Biz.Gamedaily is reporting on the newly released console sales numbers for October in the US. As reported on by The NPD Group, total video game sales (hardware and software) came in at $1.1 billion for October, a whopping 73 percent increase from the same period a year ago. Nintendo regained its hardware sales lead after being beaten by Microsoft's Xbox 360 in September. In October the Wii racked up 519,000 unit sales, followed by the DS with 458,000 unit sales. Microsoft's Xbox 360 console sold 366,000 units in October, followed by sales of Sony's PSP console with 286,000 units and the PS2 with 184,000 units. The PS3 still lagged behind in October with sales of just 121,000 units; that will likely change in November due to the price cut on the 80GB model and the introduction of the $399 40GB model.
In software sales, Microsoft's Xbox 360 shooter Halo 3 was number 1 for a second straight month with sales of 433,800 units; it's still a far cry from its September sales of over 3 million. Activision's Guitar Hero III took numbers 2, 3, and 4 on the top 10; the Xbox 360 version was number two with 383,200 copies sold, followed by the Wii version with 286,300 copies and the PS2 version coming in fourth with 271,100 copies. In addition the stand alone (without guitar) PS2 version of the game came in eighth with 231,700 copies (the PS3 version failed to crack the top 10). Nintendo's DS game The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass came in fifth with 262,800 copies sold followed in sixth place by the continued sales success of the Wii title WiiPlay (with WiiRemote) with sales of 239,700 copies. The Xbox 360 version of Valve and EA's Half-Life 2: The Orange Box was seventh with sales of 238,400. The PS2 version of EA's FIFA Soccer 08 game came in ninth with 129,700 copies. Finally the DS game Brain Age 2 was 10th with sales of 116,900 units.
