View Full Version : How Old Are You?

This is simple. I know I'm not the only one who is curious about the demographic spread of members on this forum. I know I've been surprised many times when an argument over a topic degenerates into "back in the day..." statements. So this is a random look, through polling, of all you oldies, as well as babies out there. Cheers!

My first computer was an Atari 400 with an 8 bit 1.? Mhz processor and 16K of RAM. Commercial programs were loaded by ROM cartridges. I eventually got a cassette deck to load my own BASIC programs in.

As cliche as it sounds because every > 15 year old with a decent system says that they didn't buy it, because I have seen my fair share, my parents did not. Infact they were totally against the idea, and thought that it seemed like waste of money.
I started off with a DFI ultra-d, Opty 165 and 1GB Of g.skill ram and a 7900GT. Very good system, all used parts bought of a forum.
Pretty good at the time, not to mention I was only 14. And no Im not going to lie, I did not pay all of it. I was fortunate enough, and they started me off with 300 dollars. The rest was gained by haying at our local farm during the summer for 9 dollars an hour.
I now have a job at a PC store in our local town called PC connections. Since I am A+ cert, (who isn't), I can make a steady 13 an hour, which is very good for my age considering I'm not even "legal" to work overtime.
Saving Birthday money and xmas money helps as well. It all just takes time.

haha the one i'm using now practically is. I've always had to buy mid-range stuff or I'd just end up waiting an extra 3-4 months. I bought a q6600 from tankguys when they got G0, sold it, and LOST the money...I have back luck with hardware, especially only making about $850 a month right now with bills. I'm getting a better job next month so I think I'll finally have a rig that'll hold me over for a while.

At the age of 5 my father brought home a 386. Everyday I messed up dos because I didn't know english at all at the beginning. I just tried all the commands which I saw in the English manual.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altair_8800
That's the stuff; we had one of those printers. :D Even had an AppleTalk port for direct serial communication at up to 9600 baud. For you young'uns, "baud" can be considered synonymus with "bits per second." :ROTF:
My birthday is tomorrow, and I'm happy to say that I'm 28 today. I don't know when my first computer was actually given to me, but I got to start playing games on it when I was two years old. The Apple II+ was my first toy, with its beutiful monochrome screen that would glow at night, even if it hadn't been used that day. Did I mention that it had a single RCA connector for its signal?
As I grew up, I got use of an 8088, 80286, 80386 25MHz w/ 80387 co-processor (my first long-term hack machine), and an IBM PS/2 (486DX33). All of those machines were eventually given to me, as my dad upgraded. Once my dad took a job at MS, in 1994 he didn't really use his machine at home... so, no pentium-class machine ever came along for me. My first build was a K6-2 333.
BTW, how many of you remember when SIMMs were introduced? My 386 had 72 DIP-sockets for individual 14-pin memory chips. Oh, and a digg through my dad's old junk uncovered a telephone coupler, not long ago! Long gone it seems, are the days of MCA and even ISA. pity...
My first ever case-mod involved nothing more than a pair of vice-grips.
LiViD
01-12-2008, 12:17 AM
Actually baud and bps were two different things. Baud is the signaling rate at which data is sent, BPS is the data rate itself. I learned that lesson the hard way by being told off by someone else many years ago. :P
zLynk
01-12-2008, 11:09 AM
Touché. Baud is a measure of symbol rate, where symbols can be multi-bit length. If you need to know more, use wikipedia.

23.
Looks like XS primary demo is ~16-25 years old (which is what I expected). However, I'll soon be exiting that category into old foagie :(
My first was a mom&pop built 800 AMD Tbird. Full speed cache for the one, lol. I ended up poking around in there, updating the BIOS for better IDE performance - such was the life of a Via chipset. Also had to screw around with PCI Latency bs...that was fun. Didn't build until I my painted 1600+ failed, along with the rest of that board haha.

Is it normal to feel significantly older when you turn 20? I sure do. Now, in true Reagan fashion, I proclaim it late afternoon in America and am off to take a long nap.

So at 42 I am in the last 8% of the population on here!

I felt the same way, two years ago. Gravity sets in that you're starting to age a bit, you think about your age, not just if you're old enough for alcy.

The other day I talked with a 89 year old women........... and I think i'm at the end of the line, as a 44 year old......but compared to her, i'm only half way through...and that's a loooooooooong trip.

I'll be 52 when I wake up tomorrow morning March 28th. It has been nothing short of fantastic my whole life. I still have my one and only child at home. He is MZ95 on Xbox live and at 12 he runs his e6600 on his P5N-e at 3800mhz for a daily clock. He set it up all by himself. We ride dirt bikes together, We are going to spend a week at our beach place crabbing and fishing next week during his spring break. My wife and I are going on 30 years of marriage this year. I got to tell you, if you play your cards right it only gets better!!!
Just don't become your own worst enemy in life!!
Cheers to all us old b-a-s-t-a-r-d-s......

PS. Both machines in my sig run Super pi 1M under 10 seconds. How much better could it be?
