area a bit.

And always remember, while using a bench drill you should wear your safety glasses. :D

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/jan.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/evap.jpg

The cooker helps warming it up. At least a bit.

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/evap1.jpg

Brazed and cooling down. Now i've to clean it and lap the bottom.

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/evap2.jpg

Today I got some work done. I assembled the suctionline and highside of the unit. Pics below:

First I lapped the evaporator. As my lathe is disassembled right now I did it manually :(
Start with rough paper and as you progress use finer paper until you get a flat evaporator bottom without grooves.

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/lapping.jpg

When I finished this I assembled the evaporator with the suction line.

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/suction1.jpg

Next I added the feed line for the CPEV

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/suction2.jpg

Now that the evaporator, suctionline and feedline were assembled I insulated it and put the evap into the Vapo mounting kit

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/suction3.jpg

This is the condenser I was waiting for:

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/condenser1.jpg

I did cut in M4 threads for easy fan mounting:

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/condenser2.jpg

With mounted fan it looks like this:

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/condenser3.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/condenser4.jpg

Now I mounted the compressor on the baseplate

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/mount1.jpg

next comes the condenser

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/mount2.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/mount3.jpg

Starting with the discharge line. I forgot a access valve, I'll add it later on when I finish the cooler.

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/hs1.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/hs2.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/hs3.jpg

Added CPEV and filterdryer

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/valve1.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/valve2.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/valve3.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/valve4.jpg

As I ran out of brazing rods the last thing I did was adding the suction line and some insulation:

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/suction4.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/suction5.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/suction6.jpg

Ok, here is the last part of my worklog.

I decided to use captube instead of cpev...

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/captube1.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/captube2.jpg

I did not have a t-connector to install a access valve in highside so i did one myself

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/t.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/t2.jpg

evacuating...

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/evac.jpg

...charging...

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/charge.jpg

...with r402a

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/r402a.jpg

Its some time ago I've built my last singlestage so i had to make a new load tester.

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/load1.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/load2.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/load3.jpg

255 watt :)

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/load4.jpg

Insulated evap mounted on loadtester

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/mounted.jpg

the insulated unit ready to test

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/unit.jpg

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/unit2.jpg

And this is the temp under load. Roomtemp was ~ 20 - 22°C

http://www.coldbug.de/Bilder/sstage/temp.jpg

The temp is not that good. I think the evaporator is not capable of this load. Also I've to change the captube as it is to restrictive. I won't have time for this until early january :( So this is is the cooler as it is for now...

But I'll change captube and evaporator to yield better performance as soon as I've the spare time for it.

Also I could not test the unit under a lower load as I don't have a variac right now.

Pio you sure you didnt just not prefill enough oil or something?

No, I'm sure, I have already mounted some of those separators, all prefilled with same quantity of oil and all works ok except that one :( . Weird was that didn't make any hissing sound of gas comming to suction line  .

Worklog - part II

Ok I've made insulation :

http://www.members.lycos.co.uk/piotres2/ultramarine/20.jpg

I've sticked almost whole 15 meters roll armaflex sticky tape there  .

I must use some plastic tape, because normal insulation was too thick to mount case with 120 mm x 38 mm fans on back wall  .

Same reason is for thiner insulation on 2nd stage compressor's acumulator .

piotres... We have ounces to measure weight and ounces to measure volume.

Is the oil you used measured by weight or volume? Convert your mL to fluid ounces.

On sticker was 15 OZ, not fl.OZ, so I bet it's measured by weight :yepp: .

Weird... a liquid measured by weight.

My apologies.

It my be measured by weight in some part of the world, but I have my doubts about that even. Here at least, oil is measured and specified by volume, not weight. Just because it doesn't say "fl oz", doesn't mean its by weight, on my small cans of POE oil it says 8.5 OZ (.251 L); If it wasn't by volume, why would they put the metric equivalent in volume instead of weight?

Maybe thats why the oil seperator failed? hhhhhmmmm

tim-
12-11-2007, 07:48 PM
well with specific oil density 8 fl oz and 8oz is almost the same.

I just checked the castel chart for oil seps, they have spec the oil amount in weight, strange.. damn italianos :p

case for Staker Case (58cm long)
special cuts for nick of owner and water in and out

the Goal for this unit was to hold a quadcore at around -40 on evap, and to hold a dual 8800 gtx at around 20 degrees for the water.
currently the unit is at owner house.
from my test i had to sacrify a bit the evap temp, to have a good floodback for the heatexchanger cooling water, but goal is almost achieved.
having a report from customer this days...hope before xmas:D

Well I missed my deadline for this project. I am leaving on vacation to Arizona in 6hrs and I made a valiant effort. I finished all the brazing, pressure testing, vacuuming and initial charge today, but when I went to turn on the compressor for the first time, it runs for a good 10 sec., and then blows the circuit breaker. Turns out that this house my parents moved into only has 10 amp breakers. Not useful when I got a 1/2 hp compressor plus an Iwaki and a bunch of fans, never mind the actual computer that has to go in it.

So anyways, I just wanted to get it running today and submit some photos of temps, but as far as aesthetics, I havent touched it yet. I dont think I wouldv'e won but it was a goal.

Anyways, good look to the other contestants.

One of our members approached me a while back to see if I was interested in assembling a phase change system for him in a case he had fabricated completely out of aluminum; I said "sure".... then he started explaining what he wanted to do :yikes: At first I wasn't sure..... then I saw some pics of the case he had made and that won me over :yup: The thing blew me away with the looks and quality of the build.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/boshuter/lga%20660/gregs%20build/DSC00050.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/boshuter/lga%20660/gregs%20build/empty-case-2.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/boshuter/lga%20660/gregs%20build/both-cases.jpg

We agreed on the deal and it wasn't long until 2 large packages arrived at my house. One contained the case with a box inside of it containing enough parts for 2 complete phase change units (except for copper tubing and insulation), plus some extras, the
other contained 2 brand new Danfoss NF11FX compressors. :chit:

Build Specs: (everything X2;))

Danfoss NF11FX 3/8th HP Compressor
Chilly 1 Evap with Jinu braided flex line
"New Style" Chilly 1 mounts
.031 captube
Jinu's condenser
Xtreme Cooling Controller w/LCD (green lcd to match lcd in UFO pc case)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/boshuter/lga%20660/gregs%20build/gregs-parts.jpg

At first I figured this would be a simple "assemble the parts and be done" deal...... that was before I got the tape measure out and found out just how much (or how little as it turned out) room I had for this project. Both phase units had to fit inside an area measuring 16"X 17" and the small measurement was front to back where I really could use more room. You can see in the pics with the compressors and condensers sitting in the case, just how much room there is with the front and back case fans..... very little room between the compressor and condenser.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/boshuter/lga%20660/gregs%20build/P1010004.jpg

I grabbed a bunch of new 1/4" tubing and my trusty tubing benders and set out to try to fit some kind of subcooler coil in this system, after much trial and error (I have a lot of bent 1/4" tubing if anyone needs some ;)), I finally got it done. I am really pleased with the tubing; I felt with the small condensers and general limitation on build room that we really needed a subcooler coil with these units, and I really wanted it in the airflow from the condenser fans if possible. I made a cardboard template that fit in the bottom of the case and set the compressors and condensers in where they had to go and marked the mounting holes for them on the white cardboard. I could then take the cardboard out and use it on the workbench to do all the bending and tubing layout work. This was pretty nerve wracking work for me.... it had to be right the first time and there was very little margin for error..... it also had to look good and I wanted both sides to be as close as possible to each other. Anyway, here is the final tubing layout (with exception of flex lines, which will exit the rear of the accumulators).

I brazed the first unit together today and it's leak testing now, if everything is ok it will be vacuumed tomorrow and maybe an initial charge.

Brazed pics..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a5/boshuter/lga%20660/gregs%20build/brazed-3.jpg

Ok..... got the first unit all insulated today and decided to run the load tests. We had a target load of 200w max since Greg is running a dual core X6800 and plans on going to 45nm quad next; Plus the fact that with our limited space we were very marginal on condenser size.;) I was expecting app. -30c at 200 watt, at first that is about what I was getting when I initially charged the unit with r507. I had some r502 here that a friend had given me to try, I knew it had more capacity and would run lower pressure than the r507, so I decided to try it. I charged the unit to around 60psi static pressure with the r502, then started the compressor and tuned to load with propane. It turns out that mix worked very well, I got more capacity and lower temps than with either gas by itself. :D Anyway...... here are the load test results... enjoy:thumbs:

Temps measured at top of evap (runs around 5-6v colder than with probe in base), unit was run at least 30min at each load except for 235 watt, it ran it for at least an hour.

ambient 22c
idle -53.8c
100w -45.6c
150w -42.5c
200w -39.4c
235w -35.4c (never expected it to run this much load, that is max this load tester would do)

Finished load tests on second unit and both are (re)insulated. I'm not going to go into a detailed account of the second unit load test, it ran 1-2 degrees of temps of the first unit.

After all testing was complete, I started the job of mounting all this inside the case..... it was a real challenge to get it all in there and still not look like a big mess. I'm fairly happy with the way it turned out, the wiring maybe could have been a little neater, but it's not a total mess. ;)

I had to do some modding on the Chilly1 mounts (I still like the old style better :yup:), and some fabrication to be able to mount the controller boards on top of the condensers. In this case, that was about the only good location for them, but I wish they came with longer lcd cables so they could be mounted anywhere. I can't comment on the performance of the controllers, I wasn't able to run them hooked up to a pc. I'm waiting to hear from Greg about how they do.

Anyway........ IT'S DONE :thumbs: Let me know what you think of it :)

These 2 pics show how crammed in everything was inside the case when it was all finished.....

WOW! fantastic. what a tight fit. any floodback at idle? what are the pressures at load?

Thanks TT :)

No floodback at idle, the small accumulators do a good job of preventing that.

Unit is tuned to be at 1-2psi suction at around 175w, it will not drop to vaccum until less than 100w, and goes to around 5-6psi at 235w. Discharge never got above 230psi on long 235w test. After an hour test at 235w the compressor shell temp got to about 67c, not bad but will be worse with case under the pc case..... I think it will operate best at the target load of 200w.

Yes it is for both cpu's, he is running an X6800 dual core on one system and right now has a dual core AMD that will soon be replaced by one of the new Intel 45nm quads.... hopefully he'll do a thread with the entire setup when it's finished.

I'm driving to meet him the day after Xmas to hand deliver this unit...... no way I wanted to give this to UPS to play with ;)
