I just bought 4 gigs of DDR2 800 . How long will it take for DDR2 to be obsolete ? I need this PC to last me 3 years :P and I don't want to upgrade for a while .

I wouldn't say that it was a bad decision. DDR1 is still being used by several people, and DDR2 only became mainstream roughly a year ago when the C2D came out. IMO, buying DDR3 now is kind of silly, unless you're breaking world records.

during this 3 years .. why dun u get another 4 gigs of DDR2 800 making it 8 gigs? since u're worried of the performance?

ram dosnt go oboslite until the platform its on goes, so its still completely viable if ur an amd system to use ddr1, and with the latency involved in ddr2 and ddr3 for the most part the 1st gen of the ram isnt faster than the previous. i.e cas 2.5 400mhz ddr1 is comparable to 800mhz cas5 ddr2 for general use or 1333 cas8 ddr3, im not saying that they have the same bandwidth but latency on the ddr1 is good enough that the limitations on the rest of the system dont make the ram slow

There will be a need for DDR2 for another couple of years. If you bought 4 gigs of DDR, you would be in trouble.

Ya.. and with how cheap ddr2 is right now, you can't go wrong.

Ballistix are flaky. They seem to run hot, fast, and burn out equally fast. :p: Not to discourage you or anything, but the reports are very mixed on their production quality.
I've had a set of Ballistix Tracers I've been using for a few months with no problems; had to RMA the first set as they died.
But as for DDR2, you'll be set for 2 years I'd say if you keep to the older platforms. In 24 months time DDR3 will have become mainstream for all the new OEM system builds, and pretty much every enthusiast/OC'er out there.

What's the worst that can happen burn up? :stick: 4 gigs of ram will be barely enough to fit game needs in 2 years.

8 gigs is starting to become the norm for some users..

Actually I think that's a smart move. I don't think ram will ever be this cheap for a long time, especially once ddr3 actually kicks in (most likely with nehalem possibly am3, but most likely nehalem), especially with the industry being in the state it is. I say enjoy your ddr2 and make the best use of it you can with a 64 bit os and have some fun with what you have until your stuff is obsolete as mine (6600gt for the win! )

enough, but in 2 years perhaps his CPU is to slow, so he needs a better one, but perhaps cpus then only able to run on DDR 3 boards:( (I just guess^^)
but I think it wasnt a bad decision , RAM is cheap and 4gig are easily used with win Vista and some tasks + Crysis /something like this... so dont worry
but hey , whats about Overclocking ? how does your modules work?

8 gigs is starting to become the norm for some users..For who? Most people still use two GB. Most people still run a 32-bit platform that doesn't support even four GB.
Eight GB only became the norm for servers a few years ago.
