NVIDIA Claims AMD Cannot Play HD Content; AMD Rebuttal Shows Otherwise
At NVIDIA's recent Editors Day, NVIDIA tried pretty hard to show just how awesome they think the 8800GT is. To do this, they took two computers, put an 8800GT in one, a 2900XT on the other, paired both to a 30" HP monitor that runs at a native 2560x1600 resolution, and tried to get both to play an HD-DVD. The 2900XT, according to NVIDIA, could not play any HD content, and was limited to 1920x1200. The incriminating slide is below. However, AMD was very prompt in their rebuttal. While the 2900XT cannot display HD content in a resolution higher than 1920x1200, neither can any of the G80 cards. The 8800GTX and Ultra, which are more powerful than the 8800GT and much more expensive, are limited to single-key HDCP, limiting the resolution and playback just like the 2900XT. AMD then put an HD-DVD in the drive of a test system with an HD 3850, plugged it into a monitor capable of displaying a 2560x1600 resolution, and watched the movie in full screen with full hardware acceleration. In short, both AMD and NVIDIA discovered that their next-generation graphics cards are superior to each others' last-generation graphics cards.

So they are both holding a pissing contest over a format nobody gonna use the next good bid of years?

2900Xt does not have UVD
8800GT does not provide good VC-1 acceleration.
If you want good and cheap card for HTPC get a HD 2600

Care to specify what format you are talking about?

I think they were only demonstrating their ability to scale a 1080p video to the resolution of a 30" screen.
Yes, it is true ... becasue AMD have a new HD38x0 cards ...

personally, i think that slide is a complete waste of time and effort...
its become quite petty the battle of the cards

QFT!!!
1080P (1920x1080) is the highest format available for the masses right now.
2560X1600 comes only on 30" PC monitors,at that size you can't see the diffrences between the two of them(1080P/2560x1600),to enjoy the full glory of 1080P you need to have a 37"-40"+ diagonal.

did nv even get theirs to play that high at a good image quality, and how can they do that rez without vc-1, h264 looks like ass when upmixed and without vc-1 i dont see how they can claim that rez natively
and ati has theater mode witch will upmix any content to max rez in full screen including 2560x1600 and 2560x2048

Can someone tell me why 25*16 is important when Full HD is 1080p?

More pixels, less visable aliasing and better pixel pitch.
Friend has a 40" 1920x180 Sony 10-bit LCD TV as his display... the amount of detail is quite simply amazing I must say... thought it would be a bit grainy due to screen size but absolutely none at all. Beautiful.
X2900XT 1GB powering it of course. He's a big AMD/ATi guy ;)

While the 2900XT cannot display HD content in a resolution higher than 1920x1200
It is a misleading news, because it can play HD content.

Depends alot on distance. Personally I dont see a life in the home for anything bigger than 1080p. Unless you are a super lonely geek with a wallsized TV.

I feel sorry for whoever made and believes that graph...

that graph dosnt look to be in the rite perspective its screwed to make rez look less important on smaller screens
but we are talking about a grafix card no1 uses a 30inch monitor from 20feet away and its upmixing not playing at the that rez, also why are they playing like atis solution is trash becouse it has no uvd havening independent dolby, vc-1 and h/x264 decoders is the same if not better

Its not screwed in any way. 30" and 20feet 480p would be enough
But we are down to something like 3feet for a 30". I dont know about you, but when I watch a TV episode or the like on my computer. I dont sit glued up so thight to the screen. 3 feet is about what I do when watching that.

He's about 2-3 feet away from it.... ;)
Also, higher res is always good - more desktop area!

BINGO!
Those of us who work from our computers need all the desktop area we can possibly muster. :D
