I honestly can't keep with the INtel chipsets. I'm still on a P965..then we go to P35 and then X38 and then X48.
Is it possible for them to just make the mobos that accept a drop in chipset?
Is this a possibility?
I Don't really see why not? doubt the mobo manufacturers would do this because it would cut into their profits.
Just thinking out loud because im getting sick of these fast changing Intel chipsets.

that would be great but i dont think it will ever happen besides other update to the board like pci-e 2.0

actual board upgrades are rare.... PCI-E 2.0 after like what 3 years? DDR3 after a long time as well.
Chipsets seems like they change every few months.....

You have a really interesting thought there.

However interesting the thought may be, you have to see the wider picture.
We can't keep up with Intel because we don't enjoy what we have.
The question is... do you NEED to keep up, or you WANT to keep up?
If you WANT to keep up, which is what applies in most cases, you may have to look for the solution somewhere completely else. Concentrating your efforts in improving your income for example. WANT is a very expensive word.
I personally don't see what Intel has to gain from a socketed chipset platform. And if there's no potential revenue, there's no real reason to go there. I find difficult to digest that Intel drives their market and R&D policies by e-penis sizes.

Why would any a board partner make such a board that would KILL their own sales?

I am still using a P965 and been 3 CPUs E6400, X3070 and now Q6600. There is really no point for me to upgrade to a new mobo.

Nearly imposable, Each chipset group comes with their own specs on what is necessary on a board to supply them with power and layout guidelines for peripherals and whatnot. There would be multitudes of other supporting IC's that would be needed on such a board to account for all the possible configurations of voltage regulation and logic control. Probably would need individual BIOS development for each chipset that fit in there and a large amount of space to store each of the various BIOS's.
hehe, and it would be hell to validate.

would be interesting to see done.
when I first read the title I invisioned the cpu socket being integrated with the chipset so the cpu plugged directly into the chipset like a socket instead of having it located elsewhere on the mobo. this is what happens without sleep......

Well one thought would be to capture a part of a sale that they would otherwise capture nothing.... The guy likes his 965=== so until something really out of the world comes up.. he can update his mobo to keep more current then no update.. Then when the new latest and greatest mobo of all time board comes out-- he can just get that.. Nv or Intel can then capture the updates as well as the full mobo sale...
